mine did. i couldn't put my finger on the problem. sounded like a crunch or pop. at one point it sounded like a bad cv. lift up the front end. put one hand on the top the other on the bottom. shake opisite of steering direction. if there''s movement it's bad. (i'm sure you knew that but others might not)

Well i've been looking at converting to a larger amp for awhile. was gonna go to an XT6 alt a year or so ago... but still not enough amps for me. then into the older GM or the Newer GM alternator. but having trouble finding all the proper gm diagrams to match wires and resistors. but since i don't trust any of my charging system as it sits. i don't want to just patch in a new alt. beings the fact the volts are always low and jumpy. mainly do to a bad voltage regulator. i've decided on doing the one wire 100amp gm style alternator conversion. one wire from power to the alt. then grounds on the engine. less stuff to screw up and make it a lot simpler. guess i'll start this hopefully next month. if i can get the cash. the actual mount mods i think will be the hardest to do. bot no sweat. then i'll do an update and keep you informed on the upgrade. wether it flops or goes good! any suggestions? or design help of people that have done a gm alt conversion is greatly appreciated.

Summer camping/wheelin' schedule? (WA)
Rooinater replied to Mike W's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
how can you have cabin fever? its 65 to 75 everyday. and never a cloud in sight. perfect for camping and 4wheeling. oh, maybe that's only in the desert. but still it has to be extremely good mud up there! i'd kill for mud right now!! 3 and a half years left till the end of my 5 year active, and can go home. 5 1/2 till my inactive service is up! -
well got off my butt. not to mention had the day off. started putting back together the center consoul ane the steering column plastic. went to go work on the ignition problem. it won't make up it's mind what it wants to do. now the switch is working again... but started blowing fuses... found out why and remove the jumper used for when the switch opened up. fixed up my wiring for the cooling fans. so the toggle switch now has on, off and automatic cooling fans. but the thermistor for the auto died again... it started working today then died again... so that needs replaced. i might just go aftermarket. i found one you put in the hose area. and you can adjust what temp the fans turn on from inside the cab! but 30 dollars i don't have. oh and some reason the stereo from time to time cust out all sound. you turn it off then back on and it works again... doesn't make sense. gotta see if any of the wires are groundeing out on the speaker wires. this weekend i'm going to swap diffs so i can drive again. only rear wheel drive for awhile. beings the fact i broke the other stub axle in the rear diff and grenaded the outer cup of the front cv shaft. half the cup is missing. so it's no wheel drive right now till this weekend. as soon as i get the tool to fix the stubs. i'll put it all back together. and go get some pics in the rocks and post them on my site. have to get the leaking tire fixed too... oh well. gotta start taking it easy. till i get the bugs out. gonna try to get Warn to make me chromemolly stub axles. don't give me the lecture of something else might break. cause i know it might. and might not break near as often though!

Just to let everyone know. if you come and play on this day. finish this trail or any others that we play on that day. you are eligable for WCS membership. and have your car featured on the members rides page. preferably modified rigs. but will consider others for membership. I'm also gonna be trying to invite a few non subaru owners with there rigs. For the lake isabel trail itself. i'm requiring. (granted you can bring any vehicle to play with us in retier after the lake isabel trail run) Subaru Requirments For Lake Isabel Trail Only: 3" lift welded rear diff 26" tires minimum!! must be mud terrain tires!! good humor about possible body damage! necessity! As for on the trail. We are going to try to complete this trail. so anyone that does not want to precede with there vehicles at any time. due to possible breakage, fear, or don't think your vehicle can make it. you can turn around or pull over and park. (as long as you can find away to park and not block the trail!) then walk or take an open seat if available. if you have an extremely hard time getting to the log bridge. i strongly suggest you park and walk or ride. cause the difficulty multiplys 10 fold after the riqoute log bridge!!! with only 2 major obstacles left after the bridge! these requiements are only for the lake isabel portion of the day. not the rest of reiter pit. this is one of if not the hardest trail in reiter pit area.

Zapar- my dad's coming more than likely too. so i'll see if he's working or not. He wanted to go last time and couldn't cause my car wasn't there. he can't take the blazer cause of a cracked frame and bent axle tube. hopefully i'll have my roll bar in by then. i'm gonna be taking it easy on the 4xing here so i make it home. also see if brian and his yota can come. i want to see his rig on that trail. i'm going to try to get eric morton's yota to come up there again too. Just to let everyone know. if you come and play on this day. finish this trail or any others that we play on that day. you are eligable for WCS membership. and have your car featured on the members rides page. preferably modified rigs. but will consider others for membership. Dealer Price On Half Shafts Ea81(UPDATE)
Rooinater replied to cole098's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
haven't taken it off the car yet to actually try. but it wasn't the upper cup that blew to kingdom come. it was the side with the spindle on it. literally half of it is missing. i think i'll just tell them i was cruising down the road and boom. leave out the 4 wheeling part and hide my car so that they don't see it. cause if i remember correctly the warranty is not for abuse. but i would never abuse a vehicle... not me anyways... -
Don't Move. Please Sticky last one for awhile anyways. seperate me from wheeling you are crazy!! just the last one till i get back from deployment. well i'm tenatively coming home to washington for a few days. before i deploy. tentatively somewhere in the first couple weeks of May. so i'm gonna organize a small run up to reiter pit area. Lake Isabele Trail is the main focus and goal. Reiter Pit is located just outside goldbar on hwy 2. on the way to stevens pass. just north of seattle, east of everett and south of mount vernon. All types of vehicles are invited. But be aware lake isabele is not an easy trail. it's a very difficult trail. it starts just after crossing the power lines. take a whoop-d-doo road to the May Creek crossing. which is the actual start of the trail. there are 2 creek crossings here, an easy and a hard route. after this it slowly winds up the side of the hill. for awhile it's fairly mellow. then there's your first real obstacle. a rockface directly after another creek crossing. then there's a tight little over and around some rocks. then to a large hill with several rock faces. after the hill more rocks start to appear all through out the trail. this is when the trail increases in difficult a lot more. after a little ways past the top of the hill there's a riqoute old log bridge. it must be navigated carefully so not to fall in the cracks or go off. after this bridge the rocks get even larger. this is the farthest i've been. there's supposed to be a waterfall and a obstacle called avalanche. which from what i remeber walking was a lot of large boulders strewn across the trail. the trail is aproximately 3.9 miles long. what you go up you will be coming down type of a trail. it deadends and you must turn around. and experience the obstacles in reverse. for a map of this trail either go look at my site under trails/GPS another map is right here. Lake isabel trail map some of the obstacle difficulties are definately off. but close enough. so come and join me and the subaru's after that trail run. depending on how many turn around and how many press on. and actual time span it takes to run the trail. maybe just go play on the other trails in the reiter trails area. there are plenty of mild and medium difficult trails that can be run. so if can't take the stress and abuse of driving lake isabele. you can come meet us and play around reiter while we go up in the hills. i won't offer seats this time cause my car will be loaded. so if you want to ride you must arrange transport. hope to see you all there. this is also be duplicated on the show your 4x4 forum. http://www.showyour4x4.com All who want to meet me or see my car. come on up and play.

