Rooinater replied to mtsfabman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i can't tell you when i'll be home especially on the board... but i can tell you it's too soon in the aspect of a load of money... but i'll be able to pay cash for all the expensive stuff. and i can tell you this much. i've been talking to john via email... planning and waiting!!! if Lil' Roo turns out the way i'm planning... you won't be dissapointed... can you say the ultimate roo.... i should be in Eugene for a few hours or a day around christmas time... need to put the finishing touches on design and drop some parts off at john's house. i'm supposed to be driving down from washington... i'm planning on buying a truck and car trailer to tow around my offroad projects. and i'll be driving it home from washington. -

Where to buy Swampers?
Rooinater replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
$600 with rims!! that's definately a steal!! i'd buy'em from ken if i needed them that small but if his selli bought my last ones through 4wheelparts.com . there's one in tacoma. they have a no questions asked exchange policy for tire damage too. but go for ken's first!! -

if you are planning a project like that... i'd definately say go for the bigger diffs. as aperson who has grenaded the spiders and stub axles... i don't suggest low gearing and that diff in the rear end. i haven't blown anything up in the front end yet. but you don't need as stong a diff in the front anyways. the only thing i've busted on the front with mine. is i grenaded the outer cv on the front axle... but i was being stupid at the time. so otherwise it wouldn't have broke. the back just needs to be a lot stronger! after the finishing touches are done to lil' roo... she'll probably be sold. that's if my new project goes as well as planned...... -

i don't know about stock suspension on 15's with mud terrains... but 14's you could use the cooper discoverer stt tires. or you could check my site. i did an article for scooby tires and pug rim combinations. it should be the same for the yotas. i'll be expanding the article more when i get home to the states. www.westcoaststompers.com go to subaru mods, then the tire article. Jared -
actually it should be a 4" in the front and a 3" in the rear. or at least that's how mine was built and i'm sure they are still built that way. tighten your back torsion bars to raise the rear end. you can renotch it higher too. that will take some explanation. it's not too hard though. i'm figuring you are talking about hte 4/3 kit for an ea81...

Southwest meet, anyone?
Rooinater replied to SubaSkeet's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
i understand the distance to civilization! it's 2 and a half to 3 hours to any decent sized town... san bernadino, northern AZ and utah sounds good! early spring would probably be best. if it's more than a 300 mile radius from yuma i have to put in special requests... and for moab i'll have to request leave... man how i can't wait to be a civilian. but i hope to go wheeling with you guys. i have all the parts but the steel to finish my lil' roo project for now. then i start #2....... hehehehe..... -
i'm going to have to re update that article again. when i get home. those are all based on pug rims. i'm going to have to add another article for redrilled and chevy rims. super swamper sx make 29" tires too now. and a few others.

what do you mean you can't make any of those trails.... trails in those areas are from forest service style roads to most difficult. they aren't all hard. the difficulty of the trails i go on depends on how set up the other vehicles i'm going with are. but there are easy trails in all of those places that a close to stock or mildly lifted soob would have little to no problem making. even in moab there's trails you can make! trust me i wheeled around a stocker for a few months. then for a year or 2 on a 4/3" pk lift. with 26" and 27" tires. i know where you can and can't go. but there's plenty of non hardcore wheeling to be had in those areas. let me know if you are interested at all. and in january i'll hustle to get my car finished and we can go out wheeling. how far into nevada do you live?? i live in yuma... but i'm currently in iraq... lil' roo should be up for some 4xing in early january. and i am planning on getting a run together with sweet82 up at moab sometime this coming spring. let me know. i know some places in southern cali... and some trails in northern az. i've never been there but i got gps coordinates and maps. none for nevada though. big bear area in cali has got some trails, same with flagstaff, AZ area. i got the books back home in yuma. and i got some trail info for moab too. we could hold a west coast stomper meet... check my website... i've got to put the new rear axle and suspension into lil' roo. i figure with luck it'll be done. by january sometime. hopefully... let me know if you want to. i won't be even back in the states till before christmas. Tire size question (4 the idiot me)
Rooinater replied to Taggs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
calm down GD... where would you be if someone didn't answer that question back in the day... a 27" tire... no lift??? i'd seriously suggest a lift!! fitting my 27" superswampers was a surgery just with a 4/3 inch lift. not as bad in the front with the 4/3" lift... so if you are going for no lift.... i'm gonna strongly suggest a smaller tire!! check out the cooper discoverer stt tires. they are 14 inch rims but they are like a 25.5 or 26 inch tall tire! a little easier fit. with just shy of 26" tires on my old lift i didn't have to cut much in the rear. but had to in the front. with 27's and a lift i had to cut a few inches away in the rear! now for an unlifted... it'll be a lot more cutting... but if you want to know about some offroad tires that fit on pugs... i'd suggest clicking on the picture on my signature. it'll take you to my webpage. got to the tech or mods section. there's an article about the tires fitting pugs. if the link don't work... www.westcoaststompers.com all i'm going to say is you need a lift!! the lift is cheaper than the tires!! tire size calculator... subaru brat has some conversion calculators... check that out. http://www.subarubrat.com/Calc.htm it'll look cleaner on a lift and require less trimming to facilitate suspension movement and tire size. i suggest a lift!! -
uh oh... am i missing something... the brat's getting bobbed???

