well finally got to start working on lil Roo again. changed the ball joint. it was a trail repair ball joint. i forgot it was bad. and then forgot about it. you could step on the ctl arm and pull it out 1/4" to 1/2". it was loose. now it's not. the reason i used a bad one is a long story. i needed to get out of the desert. it was over a hundred degrees out. getting dark. there's a post somewhere explaining it. i seperated the ball joint...... and a whole heep of messes. patched her together in the sand. anyways there was a lessoned learned 50+ mph in the dunes in a subaru=bad... i know GD brought up a while ago i have the worst problem with wheel bearings. well i do i guess but don't at the same time. i'll explain. the first wheel bearing i replaced was 2 years ago. on the drivers side (the one that's busted now). but the hub i replaced the bearing in, is not the hub that's there now. anyone that's been around awhile might remember my fubar of the hub. right after i got the lift i mangled that drivers hub. i know tex remembers... he was there. forgot to tighten a bolt and... mangled it. so changed the hub. and that's the bearing that just went bad. the one that was in the replacement hub. and then a bearing on the way down here. but i had an idea it was going bad. so it finally went. payday, when all my checks go out. i'm buying a set of bearings, and a tool to change the stub axle in the rear. then it's a superstition mtn run on saturday. i got a few disposable cameras. take some photos and put them on disks when developed. rock action and dune photos of my car with the lift!! ignition is being rigged so it works for now.

that sucks. well i compiled what i got and found and posted them. got to get ahold of brian, see if he ever got those downloaded. -
you got to realize, been there and rolled the car. i don't care about the damage. and i'll try anything. i'm going up to pheonix hopefully in the next couple months to run the terminater trails and woodpecker trails. i'm sure they aren't that much worse. subaru's have always been told you can't an we have. get me, ken, eric and john. and we'll show you where they can go. i can do circles in the rocks around a lot of the rigs here in yuma. as soon as lil' roo is on the road again. i'll get pics of the off trail rock face on the laguna mtn ridge trail. not really part of the trail but a sick rock face. with holes up to 3 feet deep and 2 foot ledges. it's sick! haven't tried it since the car has been modified. cause i have a blownstub axle in the locker i need to replace. but don't doubt the subie and crazy people behind the wheel. i'll find a way. supposedly i couldn't make it through a lot of things, cause it's a suby. driving technique and lines are major things needed. take the wrong lines and you are screwed in any vehicle. let us try before you say we can't. cause i will.

just making sure. i've tried to find custom axles. but the best ones i've found in my opinion were $500 a piece. front telescoping axles and up to 40 degree angles on the upper part of the axles. but too much fab and money if one breaks...

not sure. but mine ='s around 60-65:1. i believe that's about what i figured out a while back. it crawls nice now. no more high speed rock crawling for me. ask subafly about my highspeed rockcrawling... interesting experiences. yes larger tires and motor are great! but without the gearing rocks can be outright scary. even with my 27" tires on a 1600 it was scary as hell. now it's like crawling, time to react, not point and gas it. then hope you don't bounce off the line you need. 27's and an 1800 are a great combo for all around wheeling, that's why most of the HP sits on that combo. cause in my opinion it's the best for what they do. and not changing the drivetrain. i'll be owning a few more set up like that. but for now i got little roo and it's crawl. with 31's it's a creep crawl. and 3 low ranges you have a set of gears for all terrain. as for the stub axles, yes they do break... there's gotta be a weak point somewhere... with stock gear.

why would you have to go 8" lift... that don't make any sense. the drivelines will cost ya. cause you got to get cut and balanced if you are driving it on the street. clearance issues with my shift linkage and the driveline we did have that issue with the drivelines. other than that no. it's all gonna be a learning experience. cause no one's done one to model off of, or to help. cause it's not been done yet. i know john wants to put up an ea82. he also has one or 2 at least my size ea81 coming up. just my suggestion if you are planning to do moderate to hard trails, without the tcase, don't go with 31" tires. just fyi and my opinion. you won't have the gearing and i've seen several people be slipping the hell out of clutches and frying them. not enough gearing. 27" SSR's is what i reccommend if you do not use the tcase.

now for utah, i'm 6 hours from moab, how far are you. i'd love to come up and play. i'm so sorry for helping hi jack this post. but for the moab trip. you can't do it this year. cause i said so. i don't have any leave. and i'm deploying in june. if the military makes me miss one more trip like this i'll go crazy. the car is set up for it now. and i'll try all those helldorado, hole in the rock, pritchett canyon. cause i ain't scared and i usually don't say never till i try. unless i'm wheeling alone. not to mention lions back.... always wanted to try....

dude we all do stupid illegal or dumb things behind the wheel. you have i have. we all do. grrrr.... not eeven going into the what ifs. anyways back to the exahaust. looks good. hangs a little low. but it's all good. if someone wants to jerry rig up some mounts i don't care. use bailing wire, more power to ya. just don't use safety wire, then it will break...

cough, cough. not to highjack the post or anything. Patrick, you want to go to to superstition mtns/El Centro, early febuary. i'll call when car is up.

go to nc you can get anything done. dear god i saw all kinds of crazy stuff when i was living there.... -
wow 20 minutes a fender! way to long... took me 3 minutes or less per front fender. and 2 minutes per rear fender. straight lines, looked great till i crinkled both fenders off road. i'll give you the key to doing them fast. 2 things -saw-z-all -do it on the car. you still get good clean cuts. how do you think eric bobbed the bed of the brat. with a saw-z-all. not trying to be a pain. it looks great though!! wasn't trying to be a pain. just constructive critisism. looks awesome!

Real quick, which wire is positive?
Rooinater replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
blue/yellow on car wire harness and black/white on the pump's wire harness are the hot wires. or at least on my car that's how it's wired. -
that's the school i was going to go to. then i joined the marine corp. 27,000 was too much to go into debt for me. so i'll make the corp pay for my schooling when i get out. i'm going to be taking welding here when i get back from deployment. i had recieved a small scholorship from my highschool to help pay. but not enough so i turned it down. i'd say just keep it registered in washington. that way when you move back up there you don't have to go through state inspections. mine wouldn't pass. no cats, duel exhaust, no emissions, probably differant vin codes on the doors than the body, legality of lift, doesn't have fender flares or mud flaps, and will have beadlocks. technically all kinds of violations of washington. but no one cares. i know around here there are like no cops anyways. billions of border patrol to one or two cops.

several gallons in the spring, summer and fall months. i was bringing 2 to 3 gallons just for myself last fall when i got here. right now i'm bringing 1/2 to a gallon. in other words with the under hood stuff. keep an intake manifold with stock gear and marked hoses to where they go. the weber illiminates about all emissions. all i have is the pcv system with my weber. how often do you smog test in pheonix? cause i was thinking of going to UTI for Auto tech training when i get out of the corp... but probably will go to a school in the great NW.

Best year wagon to look for
Rooinater replied to subanoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well the body on my car has about 217000 miles on it. the engine was needed to be replaced once. all it really needed was to be resealed w/blown head gasket, but replaced the motor anyways. the new motor i replaced it to cause i wanted more power. that's one of the reasons i don't like the subaru fuel injection. old electrical stuff is not cool especially when on the trail. no computer either. but if i put an ej in i'd wouldn't mind about the computer. -
just to warn you. i'll be gone for awhile when you arrive. i'll be being deployed in june, for 6 to 8 months. then i'll be back early 2005 or late 2004.
