gearing to 4.11 questions
Rooinater replied to greggbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well ken is right. that's mainly what you can do to get the 4.11. but you have no dual range. the only reason i have the dual range and still have 4.11 gears... is i had the whole drivetrain redone. it has 2 t-cases and a bunch of other stuff. which without lifting your car won't really work and the way i have it is probably over kill for you. -
http://www.westcoaststompers.com. i did a small write up on tires for lifted cars. mainly offroad. it's under the modifications page

can't wait to see the pics!! i held off on getting my 33's till i beefup the diffs. axles and outer stub axles, which i'm in the process of modding for beefed up axles and stubs... takes time for what's being done. which i don't have much of. can't wait to see it!! mine will be with 31" tires for another year or 2. -
it's looking awesome!! hope to 4 wheel with you soon enough! can't wait to see pictures of moab though!!!

i don't know if it will kill me wish i could. but can't go yet.

there's some decent wheeling there. last time tex and i was there. there was a knarly set of hill climbs. which were a challange going down. or you could try going up. i remember a mud pit somewhere. but can't remember how to get to it. thoughs trails go everywhere! it's a maze of beat up loggin roads. a few rock gardens. other than that. it's fun and a lot of different types and levels of moded cars car make it. last time i was out there we ran into a stock subaru with a welded diff playing with his friends in yotas and such. wish i could go. but too long of a drive to washington. could take a rain check till i'm home in may.

go onto my website there's a trails page for this trail. also a page on how i rate trails. it's a most difficult. a mildly built vehicle could make it most the way. there's a lot of mild spots with wild spots between. a traction device is pretty much a must. limited slip or better. limited slip is not reccomended. but could make it. the better built vehicle you have and better driving skills you have, will make it easier on us and slow us down less. we are completing this trail if i have to comelong the last few feet i don't care. we are finishing it. but for the rest after this trail will only be mild trails and playing in the mud.

Going up to 11 inches lift and taking the T case plunge
Rooinater replied to subarubrat's topic in Off Road
good luck with the stub axles! all i have is a beefed up ea81 and have broken 2 in the last month and a 1/2. i was originally going to go 33" tall tires. but with 31's and the compound gearing of the second tcase. boom! i don't like that sound or the repair. but it's worth it. after i get the chromolly steel axles made. i'll go to 33" tall tires. right now i'm going with the 31" wrangler mt/r's. 33" tires after i get beefed up stub axles. i've also grenaded one of the outer cv's on the front end, so the side with the spindle half the cup is missing. there's a lot of compund torque on those stubs. be careful.. along with that using that wide of a tire is going to help towards breaking those stub axles. 8" seems plenty sufficient. i've already almost rolled my car a few times. and i have 4 inches of tire sticking out of the fenders. which helps for trying to keep it from rolling over. your just trying to compete with the rest of us, huh? gotta have the biggest? you heard mike is going to be going 10 so you went 11, and heard 12 was too much. 8" was perfect and anything over 10 is crazy. and unpractical in my opinion, not that it matters. -
with a 4 inch lift. you'll need to modify your shift linkage. cause if you are using the 4inch lift it will interfere with the 4wd linkage and getting into reverse. what we did to mine, if iremember correctly was to the little loop thingy at the bottom of the shift rod. and position it so it'd be out of the way. and welded it back in.

samurai t-case instead of nissan?
Rooinater replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
chromealloy axle stubs i'm sure would be plenty. my dad has them front and rear on his truck with over an 80:1 crawl ratio. and a 350 v8, and never has had a problem . but i'm sure you could have more material shoved in there too. that wouldn't hurt. except you make the bolt longer and possible to break, but it might not... hmm... as for the reason why i said you'd lose ground clearance. is cause if you are using a zuk tcase it'd be more practical to get the extra height out of the tcase then deminish it. also it's offset enough it should hang down lower than the nissan. andn all the extra shift linkage. he's trying to keep it simple. one thing i'd reccomend is to stuff the case in the body. -
Pictures of me and Bugaru stuck....

wish i had mud like that around here . the home page says you were challenging bugaru... i got a challenge for you come up to washington and play with me in may! i'll have my new tires on by then. -
also constantly check your bolts. especially before your first big wheeling trip!! trust me. http://usmb.net/gallery/Little-Roo-and-The-HP/Pict0066 pics of little roo the first weekend after the first lift kit. http://www.angelfire.com/80s/rooinater/images/Pict0074.JPG

samurai t-case instead of nissan?
Rooinater replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
don't turn the tcase, you'll lose all the ground clearance. as for hummer running gear... there's a lot and i mean a lot involved in what you are thinking of doing. not to mention if you can get ahold of all that running gear. not likely from any normal pull a part. you could get military surplus hummers for about 6000 dollars or more. you'd also be looking at several grand for the shortening of the whole gear and modifying. if you are willing to spend that kind of money. there's a place in cali, that will make you custom high travel shafts for about 800 to a 1000 bucks a piece. and also warn makes custom shafts. you could get the stubby's from them. or if i was gonna spend a lot of cash again. it's getting yota axles and tcase. a lot more capable and cheaper. about 1000 dollars for all the running gear and axle width being shortened. cheaper parts and all kind of goodies. ie 5.89 ring and pinions, marlin dual tcase. up to 400+:1 crawl ratio... -
samurai t-case instead of nissan?
Rooinater replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i wouldn't recomend it. for a couple reasons... that's what i was looking at originally or a yota tcase. i can pick those up no problem. but the outputs are offset for the front which adds odd driveline angles. you might be able to be fine doing it. because the diff doesn't move. so you might be able to swing it. but i will warn you. if you go with anymore of a reduction you are asking for more stub axles to be broken. the main reason they seem to break more often is the torque multiplication of the extra gearing throuwn in with larger tires. if you have problems getting up and going in town use 2 low. for better gearing , just don't drop the clutch. trust me i would know. boom!! i'll be calling WARN one of these days to try to get them to make me chromemolly steel stubs. so they ain't gonna be breaking this easy. but then... i'll see what else will go breaking. the times i've noticed that the actual stubs break. is not just under normal 4xing or driving conditions. ie dropping the clutch on dry pavement... really getting a run at a hill climb, i mean letting the clutch go in low range and flooring it up through second gear on loose rock... those are the only times i've broken them yet. but i'm still gonna try to get ahold of WARN industries. i seem to be one of the few that will keep dumping money like this in my roo, for offroading though. i know a few others. but i always get the lecture. "you'll never get that money back out of it when you sell." in my opinion... if you are planning to do major mods or spend the money to do it right. make sure it's not something you are planning on selling. little roo i'm planning on always keeping!! if you want you will be the first. and i guess you'll find wether it will hold well or not. -
there's one there. and it should be stickied. the reason i put one here to float. is cause not a darn person looks in the meet and greet forum! so there's one in both along with the show your 4x4 forum. please do not move! i'm trying to actually get people to show! and obviously from past experiance in something does not float here in old gen forum. less people show up or even take notice!!!!