C'mon Amanda or Ken! Let's see those pics!
Rooinater replied to ezapar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
envy sinks in deep.... :slober: sweet!! really like how it's looking! are those death blocks on the rear axles definately nice to have that t'case!! it saves a lot of headach out in the rock beds of arizona and saves the clutch too!! hmmm.... can't wait till i get back and start up on little roo again... need more flex pictures!! your car is now the background of this gov't computer! i'll slowly brainwash the corp into offroad subaru's... -
if i remember correctly. a small part of my column was cut. then a double joint and the lower rod had some other part to it. if you are just using standard steering. (which i don't recommend for hardcore trails) trust me. you guys can argue the tire feel thing all you want. but when you are on boulders not moving and no power steering... good luck... pwr steering is the only way to go if you are going to be doing any hard 4wheeling. but anyways, back to what i was saying. extend the bottom and use a double joint. mine has 2 joints and a rod in the center for the 8 inch lift. pk ond oz are the exact same brand lifts. but what they do is lengthen the shaft out of the steering rack. but you'll probably have to cut a little for better angle. any good trails in washington....
Rooinater replied to PeterD's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
pilchuck is pretty fun. especially during the wintertime when the snow is deep. there is plenty of places in washington to go wheel. depending on how hard you want to go or how far you want to travel. there's dirt roads and a gravel pit up at walker valley. which is by mt. vernon. there's also some pretty hard trails up there if you build the suby up later down the road. reiter pit. which is out past gold bar. along with the sultan basin area. which is just before reiter pit. reiter has a ton of places to wheel. from logging road, beat up logging roads to hardcore trails. tons of open areas to play under the power lines. and a ton of dirt roads. i'd definately suggest going out there! always bring a buddy if possible. you can also take the reiter rd all the way out to index along the river. that's a nice and scenic drive. all along reiter rd there are dirt roads and trails to explore. enjoyment is a hop and skip away. then you have manashtash area out by lake cle elum off of I90. just over the pass aways. which ties into naches area, and rim rock lake area. which all have hundreds and hundreds of miles of dirt roads and 4x4 trails. Evan's Creek is the hot bed for the HP in washington. that always seems to be where we meet up. there's a lot of fun beat up dirt roads out there to go play on. and there's one or 2 easy trails that a stock suby can make it down with little to no damages. if you go out onto the peninsula there's a place by belfair called tayhua state forest. lots of little easy trails and roads to go play on out there. i know i have some trail info on my site. it's not completed. i got sent overseas before i got the chance. www.westcoaststompers.com any other q's feel free to email me or pm me. the HP's weekend outing is a real good idea. it's probably going on right now. it took about 8-9 hours for us to do my first wagon. that's 1-2 people actually working on the car at a time.

Call me Crazy!! an XT6 on Solid Axles????
Rooinater replied to mtsfabman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
good luck! this definately is a snowballing effect. but still nobody is planning on the design i'm using. can't wait to get home to get started. good luck! Jared make sure you make it a good functional offroader. -
oh god... not another one... j/k. good luck. i hope the axles are strong enough for larger tires. or are you not making a huge one? it's still got the body it's always a subie no matter what anyone says. Jared

can it be done??? should you??? What should you use??? as for can it be done... yes it can be. hell you could look at my bio and see i'm running 31's... but i've got a transfer case 8" of lift, blah, blah, blah... i would not suggest it. for several reasons, also have a few questions to ask... the first question is why do you want to. i know once upon a time i wanted to... back in my earlier days... the things you are going to have problems with is power, turning radius and offroad finese... you'll have to beat and cut the hell out of those fenders. to the point where it's worthless. trails will be scary. especially ones you can't use high speed and momentum to get over stuff... you'll have no freeway power. and a good lacking of trail power too. a burnt clutch in harder offroading is common... now for what you really should do. one go on my web page. www.westcoaststompers.com find the how to page. and there's an offroad tire article i wrote on there. specifically for subaru's. my favorite tire on subaru's with 3 and 4 inch tires. would be a 27" super swamper SSR. they are a awesome tire! and they are jsut about right. any bigger and you really are pushing your limits. just my 2 cents worth.
