Newer Legacy Some Questions
Ok heres the history. 1997 Subaru Legacy GT Drove it from iowa city to west des moines with no problems. Around 200 or so miles. Immediately the next day. You start it, and it runs for 5 to 10 minutes then dies. You cant restart it for 5 to 20 minutes latter. Then it starts and runs fine until it dies again. After the 5 to 20 minutes it starts like nothing was wrong. I have tried jump starting it but does the same thing. I put the battery form my car in it and started fine but alternator seemed to be pulling a draw. So took the battery and alternator to the parts store. Both have seemed to check out fine. Things that have been checked. Battery was good but now drained and getting charged. Possibly new one on the way. Alternator i thought was bad but took it to autozone and tested good there. Checked ignition module and wires. They are in decent order and working properly. Fuel has been checked to the filter and after the filter and works fine. What am i missing here.

Checked fuel pump, its working past the filter. Buy the way is the filter suspost to be heavy. Im pretty sure its the original. Battery tested ok at first until the drain was bad. Then i tested the alternator and seems to not be chargeing. Is it possible this shutdown issue is the alternator. Its the only basic thing i can find not working.

Newer Legacy Some Questions
Ok going over there to check some things out. Well see what i can come up with. Will take som pictures. Fuel pumps should humm somewhat when the key is in the on position right. Is it obvious or do i need to hover around the tank.

Bought a Multimeter

New tools for me
I agree with GD on the craftsman screwdrivers. For the backyard mechanic or the weekend wrencher i find craftsman more then fine. Have used them all my life and still have some that i got when iwas 12. But i do agree with gd about the screwdrivers. The big pack craftsman they sell do break often. But then again when i can return it whats the big deal. I have craftsman, stanley, harbor frieght, china brands screwdrivers. They break, they dont break whatever i buy a new one if i need it. As for your tools good job, i hold my tools to be one of my most valuable investments. Much like a caveman with his rock hammer and spear. Gives me pride in fixing or maintaining something. I have a 3 ton jackstands because i had a fullsize truck once but still the 2 1/4 jackstand. I find a larger jackstand to be more then helpfull. With the larger dish to jack up and the overall ability of the jack. But what you have is enough for a suby. I have also invested in a good corded hammer drill. I like the battery stuff for small jobs but for big ones i find batterys dont last long. At least for the tools i can afford. I just got a craftsman multimeter, flood lights, and a the extender bar, swivel attachment, and up and down attachments tools with my christmas money. Me and the inlaws dont get along that great but they know to get me that sears gift card for christmas. Really helps build up my tools. And yea the after christmas sales are awsome at sears.

Bought a Multimeter
Have no idea how the hell to use it. But i know all the mechanics i know have one so i bought one to test batterys and alternators. Maybe fuses one day. Ill figure it out. Just one more step to improveing my mechanical abilities.

Cleaning Tools
Heres the thing, i have the week off of work and ive decided to organize my tools so ill be bringing everything into the house to do this. Probally in the kitchen. They dotn need to be super clean just all the grease off them would be nice. I think ill leave the other tools alone just organize the sockets and wrenches.

Cleaning Tools
3 years agoi did the power steering pump on a 92 dodge caravan. My tools have never been the same since. I was wondering what you guys use to clean up your tools after useing them. Soak them in gas, just wipe them off. Whatever, im curious. I got some new tools for x mas but its time to clean up the ones i have and organize my toolbox tools and my junkyard -portable fix cars tool blx.

Towing a 97 Outback AT??
The Dude Abides replied to esteveW's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXbut iff you remove the driveshaft isnt that just basically putting it in front wheel drive and letting the rear wheels spin freely.

Newer Legacy Some Questions
Yea interested in the no start issue. Heres the problem, my brother being the way he is isnt interested in dumping huge amounts into the car if its going to be problematic. Ive never know a coil to do things like this soo its kinda like where do we go from here. Again car shuts off and will just turn over and over for like 5 minutes until voala it starts and runs fine again. Oh and are NGK wires the same as oem wires. As far as plugs go, id go with ngk but i didnt know if i needed to go platnum, or v grove, or any of those other kooky types.

Newer Legacy Question. 90-94 or 95-99
Ok so people keep telling me that the newer legacys arent very good and that 90-94 are the best years. So my question is it that the new legacys all had HG problems or only the 2.5 versions. Some newer legacysl 95-99 had 2.2s and i was wondering if these engines were ok. I think there about 30 les hp then the 2.5 versions but i was wondering what you guys thought. Im thinking about saveing up for a legacy:rolleyes: and need to knwo the best verson to get. The older ones 90-94 dont seem to be to visually appealing but are iron tough. The newer ones 95-99 have a better look but i hear people question there relibility.

Newer Legacy Some Questions
Ok, stalled out again on him. Problem is that it just stalls out with no warning then 5 to 10 minutes latter it starts back up. I checked the coil it seems fine. Its starts up again so everything seems normal. There was an alternator recall that said it shut off after a while, could it be that. Im kinda lost on ideas here guys.
