  1. keep me informed on your progress, or what you'll be doing. you have my # if you need anything. and if i'm headed up to pheonix i'll give a shout. when do you leave to pheonix?? i'll warn you to get the major parts in washington. like differant tranny.... i'm sure pheonix has bigger junk yards and probably have the parts... but i know down here and what i've heard about up there... they rip you off. they won't sell certain parts seperate, or they just want to darn much. not always. and pheonix is supposed to be way better for junkyards.
  2. thanks for the compliment. if you are stuck on a wagon and you want another. this is my suggestion. and just mine. get a ea81 82 to 84. swap in a 85 or 86 5 speed d/r out of the ea82. better low range and better gearing. make sure you aren't gonna be scarred to dent her. mine was a perfectly straight body when i got her. now she's seen it all. first dent i freaked a little, since then i don't really care. then a welded rear diff. you can remove one axle for street driving, so it performs as an open diff in front wheel drive. which it is a 10 min. procedure to remove an rear axle on the ea81 bodied cars. a little longer on the ea82 body's. i did that for years. then go with the 27" swamper SSR on 14" rims or 15" rims. i might be getting beadlocks next year so i could possibly sell you mine begginging of next year. i suggest the 4/3" pk davis lift. small modifications are needed to the shift linkage. but shouldn't need it if you use the actual 5 speed linkage. i had the old linkage modified so it looks stock in the interior. a Weber is a very nice addition to any subaru. i don't know what i did with out it. you might just want to cut the cats and put a larger muffler. to free up the exahaust. if you go true duels on a none built motor you might lose some power... not sure. mine works great with duels. but it's 115hp motor. it'd be nice to not be the only lifted subaru in arizona!
  3. i have twin fans, twin 30 amp relays. i've fried one relay do to a spike of volts going to the fan. so i'd say stay with the higher amp rating. personel experiance and they are only like 5 dollars or less.
  4. pheonix area has a lot more rocks than yuma. tons of dunes down here in yuma area. and rocks too. the highlight there is more of the rocks. i have plenty of gps fixes for trails around pheonix. from easy to most difficult. i'll come up and help you with anything you need help with, ie lift install... your car should be fine. how reliable is it now?? just get a pkdavis 3" lift or i think byb australia is making a 4" now for your style. do you have the d/r transmission?? that's a must. 27" ssr swampers on drilled chevy rims or 14" pugs. they are radials and one of the most quite mud terrains i've ever had or ridden in a vehicle with. you'll also need to saw-z-all the fenders. trim them up a little so they don't rub. a properly jetted weber should pass emissions. cause washington does not have underhood inspections. getting skid plates like tex has on your lift blocks right in front of the rear tire. is a good idea. i recomend dual electric fans and maybe a hood scoop or cowl scoop. just cause it gets around 120 degrees in the summer time. those are all the major things you'd need. everything else is just custom work. and making it unique or to your liking. always could send your car to mudrat and get a tcase mod... don't need that though unless you want to be trying the hardcore trails. as for the driving long distances and having little problems. just make sure you inspect bearings before going on long trips. also carry spare radiator hose and water. those were the only problems i've had on trips back and forth from everett, wa and arizona. keep everything up to date on tune ups and lube changes too. be on top of your maintenance. ever need help, want to get together, go wheel, party, or whatever my cell # is 4253593927. it'll be back on tuesday. phone broke and new one comes tuesday.
  5. it was most likely the wrangler mt/r's they came out within the las couple years. the newest mt goodyear has. all i've read is how awesome they are. they are like glue to rocks due to the soft rubber compound and perform sweet in the mud as well. they are also supposed to be extremely resistant to rock cuts. those were what is was originally planning on switching to. till i saw how sweet the boggers looked on my friends toy back in washington. haven't seen a none wore out pair of those in a long time.
  6. i don't know about the turbos, but i know on my old 1600 the valves started floating at about 6600 to 7000. haven't ran my new motor anywhere near that. not planning on it. and don't need to the power band's peak is around 5500 to 6000.
  7. your right next to subarujunkie. you should contact him. he's always looking for new subaru owners in his area. he lives in Sac. just my suggestion. ea82's have more room. but are boxier. i dislike the look too. my dad has had several problems with the timing belts and other stuff on the ea82's. you can get power steering in either style, just weberize an ea81 and you'll be in heaven. i could locate some 14" pugs too or drilled chevy rims so you can go bigger tires too.
  8. i probably should try a higher octane fuel. i'm using 87, but with the old motor it did it no matter what the octane.
  9. mine is straight duel 1 and 7/8inch to 2" mufflers and 2" tips i have no problem but it's a built motor. mine sounds really beastie idling. i like it that way. sounds like a bigger engine then it really has. ticking sound?? like valve or just something else??
  10. well my carb has never been jetted right. it was used and not off a subaru. so i get a lot of dieseling. and i also want the best of performance out of it. so i need to know the jetting that the bible states for the ea81 engines. thank you. need to rejet as soon as i get the cash. probably next month after i pay everything off. along with a hotter coil. and new fuel pump and regulator. searched but found too many answers that were way differant.
  11. swapped a weber on and no problems since. not much a problem before either... make sure it's not bad before buying the car and keep it clean so mothing gets sticky. but a weber is the best way to go on any carbed subaru.
