tranny has a hole in it. (WHAT TO DO, WHAT NOT TO DO)
So I had a short day Thursday so I go wheeling with a friend of mine. Long story short I hit a rock with my Tranny and I knock a hole in it. Manage to limp the BRAT over to a parts shop and I get some more gear oil and a tube of that permasteel putty stuff. It hold long enough to get me home. I take my wife to her christmas party in the BRAT and when we leave, there is a huge pool of gear oil. Luckily we live about a mile from her work. So I get more of that putty stuff on Saturday and I patch it. After putting more oil in it still leaks. Cleaned it off the best I could and it's down to a drip. So... At this rate I am going to have the entire bottom of my Tranny covered with that stuff. What's the best way to get the oil to stop leaking. I think welding is a bit late b/c it now covered with a huge patch of epoxy. BW

why me god, why always me?!?
not sure if you are interested in this but on the Recycler.com there is a legacy in PA for 200 bucks. The dude bought it at auction and towed it with a regular tow truck and killed the tranny. here is the link http://www.cars.com/go/search/fs_search_results.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&cid=&dlid=&dgid=&amid=&cname=&zc=22030&makeid=45&modelid=&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=ascending&sortfield=SORT_INDICATOR+ascending%2CPRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7CE-%7CM-_45_%7CB-1000%7CN-N%7CR-100%7CI-1%2C3%7CP-SORT_INDICATOR+ascending%2CPRICE+descending%7CQ-ascending%7CZ-22030&aff=recycler&aff=recycler Buy that and do an engine swap. changing the clutch
I just did the clutch w/the engine out method. It's fairly simple to do. I used a 6 x 6 beam w/a come-along to get it back in. With the engine out it's a great time to do a re-seal. have fun

Subaru rally jump n crash vid
Well isn't that rally is all about drifting? He could just bust a drift down the straights and go straight in the corners.

AWD Legacy wagons in sand?
I had my BRAT w/M/S tread on the sand. I just aired down and went at it. I mostly drove in 2wd. I learned that the key is to keep your momentum up.

BRAT back seats as lawn chairs?
Anyone ever try making a frame for the BRAT seats so they can be taken off and used as a lawn chair? It would be a pretty neat accessory. bW

Only Pieces left
One a similar note, I saw a 1985 BRAT in the PAP the other day. Interior was the cleanest I have ever seen. NO DASH CRACKS or VENT ROT. Engine and tranny have under 50k on it. I took the rear tail gate chrome. YES.. I found that piece BRAT1709 took... the engine, the tranny, seats, door trim, t-top windows, dash, vents, axles, carpet, etc, etc etc. One BRAT died to keep 4 of his brothers alive. it is an honorable way to go. Brake bracket, EA82 to EA82
I guess this belongs here. I need to replace my brake calipers and mounting bracket. I am having a hard time finding an EA81 to get it from. Will an EA-82 caliper and mounting bracket work? Can this work and is there anything that I need to be aware of. Thanks BW

EA81 brake Rotor/lug nut assembly interchange w/EA82?
Lost castle nut and the wheel broke of the car. bounced a few times and smacked the hood of another car. Luckily no one was hurt. BRAT is now gimpy, (ie missing driver side wheel) Getting frustrated at the car. Fiance is getting ticked too. But like I said NO ONE WAS HURT AND NOTHING WAS BROKEN THAT CAN'T BE FIXED. ahh... there.. that made me feel alittle better. BW

BOB trannyectomy successful, BRAT in recovery.
WOO HOOOO.. Finished up yesterday. All bolts and wires got connected and fired her up. The only thing that I noticed was that the clutch cable is badly stretched. So I will need a new one of those. I think there is some drive shaft vibration in 4wd that needs to be looked at. BW

Just got my first car today... And other assorted fixing fun.
Welcome. Remember, if you notice that your Subaru starts to multiply, it's a sure sign that the virus has infused into your DNA. There is no cure. Only constant monitoring to keep it at bay. Good luck BW

I need to confirm the wiring for the coil. Positive terminal has three wires to it. One black from the disty, one black from the resistor and one yellow black. negative terminal has two wires to it. One yellow from the disty and one yellow red. Here is what's been happening with the engine swap. The tranny and the engine are both mated together. All hoses and wires are connect and once I finish tightening down the tranny engine bolts, replace the alternator belt and change the gear oil in the tranny I should be ready to fire it up. Here is a summary of the completed project S/R to D/R swap. Replaced tranny Shifter slop fixed Removed AC components. Installed cyclops grill light Re-sealed oil pan, valve covers and rear main seal Adjsted valves And all I was suppose to do was replace the clutch. Thanks for all of the help BW

Southwest meet, anyone?
Sounds like there are two trips in the works. One for the family trip to the Grand Canyon area and one to Moab. I guess around the first of the year we can start a specific thread for each one. Sounds like it will be a great time.

BOB trannyectomy successful, BRAT in recovery.
Well it went much worse than I thought it would go. Got the engine out Friday night. So we tried to work the shifter and it's STILL STUCK IN 4th. So basically the tranny is screwed. Saturday I go to the PAP and I find a Hatch that looks like it was rolled w/a DR 4SP. Took up 1 hour to pull and 1/2 or so to bang out the drive shaft. Sunday cleaned the Tranny w/Gunk and removed the old tranny. I pull the cover off of the old tranny and I notice some holes in the walls below the gears. So now that I have the tranny and engine out....I plan to tighten up the shifter. What would I need if I were to fab up a 2inch lift right now? Also is there a seal that I need to replace in the rear driveshaft?

BOB trannyectomy successful, BRAT in recovery.
So the day has finally come. The cruddy clutch that was in my BRAT gave out. I have hoping to get a little more use out of it, but no such luck. It's stuck in fourth. So getting a brand new clutch kit for $102.00 and gonna slap that sucker in. Ok maybe not slap as it will probably take me twice as long to do this b/c it's my first time. I am going for the engine removal method. I plan to re-seal oil pan and the valve covers and adjust the valves. Anything else I need to do? Also what other parts do you anticipate I need. Like exhaust gaskets or something like that. I did soak the exhaust bolts w/some wd-40, hopefully they won't break off. wish me luck. BW
