  1. i didn't tell you eric? i switched professions... i'm not poor because i'm not working and a full time college student. i just suck at cutting hair! :-p
  2. i have a sami, and it out wheels the subaru before i got the second tcase for the subaru. the only time i've out wheeled a sami in the subaru was a steep hill climb at evan's creek. longer wheelbase and heavy foot. other than that a sami is a good thousand pounds less than a subaru, they float if set up properly.
  3. i don't pull the axle anymore, but i rarely drive it unless it's to and from the trail. but after driving on the pavement i do notice that i do tend to snap stub shafts in the diff a lot more often. the more pavement, the more they snap. i still haven't seen the outer hub's stub shaft go bad. my .02 if you still have the fwd option. i wouldn't pull the axle all the time, and on high traction roads leave it in fwd. i used to get lazy and not pull the axle before i had the divorced case... yes in the long run something might break. i need to start pulling an axle in my rear wheel drive subie, and hopefully i won't eat as many stub shafts.
  4. i'll see about the money situation. i wouldn't be driving the subaru anyhow. needs tires. the suzuki samurai is driving fine though.
  5. i'd be interested, if i have money. but won't have any possible expendable cash till the 5th of nov. and not much. you planning on making the trip? i heard it was supposed to be opening up this fall. but that's awesome if it's back open!
  6. looks awesome! that's some good restoration work there!
  7. i'm not saying it won't make it. you'll just have to beef everything up, long travel isn't a requirement, but super strong suspension and high enough to clear the rocks, whoops and sand bars. it's similar to rally, but a lot rockier, offcamber ground and really sandy in spots. you'll also need multiple good pit crews. last time i was at the baja 250 race, you did see baja bugs. just lift it, reenforce it and give it a go. but it ain't cheap to run it.
  8. yes, but there are time limits for every class
  9. and to build off the what the last post says, toyotas are put together here in the states. i had the opertunity to get a job where they assemble them in california. i'm sure they assemble them in other parts of the country also. and yes the v6 engines that they built while they were using the 2.7L 4cyl, did suck. the 4cyl had more power and pep.
  10. worked great here. one of these years i'll get the truck going....
  11. bone stock front vw suspension is a lot stronger than your mcpherson strut setup on a soob. and the majority of the 1200 and 1600 class cars take 30 or more hours to complete the race. no sleep inbetween for them. one of my buddies uncles races the 1600 class buggies. last year it took them around 31 hours to finish, and was the first time they were able to finish without some mechanical failure. and can we say chiropractor bill... good thing he's a doctor and can afford a lot of that. plus they built a class 7 truck for this year so they actually have suspension. there's not a class for subaru's there is for vw's though. which means you'd have to do what that other subaru buggy did, enter in the unlimited class. i'm sure you could build a class 10 buggy and use a subaru engine though. cause that's unlimited suspension, normal aspiration 4cyl engine.
  12. haven't tried it, but the front suspension of my nissan 720 pickup is 10 times better in whoops than my subaru. not the best but a lot better.
  13. start looking at the real offroad buggy suspensions, converting to an a-arm long travel setup. or just put limiting straps on some new subaru struts. and reenforce the stock ctl arms at least with a 1/4" plate. after i did that to mine, i've never tweaked another ctl arm on a rock.
  14. good luck getting one of those japanese models, to find out.
  15. so lets see here, i looked into the custom pinions a few years ago... and your talking about a mere 22:1 or 23:1 instead of 20:1 (which isn't even enough to compensate for the tires...) and shelling out 10k for developement. or less than a grand and add another tcase. turbone and i have about 60:1 crawl... hmm.... lets see here. lot of money or headache for nothing, or actually get something... not to mention you can use an lsd up front like mine has with a divorced case...
  16. your better off just going with a divorced case option and get a set of ea71 4.11 rear diffs. much easier, cheaper and works. did i mention i have a car with that setup for sale within the next month or two... or as soon as i get a set of matching 30 or 31 m/t tires.
  17. x2 which is what the debate about adding tcases came to a couple years ago... but if i put chevy or ford in my yota, they still consider it toyota till everything is missing... but not here...
  18. would like to see pics of the subaru racing, and vids, post 'em up!
  19. it'll boil down to where you want to go. fullsize vs. midsize... midsize will fit a lot more places.
  20. what class are they entering you in? do you have to have all the fresh air pumps and stuff also? well lets see how the roo does, watch the front struts, if they aren't strapped they'll seperate on some of that terrain at high speeds. or not, cause you don't have large tires...
