GATES timing belts -yay or nay?!
Hey all, I dont seem to find a lot of info after searching around here, sooooooo..... What are everybodys thoughts about Gates timing belts for subies? Normally, Im an OE or nothin kinda guy.....but after 3 years of selling toyota parts at the stealership, and seeing all the Gates timing belts that went on the 'yotas (and the senior toyota techs that swore by them) Well........ At present time, I am fairly convinced that Gates is an adequate alternative to O.E. subaru. Feedback?

best lube for getting a coolant line onto a rusty pipe?
Ill have to second this. It sounds redneck (OK ....it IS redneck) but it works. Plus.....as long as you havent been into the "good stuff" whilst you work on your sube.....it is non-corrosive:grin:

Wind Noise
backwoodsboy replied to NewKens1's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIve had this with both my '93 Legacy, and my '03 Baja. It originates from the rubber gussets on the doors where the side mirrors attach. The cure was to replace the seals on that triangular piece. There was a TSB I believe for the newer Legacys and Bajas (I got mine changed under warranty)

Ziebart?
Ziebart (back in the day, at least) was full-body rust protection. I have a van that it was done to, and they drilled holes all in the doors and body panels to shoot rustproofing in. Its a 1982.....and the bottoms of the doors are JUST starting to rust (here in salty NY no less!) Good stuff IMHO.

Changing from dino to synthetics in higher mileage vehicles.
The only time I had a problem with this type of thing was with a domestic vehicle. It was higher mileage (for a dodge) 126,000 something for miles. We had recently acquired it, and I went right to the synthetic oil (actually HELPED the oil consumption problems) However..... unknown to me, the motor had a lot of "gunk" buildup from the previous owner, and the synth oil broke all that free. Long story short.....all that loose junk clogged my oil pump, and I was replacing the motor 2 weeks later:mad: (never had this problem with a sube though....so IDK)

Screwing the US?
backwoodsboy replied to The Dude's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI dont have any hard #s to back me up here..... but Ive ALWAYS pushed my soobs well beyond their "factory" towing/hauling limits for the US. My 4-cyl Baja keeps right up with my parents V6 dodge dakota when it comes to towing. I have NEVER had any trouble due to towing stuff, and I always kinda felt like the vehicles could handle MORE if they had to!

93 legacy wagon SCORE!!!! **finally....pics!!**
Hey all, Just scored me a fine new winter (or maybe year-round) ride. '93 legacy wagon, a/t, 250k with the 2.2:banana: Drives nice, shifts nice, and almost no rust (a few quarter sized holes in the same old spots) The guy was getting rid of it due to a fuel line leak:confused: SCORE!!!! This is admittedly the first 2.2 Ive owned (always had 1.8s or 2.5s) I know the engine is darn near bulletproof ...but anything I need to watch for? Thanks guys and gals! :D :D (end gleeful rant) :D :D : PICS !!! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/WAGON1.JPG http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/WAGON2.JPG

Grease Fittings & Universal Joints
backwoodsboy replied to hohieu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOh.......I thought we were talking about rear-DRIVE SHAFT universal joints here? The ones on the front and rear of my brat's drive shaft were replaced and have the grease fittings.

Baja Q from a newb
backwoodsboy replied to RandyLok's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMmmm......yeah. Not real pretty under the body cladding, I will have to agree. Also not that much under the thick plastic bedliner. HOWEVER..... for the weight capacity (and beyond) of these trucks, it is MORE than enough. In typical SUBARU fashion.... light but strong. Ever seen a brat? Super light chassis, and super thin sheet metal......but just try to break it. I have done some pretty serious hauling with mine, (dirt, large rocks, hay, and even loads of firewood. The liner scratches easily, but short of dropping a chevy small block into the bed from 3 feet up, you will find it very hard to do serious damage. Just my 2 cents

oh no. The first frost advisory this season.(sept 10)
Well.... we did indeed get frost here in 'ol upstate NY! It was JUST 32f, and enough to make the grass crispy. I very much enjoyed the ride to work, seeing the fall colors starting (with the heater on in my brat) Very pleasant, I LOVE fall!

Driving on Ice/Snow
In my BAJA, I have always thrown it quickly into neutral, and she will straighten right out. THEN shift down one gear, and that provides better grab to slow down, than just using brakes........in my experience anyways.

Subaru right through the very end....
Heck with that...... just bury me in one of my old GL wagons.
