which is why i'm building a toyota on 39's i like the really big rocks, that dwarf me. very expensive though. it depends on the difficulty your trying to get into also. i already have about 4k into it and i still can't go wheel it. just to get it to where i want for a bare minimum trail rig, it's gonna take a lot more hours and 3k to 5k more in mods. so always consider that into what your building. yes you can slowly add on as you go, or in my case tear down and build what you really want whether ea81, sami or toyota.

driven and wheeled both, they both have their pros and cons. ask your self are you planning on driving it on the street or only to and from the trail. do you want a comfortable ride on washboard logging roads? just remember just my 2 cents. subaru wagon pros: longer wheelbase by over a foot. better for short ubrupt or steep climbs. independent suspension which will absorb more washed up roads at higher speeds. a lot more get up and go power can easily do a lot of custom mods great entry vehicle to get into wheeling really easy to work on subaru cons: gearing straight sucks, unless heavily modified. your dealing with car parts everything is custom, if your lazy and don't want to a lot of fab work, not the vehicle for you. unless you buy one modified. independent suspension in the big rocks doesn't work as well as a solid axle. Samurai Pros: solid axle, excellent platform to start building for difficult trails great gearing with stock tires, needs to be changed when you go to bigger tires though. large aftermarket support (gets spendy fast for a budget wheeler) reason my toyota isn't built all the way yet Samurai cons: doesn't drive down the road that great (mine has 2 steering stabalizers and i still get bump steer on the street...) extremely stiff ride! in stock form. plywood board driving down the street. catchs wind like a brake and pushes you all over, even at stock height. really short wheelbase on steep climbs. almost saw eric go over trying to make it up a hill that i had made. a lot of people stretch the wheelbases out a good foot or 2 for good reaon. engine is quite weak. either way you go, parts will break and need upgrading. common samurai swaps are toyota axles. subaru's, rear solid axles to beat breaking a car's rear end after heavy gearing modification. something else to look at, is can you get replacement parts easy? do junkyards in your area carry that vehicle. arizona sucked for subaru parts and samurai. got back to washington, was able to fix everything for 100 bucks, versus the 700 it was going to cost me without being able to use junkyards. i do have a couple toyota housings axles and brake setups lying around. just need third members and cleaning up...

yeah, it's not like you live far away!

brian has the right idea. if you want to try, just leave a note. i wouldn't suggest going and talking to some crazy for no reason. just my 2 cents.

so who's all going? i'm torn, if i get the timing belt redone on the sami this weekend i might show. but i also might have a welcome home wheeling, riding and camping at tahuya that weekend. one of my buddies is getting out of the corp and moving back to the puyallup area. weather dependant.

nah, just doing a structual integrity test... and making sure the 4wd works. need to get the money to finish the toyota... so i don't wheel the sami. an innocent drive up logging roads, with 4x4 trails all around, doesn't work with me i just want to play. i remember that hill! fun times, i need to get a wheeler going, haven't been to evans in at least 4 years...
-
what time are you headed up there?
-
so who is for sure going? i'm still on the fence, have a family get together on saturday. was just out to naches today. conditions are great and easy.
-
well took an innocent drive up to the naches ranger district in my new daily driver. just to drive up to raven's roost and also check out the the trailheads near milk lake and the goofy rocks... so i went down some of the upper powerline trail and all the way to the rocks... had a blast! love the sami. saw the trails... and anyone that knows me... i couldn't resist! did i mention bone stock... with street tires... unless these trails are wet they'll be even more of a cake walk with the toyota, exept the rocks, didn't try them in the samurai... not to mention the toyota is wider, so a little more caution will be needed to avoid trees on 687, 686 was pretty clear and open.
-
if your looking for an offroader, make sure there is aftermarket support. otherwise stay with subaru, you'll be customizing anyways.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/wenatchee/conditions/orders/index.shtml here's the closers for the wenatchee nat. forest. check and see if those roads to access camp are on it. fire was started by lightening. those campgrounds you were planning to stay at, aren't on the list. and i didn't see anything about no motorized vehicles.
-
you should try evan's creek. a little ways for ya, but i know i could probably come out for the evening. it'd also probably be easier to get turbone to come out.
-
if they are having a fire... more than likely the manashtash district will be closed. happened to me the last time i planned a trip out to naches.
-
that's not cheating. it's called upgrading. all wheeler's upgrade, if you don't, your left behind through the progression.

POSTING FOR SUBAFLY

how about i make it easier. manashtash camp ground or rider's campground. both in manashtash, same area. either camps are probably best for you. unless you want to go to the otherside and camp on the naches river side. here's your info on rider's camp http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/wenatchee/cle-elum-orv/riders-campground.html manashtash camp info is down. some web site maintenanence. it's just before rider's on the same road. i'm still tenative. if i have my sami, i might bring that, but not much for the wheeling dept if i bring that. or if i get the tires on the car i'll definately bring that.

wait out for a solid axle, whether sami or toyota. how heavy are you planing on modifying the vehicle? if your planning steep ascents and heavy rocks you'll want to stretch a sami's wheel base to over 100". or that seems to be the normal for heavy modded sami's. some aftermarket sites to look into, and a little light reading... www.sky-manufacturing.com www.trail-gear.com www.allprooffroad.com www.marlincrawler.com www.calmini.com suzuki faq http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113614 toyota faq http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=459180

research, research and more research your local laws before you get a fat ticket. that doesn't look like it's legal in most states. might want to make your main cage support more vertical or do a hell of a lot of triangulated bracing.

Hatch Patrol? Reiters run- Friday eve/Sat morning Aug 24/25
Rooinater replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Off Road
fyi, not that i'm extremely concerned. but night wheeling on any blm land is technically illegal. reiter is blm. and the fire regulations are on nw-wheelers somewhere. has to be in a burn barrel raised off the ground. looks like it was fun though.
