Subaru 360...
There is an oil check valve on the 360. It's at the inlet to the oil pump. They leak. It's just a ball and spring. You can take it apart, clean it and stretch the spring a little. It might help. I haven't had much luck with mine, even cleaning and stretching it. When the car sits for a long time, a lot of oil leaks past the check valve and it smokes like an active volcano for about 10 mins. If I drive it everyday it's not so bad.

Catalytic converters...just checking to make sure I've done it all

2.2 crankshaft pulley
subaru360 replied to monk50's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf the outer ring slips it's bad. A used pulley is cheap and easy to find. $20 is a fair price for one. I have piles of them if you need one. Any EJ engine pulley will fit any other EJ engine. I've used the under drive pulleys and they work fine with no issues.

Catalytic converters...just checking to make sure I've done it all
subaru360 replied to charm's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThank god this is a non issue on the newer subarus. 02 and up you can retune the car to delete troublesome codes like 420. On the old ones the correct fix is new converters from subaru. Expensive and not guaranteed to work. I've yet to come across anyone who spends that kind of money on a 10+ year old car. The anti foulers work 90% of the time for me. Is it a perfect solution, no. But I like results.

98 Outback - What would you do to off road it?
subaru360 replied to springer-'s topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI would add skiplates for the oil pan and rear diff. Get some offroad or snow tires. You might as well cut off the bottoms of the outback bumper covers, since you'll just tear them off anyway. Outbacks sit fairly high already, you might not even need a lift.

i need help on a turboing my motor
subaru360 replied to 92Suby's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFirst off OP, find out what exactly you have for engine parts. An EJ22 with EJ25 dohc heads will be slightly lower than 9:1 compression, which is fine for boost. Your biggest problem is going to be engine management and fuel delivery. You need a piggyback or standalone ECU to properly run an older subaru turbo engine. You also need a bigger fuel pump and injectors. If you just stick a turbo on there, the 30 plus degrees of timing it runs, with the stock injectors and fuel pump, you'll kill the engine almost instantly. To all the doubters, I have a 93 EJ22 shortblock, all stock in my 02 wrx and it runs great with 22 psi of boost everyday. But it's correctly tuned, you can't do that with any pre-'02 cars. So, you need some sort of aftermarket engine management, plus injectors and fuel pump.

Head Gasket, $2900?!?-need mechanic!
subaru360 replied to reelst's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWow they get a lot in the NW to service subarus. Out here in PA, I get $800 labor to do 2.5 DOHC head gaskets. For the people who just want the cheapest possible way out, 2 head gaskets, change the oil and reseal the separator plate, it's $900. Anything else you want changed, timing belt, water pump, idler pullies, other seals, no extra labor charge, it's apart anyway. People in my area would turn around and walk away if quoted $2900. You can buy a nice Outback here for $2000. For the EJ22 swap option, I get $500 to swap the engine. I get used engines, no warranty for $100 and get $100 more to pull it at the EZ pull. $20 for oil and filter and that gets people back on the road for $720.

2003 Forester HG Issues?
subaru360 replied to 9098's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDon't pass on a potentially good car just because it might have a leak at some point. It's not the huge deal some make it out to be.

Fumoto oil drain valve
subaru360 replied to J A Blazer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThey work, I don't like them. On a subaru they are too vulnerable to getting torn off.

I Hate My Legacy!!
subaru360 replied to Bucky92's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've seen this car, it looked worth fixing to me. Head gaskets are cheap and easy. Buy a $50 gasket set on Ebay, pull the engine and seal the whole thing up. The ebay gaskets work fine in a 2.2. The whole job takes 4 or 5 hours.

thermostat

How hard...
subaru360 replied to heartless's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt's a pain to change it in the car. It can be one though. If you have other leaks and need to do other work, you might as well just pull the engine out, so you can do a neat job of it. You can get cheap complete gasket sets for EJ22's on ebay that work well. Erastick or something like that is the brand.

Old Style Vs. New Style T-belt Tensioner
subaru360 replied to lostinthe202's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you use the complete setup, bracket that bolts to the block, tensioner and pulley, all the EJ ones interchange, except the wrx/sti turbo ones. The turbo cars have an extra small pulley on them. I've used new ones on old engines and old ones on new engines, just use the complete setup. All the EJ blocks are the same externally. Everything just bolts on. I have a 93 legacy EJ22 block in my 02 WRX and everything bolted right on.

EJ enine oil pan compatibility?
