  1. speaking of that porc. that happened to me when i was putting my clutch back in the first time i did it.....i accidently tightened the bolt to tight and snap.....i ended up just drilling out the old bolt and putting a longer pinch bolt in with a nut on the end...works just as good......
  2. i wouldnt go with anything but subaru for this.....besides its not that much more than a universal one...i know you said you need the front sensor but i just bought a rear one for my 96 legacy and i think it cost my like $125...
  3. the guys we use at work are called LKQ.....there prices are very reasonable and every engine and trans they sell comes with a 6 month warranty.....i believe they ship all over the country......
  4. yeah it has never happened before as far as i know....i will pick up some marvels mystery oil tomarrow and dump her in the filler neck.....i have around 2000 miles to go till an oil change so im sure over that period it should help things out..........man when i heard that noise i just thought to myself OH GOD NO! i just put another transmission in it like 3 or 4 days ago......you know i bought that car for about 750$ and ive put close to $4000 in parts in it over the past 15 months (not including the $1500 sound system)....thanks to all for your suggestions though......glad it wasnt something more severe......
  5. ok just took it for a little drive and i got home and lifted the hood and the ticking is gone.....i didnt beat the snot out of the car but i did give it a little gas here and there...had it up to about 70 mph.....but now the engine is quiet and smooth again.....could a hydraulic lash adjuster could have stuck for a moment?.....my oil was overfilled a few days ago by a little bit.....but i have done alot of driving and have a few small oil leaks and is now back down to the normal level........this is like way out there but could have my problem been......overfilled oil- oil got airated and deprived lifter for a short time (may got a little air in there)-than oil level went back down to normal level and lifter unstuck? no idea if this is even possible.....
  6. ok.....got home from school today and parked my car.....came out about 1.5 hours later and i get this tapping noise......it almost sounds like extremely loud fuel injectors.......i can rev it a little and it just gets more frequent....i have a 96 legacy L with a 2.2...........PLEASE if anyone has any information about this let me know......things to test? whatever info you have i will take!.....thanks in advance for your time and help.....oh, car is about to turn to 190,000......i love subies my dear lord its been one thing after another for this car........is it safe to drive?..........it doesnt sound at all like a knock more like a constant clicking.....it doesnt seem to go away when warm...i let it idle and waited till the temp gauge on the dash was about half way up and it was still there......i was reading a post a while ago about were someone said you could try cleaning the rocker shafts because there was like a blocked oil passage for the lifter....does anyone know if this is true?......
  7. yes most of those will work.....if you can, just to be sure take the part your looking for to the JY with you....or pics in your cell of them... (at least thats what i do).....headlights,grill etc......
  8. lookin good.. ...i just bought the same exedy clutch kit for my 96.....so far so good......
  9. knock sensor on the 2.2 is on the drivers side under the cyl. #4 intake runner.....only 1 wire goin to it......if you do replace it make sure you torque it to the right spec.....
  10. its got to be so intimidating to talk to someone with so much knowledge of the subaru....im glad you figured out some of your problems with your car though.....
  11. i took a look at some pics and they seemed the same....look the exact same and mounted in same location......thanks legacy777....
  12. ive got a 96 legacy ej22 and the engine still runs like a top.....i believe im the 5th owner and between me and my boss have known all the owners (we both know they drove that suby very hard) i currently have 190,000 on it and i just lost 4th gear (5 spd manual trans) so today i replaced the transmission with one that has around 90,000 on it.....like i said though the engine runs great........if you like the car and feel secure in it.....than i would go ahead and keep it....that is one of the joys i get out of being a mechanic.... is whatever my car needs i do it and i KNOW its done right..... as others have said when it comes to your suby....the trans service and brakes shouldnt take long at all to do........again its all up to you........good luck with whatever you decide to do......
  13. i always wondered what the pressure exchange solenoid did.......thanks for the info aircraftengineer......
  14. I would think it is possible....maybe not likely but electricity does some weird stuff........
  15. i thought at one time i priced a new MAP sensor for my 96' legacy and it came up to like $350 from NAPA.....i could def. see why you would get a used one.....
  16. i would think they would do something like this because the car was vandalized....if they got to the interior they could have popped the hood and poared something into the oil filler neck.......prob. not likely but its a possibility.....
  17. ok....i see.......i have heard that some manufacturers only use the map sensor for diagnostic purposes.....is this what they are referring to...altitude......thanks for clearing that up for me nipper ( i guess the haynes manual is wrong than)
  18. alright guys......ive got a 1996 subaru legacy L EJ22 with a 5 Spd.........i could be mistaken but i thought that the MAP sensor and pressure exchange solenoid only came on the automatics and turbocharged models?.....i have a 5 spd non turbo and i have both of them mounted on the passanger side shock tower........what am i missing here......its the origonal engine and trans so nothing was taken off or swapped or anything...........
  19. i believe my MAP sensor is DENSO......i figure if they can make a MAP sensor right they shouldnt have any problems making a good oil filter.....personally i use the ones we have at work which happen to be NAPA.......
  20. ......thats what ive always done......tap that thing out with a punch.....you usually get a new nut anyways with the new axle.....so if u destroy it no big as long as it comes off......
  21. could always just go to http://www.kingsprings.com might be a little more expensive though... buying direct
  22. just throwing this out there....could it be a defective CTS?......
  23. man.... you and me both brother...i also have a 96 legacy and the drivers side bolt actually fell out on my way to school the other day......i was wondering what the noise was so i threw it in the air and like half of the front crossmember was hanging down....i believe i stripped out that hole.......unfortunately for me i have to replace the trans this weekend and am prob. just going to try to tap the hole to get some good gripping threads.....i dont believe there are nuts on the other end (if were talking about the same crossmember)at least if there are i have never taken them out......i just have the bolt that goes directly into the chassis/body..........
  24. check for a recent thread i started a few days ago....im having the exact same problem.....i have a 96 legacy ej22 with a 5 speed...it has 190,000 on it and i just almost completely lost 4th.....just like your says it started popping out and i had to hold it in now it just grinds.....take a look at my post.......i just bought a used one for like $500 out of a used legacy with about 90,000 miles....even comes with a 6 month warranty....hopefully this weeked i will get it all swapped out.......
