  1. Similar to the Dodge Tomahawk. http://www.allpar.com/cars/concepts/tomahawk.html Viper engine on a bike frame. That will make you the last of the mohicans.... (sorry bad joke) had to do it. BW
  2. Yep CV boot change was my first job too. First one took me 4 hours b/c I was a dufus and I did it while it was dark. Second one took me 45 mins. BW
  3. took a pint of Seafoam and poured 1/2 into my carb and the other 1/2 into the gas tank. Now I am getting great response even when it's cold. It use to stumble badly for 2-3 mins if I tried to drive cold. I could barely get it above 30 mph but now there's a lot less stumble and no problems w/accelaration
  4. Austin check out this website http://www.rqriley.com/doran.html The Doran is a kit car that uses an EA front end. There is a way of making a EV Doran. Not sure if the price of the plans is worth the info, but it may increase your pool of info. Good luck on the project. BTW Please list your sources for parts. BW
  5. What are some of the other costs involved in doing an EJ swap. I plan to make the adapter. BW
  6. Here's what I usually look for when I go motor searching. I first see if there body damage. If yes it's safe to assume that vehicle was running when the damage occurred. If no damage, look at the oil cap and oil dipstick. If it has any white residue it's probably blown HG. If no residue smell oil. Does it smell burnt. Possible bad rings. Best bet is to try and turn the engine w/a wrench. If it turns easily then the internal probably aren't damaged. Then pull the t-belt covers and see if they are intact. IIRK all EA82s and the EJ22 are non-inteferential. I think the EJ25 are inteferential. I think the only way for the engine to be damaged in an accident is if the car is hit in the front and something goes into the engine. For the Tranny, if it's a manual, go through the gears and see if they shift smoothly. Drain the oil look for shavings. Most yards will guarantee their engines and trannys. for tools, I would bring a metric socket set w/extensions, a breaker bar, wire cutters, flat head and phillip screwdriver You can pull a motor yourself. It wouldn't hurt to have a friend come with you. Most yards will have a hoist of some sort to assist in pulling the engine out. BW
  7. I am curious. I have seem alot of early 90 legacys in the J/Y here in So Cal. From the looks of it, body is in good shape and motor looks intact. I plan to pull the EJ motor for a swap. What are some reason people would scrap a legacy? is it Tbelt issues? IIRK EJ22 is non-inteference. so it's based on ignorance. BW
  8. Welcome. My brother wheels in Fairfax VA. I think he said that there are some decent powerline trails that he runs on out in Chantilly. Not sure how far away you are from this place, but George Washington National Forest has a bunch of OHV trails. Here is a site you might want to check out http://www.mudhunters.com/mdtrails.shtml I will send you a PM when I am in the DC area. bW
  9. So I am in the process of building one. IIFK the purpose of the bar is to put tension on the strut towers and form a solid link between the two strut towers. This would eliminate body flex. Design calls for two mounting plates on the strut towers. Then I have a bar in the middle. To create tension I will get a huge screw and that will be mounted to the mounting plate adjustable at the center bar. So.... does anyone know if it is best to make the strut bar pull the struts in or push them out. The two that I have installed both pushed. I could make it do both, but that would require a bit more engineering. BW
  10. You might want to try Paeco for those parts http://www.paeco.com/ Good luck and keep us posted BW
  11. WRXs started on 2002. The Impreza was around way before the whole WRX craze hit. The Imprezas began in 1993. You could get one for around 2k. It mainly depends on what you want to use it for.
  12. Welcome to the board I use to own a Jeep CJ-7 If you are looking more for forest trail/dune driving and not rock crawling or mudding. Go for an Impreza Wagon or an Outback Sport. This will give you the carrying capacity similar to a Jeep Cherokee and the off-road handling for high speed driving. The low center of gravity and the AWD, plus the shorter wheel base will have you going sideways around turns in no time. The OBS can handle mud and stuff, but ground clearance and lack of decent tread are big limiting factors. Lift can be obtained by mounting Forester springs and Legacy outback struts. Imprezas are also easy to mod w/cast off stock WRX parts, front and rear brakes, wheels etc. 2,2L engine as a great workhorse and the 5spd tranny is a blast to drive. In terms of handling, I was on a drive w/a bunch of WRX going up a mountain road. I was 5th in line out of 9 cars. I was able to hand with them all the way up the mountain. Going down was another issue. My brakes overheated and I had to drop back. : BW

Lottery ticket..... the lottery is a tax on the mathematically challenged... but there is that one in 26 million chance... heck I'm feeling lucky, I just found a 87 GL-10 for $150.00 w/36K on the odo. oh yeah.. I forgot it's got no engine. but it has LSD (edit) Ohhh.. I have to buy a ticket now.. this is my 500th post
  14. Went to see the car. 34k on the odo. No motor. FT4wd 5 spd with LSD. Super clean interior and exterior My friend has an 88 GL-10 w/FT4wd 5sp lsd that just got into an accident and he is considering doing a swap. Regardless I get to have the front seats, LSD, rear disk brakes for a mere $75.00 ohh. yeah the only catch is that I don't go RallyXing as the $75 ate up my play budget.
  15. what part of the engine did the fire occur? e-mail me and I can send you a copy of the PDF files I have. wangb(at)metro(dot)net
  16. got it so basically pain of engineering the set up would would outweight benefits. I already have the XT6 alternator. Just concernd about when it decides to buy the farm. Ohh on another note, EJ Alternators output is 75 amps for the 2.2L impreza and the 2.5 Forester and 85 amps for the 2.5 DOHC motor. these were based on the 1999 models. http://www2.autopartsauthority.com/parts/autopartsauthority/wizard.jsp?year=1996&make=SU&model=OUT-4WD-001&category=F&&part=Alternator anyone thought of retro-fitting these to an EA motor?
  17. Saw an ad for an 87 non-specified turbo. Needs engine. So what are the chances that I will find a LSD tucked underneath it? BW

Or get one of mini backhoe http://www.newholland.com/na/Products/product_pics/mini_backhoe.jpg Then you can pull your self up
  19. Has anyone tried mounting two alternators/two battery system? One would run the main engine components and such and the other would be used to run all your other auxilliary components. A stock alternator could be mounted in the AC bracket and the AC belt could be used to run it. It could then be wired to another battery. I am not sure how a single battery would respond to double the amps. Can anyone move versed in Auto electrical wiring/workings chime? Thanks BW

    RallyCross woes.

wooo hoooo .. it's this weekend!!!!!!!!!! I have to mount some lights b/c the RallyX starts at 4:00. Depending on the number of cars, it could go well into 9:00 pm. Going to bring a barb-q and cook dinner. Spend some quality time with the wife while we wait. Who knows maybe I can convince her to go on a run as a passenger. BW
  21. I almost drowned my tinkerbell once. I was wheeling and ended up flooding the passenger side. Well after I got out of the stream, it tinked for about 5-10 mins. It was hilarious. BW
  22. where is the fuel pump control unit. I did have to swap out my fuel pump b/c I died on me. Another problem that my be related is that both of the duty solenoids are constantly on. I have yet to find someone that can tell me info about the duty solenoids and how they work. (will check the air filter today after work) BW
  23. I am trying to change the seals in my oil pump. Ca anyone give me an idiot's guide to removing my oil pump? Specifically how many bolts to remove and where they are located. Thanks. BW
