Welcome to the wachky world of shim buckets. They rarely go back together the way they were. You need to start at the begining of the adjustment procduce and check all the clearences. You'll then need to remove the shims using the special bucket compressing tool, on the ones that are off and measure them with a mic. And then based on the clearence you had and the shim you measured you get a new shim. It is a HUGE PIA good luck.

will they accept impreza axles or do legacy outback axles have a different spline count then impreza axles? They are the same. I just put 97 legecy front driveshafts in a 99 imp works fine no issues. I can just use my 2.2 manifold I think. No, but if the years are the same the connectors might all match the harness. The intakes are different.

Well the fishing trip was GREAT:banana: !!! Didn't catch a lot of fish but the eye candy was every where on the beach on the opposite shore. Best day I've had in 5 weeks. I don't disagree with anything you said NorthWet. If things where going better with this project as a whole I might be inclined to go with the same HG, it looks fine. No one could tell by looking that it, that it had ever touched an engine block. But when things are going as bad as they have for the last 5 weeks I don't tempt fate! I have a second EJ22 that was cooked good but is worth fixing I'll use it on that after the mojo changes.

Chipped crankshaft pulley...

Update: The piece of bolt came right out with a left twist drill. Here's a bit of info you guys can debate while I'm out catching striped bass and getting buzzed in my kayak today. The machinest told me that the old gasket would be just fine to use, told me not to waste my money. Too late but, maybe I'll use it when I put the other engine back together. Also he doesn't think that the head or block could get warped from one bolt being overtorqued. This guy has been at this for 30 years, his shop is right in the middle of about 6 service centers that all use him. I asked them all about his work and got postive responses. I found him by calling the Soob dealer that does my emissions inspections and asking them what machine shop they use. What ya think? I'll check back tonight.

Grinding Valve Seats and Margins at Home?
screwbaru2 replied to DirtyMech's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've done this a few times but not to Soobs. If the valves are new and the seats in the head are not burned or pitted you don't need to grind. Lapping the valve to the seat with lapping compound will do the trick. You want to see a narrow uniform "line" around the valve face and head seat. After putting the valves back together (spings installed) spray carb cleaner into the ports, if it doesn't leak out from around the valves after a few minutes you were sucessful! If not keep trying until they seal. Or take it to a machine shop and have a beer. -
Is this the car where you got this good advise?: The next step is to take it to a professional, because you need to throw a set of gauges on it to see what the pressures are. Sure you can just throw money at it and start adding refridgerant, but it wont solve the issue of where the refridgerant went to begin with. I dont remeber if the cooling fans will come on if the system is low on pressure. nipper I'd take it if I were you.

Bingo! That is the kind of system I was describing. It's always worked great I my soobs. All the soobs I buy are high mileage and this is one of the 1st things I have done to em. I've never done it more than once to any car. If the fuel filter is changed regular and the tank isn't run dry once is enough.

Since I don't want to sound silly I'll be more specfic. The motor is running on whatever is in the can(s) that say cleaner on them that are connected to the fuel rail AFTER disconnecting the fuel line. I don't know if the cans contain just cleaner but the motor is running on whats coming out of them.

Thanks GrossGary. Yeah we have emissions here in the biggest little state in the union or as I like to say the littlest Big Brother in the union. I've got to make this swap as good has possible so they don't have any obvious reason to start poking around. A machine shop here that does soobs says he can drill and tap the head for under $100.0 nothing is cheap. I think I could do it myself but the way things have been going the C note seems like cheap insurance.

I'm in the middle of Subaru HELL. I've got 5 soobs and only 1 on the road. I bought a 1997 non egr ej22, engine didn't know it was non egr when I bought it over the web. I need to know if putting on a egr head is all I need to do, along with the intake of course. I've got a egr head I can use if its good. Before I send it to the machine shop for inspection and resurfacing I want to know it'll be worth it. So who can help me?