Dealer Price On Half Shafts Ea81(UPDATE)
Rooinater replied to cole098's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i use autozone now. i've tried cvaxles.com. good axles for everyone but me. i guess i got the 3 f'ed up ones. a couple weren't sealed properly so they leaked grease. and the other one just went. but autozone won't take back the axles i have right now for my lifetime warranty. something about i grenaded half of the lower cup away. oops... normally they take them back no problem. but i abused them horribly. -
shouldn't be breaking them. if you are there's something wrong.i had a welded diff in the rear of mine for 2 years. the exact same diff. i never had a problem till i get crazy with the throttle with 31's and compound gearing. trust me i was abusive on mine. the only way i see it a problem is that slick rock is supposed to give ultimate traction. which will break stuff if you aren't careful. just don't be throttling hard in corners.
-
sounds like a chain saw with a loose chain... couldn't tell it was a subaru till the rpm's went up. what's all the ticking. never heard a valve that load.
-
start dropping business cards on all the subaru's windows. that's what i'm about to start doing! but as for getting the boat trip over... i'm slotted to come home on the 16th of december. so next spring i guess. when does any snow disapear or does it snow in moab?? new front bumper and grillguard planned. with at least a hitch receiver or winch mount. not to mention i'm gonna try to call Warn industries up and get chrome molly stub axles made up. then see what starts breaking. won't get that till after deployment. along with hopefully an older chevy pickup and flatbed trailer. so i have a way home after i slaughter my car.

Has anyone used a tow bar on a Subaru??
Rooinater replied to clantieri's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes my dad and friends of the family use a "tow master" i believe to tow behind there motorhomes. but god awfully expensive. complained to my dad for spending more on a tow bar than the car itself. maybe i should just shut up... cause i think i just put my own foot in my mouth... -
on the lifted cars?? they are welded to the front and rear lift blocks.
-
sweet!! definately like. i was thinking of getting a new front bumper with grill guard when i get back from overseas. defanately need one now. maybe while i'm gone i can convince someone to drive it down to you... i'll have to send some sketch's. cause the one i have blocks too much air to the radiator and i need a winch mount too... all i can say is that's awesome! are you putting it on your projects gallery?
-
yeah it takes a lot to wheel with that 1600. but for the most part i could still keep up. just had to high tail it up the steep hill climbs and bounce off the rocks!! hint the name high speed rock crawling. my dad started calling it after he rode with me at the EC camp out. 4 and 6 in. lifts is all i'd recommend. unless you are doing the divorced tcase and planning on going on extreme trails with me. otherwise 8" is fine but not suggesting more. 8" is plenty... anymore i'll roll again. not to mention the offset on my tires stick out 4" to help not rolling. if i had solid axles i could go taller and larger tires... but that would be even spendier for you. changing out the rear end would definately be a must though... if you plan on trying to build your lift i guess the gen 1 would be a good canidate. no one makes a bolt up for it... look at the pics of my car with the swampers on it. that was a 4/3" lift and 27" swampers. with a 1600 motor

yes and no. the auto hobby shop here on base has one. it's 30 dollars a month to store a car and 5 dollars an hour to use the welder. if jason is working i can get a lot lower price. he likes my car. and i frequent there so often it's not even funny...
-
http://www.ozified.com these are patrick or pk davis lifts good quality and zinc plated. i can try to aid in building you one.
-
i'd suggest going pk personally. i know it costs money... but then you needn't mess with the camber angle issues on the the strut lift blocks. but there's a way around that too. actually you don't need to extend brakelines for a 4 inch lift.
-
if you are wheeling in az. i strongly suggest against the 31's without a dual tcase. cause you'll fry your clutch and break lots of suspension parts in the dunes. even with 27's in the dunes i broke the suspension from time to time. and 31's in a rock infested area is not cool!! unless you like to fly across rocks and break lots of stuff. 27 and 28's are almost too big for the gearing. been there done that, aint doing it again

mud pits? arizona? wow i want to know where. maybe cause i'm in the god forsaken desert i see no mud. rocks are bountiful around arizona, don't forget those. those are the funnest things to play on in az. if you really want to stand out get a hatch and lift it. you'll get noticed more. a little truck gets passed as another truck while a hatch or wagon is more of a wow!!! but as for lifting it that high you have to brace all of it!!
