Let's see those classic Subies!
Rooinater replied to ricochet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i would have emailed mine in... but i'm in iraq... just a few thousand miles away from my car... so all i really have is lots and lots of offroad pictures and pictures during the lift... if you want those i'll email them. but i don't have interior ar all that stuff. nothing really interesting in there... it's an offroad rig not a show car... but if you need those. when i get back to the marine corp air station in yuma i'll go out rockcrawling and take an @$$ load of pictures! cause i don't got many with the new lift... not to mention the new mods going on... they'll be done with in a couple months of returning home with all luck... let me know. double slip joint rear axles. -update!!!!
Rooinater replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i believe that's what mike did with his. cause the EA82's are supposed to have more flex or something like that. not a 100% sure how. but i talked to him a long while ago about it. i just can't remember if i have the email of how to do what he did. and last time i talked to him about it he hadn't wheeled them too much. but i'm going a differant route all together.... -
well just my 2 cents and what i've talked to welders about. there's always a chance of it breaking. i've ran one for years now. and my original one is in Zapars rig right now. so they can last just fine if you do it PROPERLY. where you want to weld is where it is similar metals. beings the fact the spider gears and the alignment shaft in the center are all tool steel. that is what you weld. you will be making it much weaker if you weld to the open carrier housing!! you would be welding cast and tool steel together... not a strong combination!! at all. I'd suggest using a mig welder so that you have less splatter and no slag to try to clean out. What you'll need: mig welder with a fairly strong wire. oxy/accetelyne tank brake cleaner Open rear differential 1st, remove and open the diff. drain all the oil out and spray down the whole inside with brake cleaner to remove as much oil residue as possible. let the cleaner evaporate. 2nd, set up you oxy/accetelyne torch with a good flame. you'll be using this to preheat the gears. 3rd, place torch inside onto the spider gears and center shaft. try to put as little heat on the ring and pinion gears (if you are not removing the open carrier and R&P's.) heat the gears up till you believe it is sufficent. (don't melt them...) 4th, take your mig gun and put a good tack weld on all 4 corners where the gears meet. on side 1. then repeat on side 2. 5th, put full welds on the 8 total areas (side 1 and 2). where the gears mesh. then what i've had done to all the lincoln lockers i have had made. is to weld the center shaft to the gears. that way the gears will not break and seperate. they are one big piece in the center. NOTE: BETWEEN EACH SIDE AND BETWEEN WELDING THE CENTER IT'S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO MAKE SURE THE GEARS ARE STAYING PREHEATED. SO THROWING IN THE TORCH HERE AND THERE WHEN THERE'S PAUSES IN YOU WELDING IS NOT A BAD IDEA. JUST DON'T OVER DO!! 6th, keep the cover off and let it air cool. don't put anything on it to make it cool quicker. cause you'll make it brittle and easier to break. let it set over night (if possible, but do not fill when warm or hot with oil) then fill with oil. and you are ready to use it. it's suggested to remove one axle while driving on the street. do to the extra strain on the axles and the rest of the rear drivetrain. this is an excellent modification for OFFROAD rigs. it will help gain a lot more traction than a limited slip ever will. HOW TO REMOVE THE AXLE: To remove the axle on a EA81 car. remove lower shock bolt. lift up the rear of the car till the tire is off. punch roll pin out. and wiggle the axle around till you get it off. usually one side or the other will come off easiest. as soon as you find which side. stick with that side to remove. it's also a good idea to put a light lubricant on each time to make sure it removes easier. it's the same idea and the same way as any other rig to weld up the open differential. i drew up some pictures but it won't let me upload anything as an attachment. i'll try to find a way to upload them. if you need them please contact me.

double slip joint rear axles. -update!!!!
Rooinater replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
keep us informed. if you get more travel out of the axles. i know mikew was doing some swapping from the rear axles between ea81 and ea82 to get more travel. if you find a good way and that they are holding up. take pictures of the process and write up a how to. i'll put it on my website. that's if it's ok with you and you aren't trying to sell them. if they hold up let me know. Jared -
i'd suggest at least an 8 inch lift. mine clears ok. i've beaten a little more in the rear of the front fenders and didn't really need to trim anymore than when i had a 4" with 27" tires. as for gearing... the tcase in my opinion is a must for that tall of a tire. not to mention at least 4.11 gears... just my opinion. i've driven 26 and 27 inch tall tires on stock gearing offroad... it's not near as fun as with the tcase. i'm still relearning how to drive the tcase lift, without as much breakage. all the gearing and the tempermental and weak links... as long as you aren't heavy on the throttle you won't really break a lot of stuff. but beings the fact that i got used to going at a little higher speeds on obstacles. with my 4" lift and 27" swampers. i'm still getting used to giong slower. it's a lot easier and better to be able to crawl again! Just my 2 cents if you have some q's im or email me. or i'll try to monitor this post. but as for going with 31" tires on stock gearing... it's your choice but you aren't going to have the power... New Subaru-only Magazine?
Rooinater replied to ricochet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i'm up for several subscriptions. one for me my dad and a friend of the family. but i'd definately say try to split it somewhere in the middle close to 50/50. a lot of the newer gen owners don't even know what we do to these older cars. it'd be nice to get some recognition. and definately do some highlights on customized or restored on and off road older subies. or even some of the newer ones that have been lifted. if you guys start a reader's ride section i bet you you will have 100's to 1000's of photo's being submitted! i know i'll send a ton in. especially if you can use digital pictures. that's mainly what i got. it'd be nice to have a small offroad section too. get it out to the world the offroad capbility of these rigs. articles and how to's for offroad performance and definately off road trip articles!! trust me you'd never be in short supply. new designs and modifications for our rigs is constant and growing quick. samurai's used to be sneered at too... now look at them. they got some recognition, organized and multiplied! i'd always love to read what's new for subaru too! and what their future looks like and their plans. along with newer car mods too. i think in a very quick and short time 60 something pages will be too little but go for it!! we've needed this for years! sorry i'm an offroad and suby nutcase..... my website proves it... check it out it'll show you some good offroad pitures. Semper Fi!! Jared -
by the way David C if you have any questions go ahead and email me or pm me. it'll take me a few days. due to the fact i'm over seas deployed. but i'll get back to the soonest chance i get. what year and style soob do you have?

