  1. one test for the MAF that i always felt is reliable is.....with the engine running take the butt end of a screwdriver and just tap on the top of the MAF sensor a few times.....if the car stumbles or stalls....than the MAF is bad.......
  2. NICE!....yes welcome to the board...there are so many smart people here....i cant tell you how much i have learned from only being here for like 5 months......any questions.....post away!
  3. thanks grossgary..... i couldnt really think of any other way to do it.......JB Weld.... no just kidding........you know it is really amazing how repetition helps you do things......this will be the 3rd time i have had my trans out and now i know like every single bolt size and step i have to take and were to cut corners......
  4. ok well i found out that one of my bolts for my front cross member came out......so that was the awful noise i was having......all mounts are good and linkage is tight........i tried to put it in 4th again today and BAM it pops right out........also 1st gear is starting to whine........all this on top of the need for a new Viscous coupler....well rather than deal with everything seperately i ordered a used Trans out of another 96' in Rhode island....the place is called LKQ....we use them for pretty much every engine and trans. we replace at work......it even comes with a 6 month parts warranty.....i spoke with them extensively and they said if anything happens internal within those six months they will get me another trans for FREE.....so i said "does that include the center diff." he said YES......so i got another trans on the way....hopefully here by thursday they said......they also said that it was out of a Subaru with 93,000 miles.........all that having been said I paid around $500 for it including delivery............Back to the bolt that fell out......is there any way to kind of rethread that bolt hole (its in like the body of the car) i noticed it was almost fully stripped and was thinking about running a tap through it....any other ideas?....also the thing that was weird was that while the hole is like completely stripped the bolt threads are almost perfect........nonetheless if anyone has anything they think will help or any comments please post......i hope that i am closing in on the end of my trans problems........:-\
  5. thanks a bunch mellow....i have been wanting to see one of those reports for my sub. for a while.....
  6. while your in there you might want to do the front cam seals and the front crank seal....
  7. not to sure about subarus but around my way i had to get my windshield in my old saturn replaced and it ran me about $400 installed....they came to my house and everything.....the only thing i wasnt to happy about was that they left my car a mess......
  8. yeah the only thing im missing is that little spring that keeps the tension on shifter knob....i dont think that would do it though......the shifter bushings dont seem that bad.....i would like the get the spring on there and see how things feel before i go ahead and replace the bushings........i will get it in the air today and double check that everything is tight......but this started happening even before i just did the clutch.....it stays in every other gear just fine 1,2,3,5........what i do notice is that when the shifter is in gear and im cruising..when i push on the gas the shifter kind of jerks further into gear, than the same thing happens when i let off the gas.....is this any indication of anything?..........Subaru 360.....were is harrys U pull it?
  9. mdjdc- what was your fix?......i just took a drove to get some gas and i feel like a looseness when i let out the clutch....it may sound stupid but i think the whole trans was moving slightly when i shifted......i better double check all the bolts for the crossmembers/driveshaft etc etc.....the last thing i want to do is replace a trans that isnt bad..... thanks again for all the ideas fellas.....if you have anything other ideas i will give it a check........
  10. thanks for the input fellas i will double check everything tomarrow when i get it in the air........im fairly sure all the mounts are tight and the linkage is tight........the weird thing is that it goes into gear smooth and everything...than just pops out......
  11. ok.....as some of you know my current problems with my 96 legacy ej22 have been with the clutch....well that is all replaced and working wonderfully.....now on the drive home today my suby started popping out of 4th gear you could go down and move it out than right back in again but now every time i put it in 4th it pops right out.....this is the origional trans with almost 190,000 on it......so do i go ahead and remove the trans for a 3rd time to put in a good used unit?......i know i would have to call around for prices but what are the going rates where you guys are for a 5 speed manual trans out of a 96' legacy?.....any help or insight would be appreciated......
  12. could someone who has access run a carfax for me.......96 legacy... 4s3bd4355t6205875.....thanks in advance for your help....
  13. what i can tell you is that subaru headliners (at lest in my 96 legacy) are alot like the cover for the rear deck.....and the way i got that out was just kind of prying on it.....i assume you could give that a try.......what are you tryin to get it off for anyway?.......
  14. yeah i bought the one from Harbor Freight only $40...it tells you what the code is and than you look it up in the book it comes with......currently works well for me........
  15. if it was me i personally wouldnt put them on my vehicle....... like everyone else has said "how much quality work went into these things"......good luck though with whatever you try and do......
  16. thanks fellas....i thought it would be normal....it was kind of entertaining to see...i unbolted the shift linkage removed the driveshaft and slowly lowered the trans and it started poaring.......i figured "well to late now"......
  17. i also had something else happen that maybe you could give me some insight on.......when i removed my transmission i forgot to drain it.....so when i pulled out the driveshaft from the transmission i go soaked in a bath of 80-90 gear oil......Is this normal for there to be fluid poaring out of there?......
  18. i have a 96' legacy with 190,000 and i had the same problem and i just did a clutch kit and now my noise is gone..... when i inspected the old release bearing though it seemed fine and so did the pilot bearing...oh well the noise is gone now....
  19. ok got the whole trans and everything back together today......took it for a test drive and the clutch seems like to easy to apply.......i got a new clutch cable for it but have yet to install it.....it was dark i think i hooked the clutch cable up wrong.....to tired now and dark....looks like it will have to wait for tomarrow......the clutch i put it was an EXEDY....it was like $400 but you pay for quality.......keep you all updated on what i find tomarrow with my clutch cable....and thanks again everyone for your wealth of information and assistance....
  20. thanks alot fellas......i believe it is the right part number for the spring.....now i just need to find the part number for that washer......