  12. what are you gonna use the wagon for? i prefer the EA81 body style. no timing belts in the engine. all gears. versus 2 belts of the EA82's. if you are using it for wheeling. EA81's a few inches narrower and a shorter wheel base by a couple inches too. they are all carbed. 1980 model was a single range 1600 transaxle though. the wagon bodystyle's were made from 80 to 84. for the EA82 style wagons, 85 and 86 are supposed to have the lowest low range or better gearing.
  13. yeah i remember reading an article awhile back about those. not to mention cheaper tires, versus the bogger. i wasn't saying they suck in the mud. just a bar below. but once again i'm mainly in AZ and So Cal. so there's more desert rock crawlin than mud... and goodyears have a very soft rubber... rock glue...
  14. there is no schwab's in arizona, washington yes, az no, already checked. but the goodyear's are very popular tires around here for the rocks. they aren't Supposed to be as good in the mud as any swamper, but for rocks they have a very sticky and soft rubber compound. i'm in Yuma right now, so it rains twice a year. and only a drizzle. but if you go to pheonix they have water on the trails. when i go back to washington permanately in 3 1/2 years. i'll probably go back to swampers for sure, cause i have had nothing but good luck with them and the mucky mud that's up there. side lugs are very important down here due to running low tire pressures on the rocks.
  15. i'm gonna be getting a tow rig for Lil' Roo when i get back from my deployment. so street handling isn't a big deal. that's the only reason i even listed bias plys. cause on the street they are too noisy. just offroad strength and traction. the goodyears are supposed to be almost indistructible side walls same with the bias ply tires from swamper. i've seen the ssr's slice sidewalls at lower psi. but love the quiet road drive and sweet sid lug traction.
  16. well i'm deciding to stay with the 31" tall tires. but now have a dilema of trying to decide which ones to buy at tax return time. the cost has no effect. need an all around good trail tire. and these are the one's i've decided on. just need to narrow down a little further. which one's do you think i should get?? 31x12.50 Super Swamper Boggers 31x10.50 Super Swamper SSR 31x10.50 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R
  17. ssssswwwwweeeeettttttt!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see it and maybe for a ride! your gonna be smoking me on those trails up there. i'm still trying to get used to having 3 shifters. figuring out what lo range i need on certain terrain. rocks here in AZ are easy though... dual low cause they are dry and have loads of traction... hopefully i can make it up there for a trail competition with you before i go over seas!! isabele will be snow free the next time i'm home! hint hint
  18. nice collection! i need to collect more but the gov't won't let me store them in the barracks parking lot just a small tip... go into the gallery under members rides or something like that and start a small gallery. that way you don't have to multiple posts, and we don't have downlosd a lot of attachments. quicker and easier.
  19. you could buy hi flow cats though. kind of spendy but will give you more power. http://www.paeco.com i believe sells some. but they are costly. you could also go to larger diamiter exahaust tubing...
  20. how tricky of trails would you want? cause there's anything from mild to wild within 45 minutes of pheonix. do you want scenic dirt road style trails. or more of a moderate to easy trail. more rock and just a little tuffer. or we could go do the most difficults in the same area! j/k your car won't do the most difficults. tell me what you guys want and where. i'll start planning.
  21. i know brian (Subafly) has been with tape and magic marker. i would have but by the time i thought about it i had too many dents to remember where i did them. so i handed a marker to bri and he wrote down the trails. battle_wagon_medic, does this all the time. he's rude, and jealous. and a wuss, all talk and no show... my car has never been under a 4" lift. except stock. so obviously he's on crack. cause that would mean i was asking for trouble with the 4" lift... he's too dumb to realize what my car has been through and is being abused through as we speak. i use my car he can't cause he's a pansy momma's boy. my car is like driving a sherman tank. (can't spell and hung over so i'm seeing multiple. sorry) it goes everywhere, it's awesome!! it breaks cause of old age, hint the topic name. as soon as i sober up i got to go work on my car.
  22. hmmm.... what haven't i done.... haven't hit any city power poles! j/k no there's not much that car hasn't seen or bumped into. it's starting to see even more rock crawling though. it actually crawls now!! no more high speed rock crawlin' and clutch slipping. need to get digi cam fixed. then i can take movies and pics!! and invade all the gallery's!
  23. well i was just going to try to get people from so cal or az to come and play. i was thinking superstition mtns or imperial dunes. let me know if anyone wants to get together and do something. i wasn't really planing on anything hard. superstition has a fairly easy trail that loops the whole orv area, which has side trips for the harder stuff. all of it is avoidable. So come and join the West Coast Stompers and play in the sand and rocks. stock vehicles should be fine. Let me know if anyone is interested. most of you probably will be with your signifigant other. but come out and play. if people want we could turn it into a campout too. which is what i'll be doing anyways. plus everyone that wanted to see my car in action could come see it. not to mention if you come and play you gain membership. if your driving.
  24. most of them didn't care much about the adventure... they just said that sucks. but i mainly get good reviews of my car. there's few that still harass me about it being a subaru, "why not a jeep?" too expensive... but i might start a yota project in the next couple years... to complement my roo.