here we go... let's not start this jump and attack for search this and that. ozified makes a 3" and a 4"/3" kit for them. www.ozified.com there might be a thing or 2 on my website, along with several hundred offroad pics of subaru's. check that out. you can get there by clicking on my signature's picture. as for the just telling people to search! stop that crud! give them some info. otherwise this board is going to turn into the way a lot of people on the pirate board do it. be jerks about it. give him at least the info he wanted. and answer the questions! i don't care how many times it's been asked! start doing that and i'll quit answering your questions about modifications! and tell you " here's a straw, suck it the f#$@ up!"

So far, the stories are false
Rooinater replied to ezapar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
gee i don't know who thinks they are all over NC... the little time i lived there i saw maybe 3. 2 ea82 and 1 ea81. there were some ej's too though. as for Isra... i'll be out your way soon... if you want to head towards bagdad and falujiah area! i'd love to see a subaru again! it's just not the NW eric... they are deprived over there just like the SW... sniff, sniff.... -
how am i cruel?... If i put a straight panel on.... i'd have to change the whole body... hmm... you are giving me ideas...... but you gave yourself a hint. that's all i'll give you. now you've brought up the question should i start with another body... hmmm but i'm too fond i think of little roo to get rid of her or remove dents from her.

small update. we left hawaii 7 days ago. still in the pacific. that's all i can say. i had fun in hawaii. got second degree sun burn on my back... it's finally starting to peel. luckily i successfully avoided being charged with destruction of gov't property. but it still hurts. i'm out of mess duty for at least 30 days. i have it again if we actually ride the boat home. and yes the mods are staying quiet and no they aren't toyota axles. it all depends on how quick i can get it done, and if i can get the neccisary parts. before they get sold. which will determine how, when and if they can get done. when you will know. i know this much it'll at least be 7 months before you will know. anyways i'll update what i can and when i can. The Hatch Patrol story-the unveiling(with pics)
Rooinater replied to Qman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i know i'm coming in really late in this argument towards subaru or not... but i have a few words to say that pretty much have been said... i guess instead of mentioning names i'll just say these things. it is an awesome rig and i can't wait to 4 wheel with you! again! mad props to you ken! i have seen it in person and so badly wanted to go play and see it in action. but i'm sure that'll be next time. the next thing is all of you who are against "non-subaru" mods. i have 2 words to say but can't here. the whole thing with offroad vehicles is in a way it's a compitition with yourself and with others. i'm always changing my vehicle over the last 3 or 4 years. just to make it a more capable and more competitive offroad machine at all cost. MikeW said something about whoever can come up with the cash and fab facilities will be creating an ultimate subaru. all i can say is i'm going to iraq for 6 months to a year... more rocks more mods needed! i'll be disbarred and banned for what i'm planning on doing. and everyone that keeps up with the HP has an ultimate subaru!! Rockcrawling is where i am. give me a rock and i'll try to climb it. over come the obstacles and ignore the people who sneer at you along the way. Jared -
Moab is my goal to have the car ready for by late spring early summer.... that's if i get to the new mods right away and if we ever come back from iraq. otherwise hopefully it'll be going the way it is right now. but it would be 10 times better if i can get the new mods done before hand. but i am planning on having a trailer too by that time. so if it breaks i can tow her back... the newest rumor is we will be out for 9+ months.... the only way i can look at that as being good is that i'll have tons of bank to get the new mods done to my car and get a truck and trailer! Jared Semper Fi!

i never worried about it. it's not really a problem at all. all i did was lube the stub and the axle with a light lubricant ever so often to make installation and removal a snap. other than that i wouldn't worry about it. just don't go trapsing in to the mud that much with out the axle. but even then i did that and the axles still aren't leaking. Jared

we'll see who has the "big rig" if i go through with my plans... well we are crossing the first line that we have to roll are clocks back an hour. around 1 am this morning we will cross it. so far so good. too many rumors and confusion of exactly where we are going. but i'm doing great so far. started mess duty today. i'll keep you all posted as i can. which will be semi frequent till i hit land......... Semper Fi! Jared

Thank You All! i can't wait to be back. it always figures... i start planning new modifications right before i can't touch the car. and you know what happens... last time i went away from my car for 9 months... it got the 8" lift and all the extras... mtsfabman- well i don't know if many will hear of it right away. cause i don't want to ruin it yet. 'hint' you've never seen it... Zapar- I'm all the way down here. i forgot to pick it up. hold on to it for me if you can and i'll get it when i start getting all the other pieces and parts for my new idea. thank you. Duck? where's it at? i'll be good. just wish we new where exactly we were going land based. at least we are supposed to be going to hawaii for a couple days on the way. then underway floating insanity once again. Semper Fi!
