  1. this is a '79 wagon, its a NA car. The first turbo'd Subaru wasn't until '83 and that was an EA81T. So why are you planning on using a restrictive WRX exhaust? Just get some tubing and make your own, thats what I did:D Also, the only bends that go up and down are the stock one that goes into the unibody right in front of the rear axle, right around the torsion bar area. You'll see a hole in the crossmember where it goes through at. Other then that, it follows the trans tunnel all the way back until it moves over, goes through the hole mentioned above and comes out through the muffler. I got pics in my webshots gallery of my Brat with a custom exhaust I did. http://community.webshots.com/user/caboobaroo
  2. ok, timing on these older Subarus is through the bellhousing. If you look in the top of the bellhousing at the back of the engine, you'll notice a hole which you can see the flywheel through. There's supposed to be a large rubber plug over it but sometimes they get lost. Anyways, hook up a timing light and shine it through the hole. You should be able to see the timing marks on the flywheel. If not, with the engine running, take a Scotch Brite pad or some steel wool and press it up to the flywheel to clean it off. I've also had to go back over the timing marks with a white out pen to be able to see them again. Once you can see them, then you'll be able to set the timing correctly.
  3. in the cluster for my '78 Brat, I just went from orange needles to white needles with a blue backround instead of green... I think that might look kinda cool in an '86 cluster..
  4. aircraft stripper will do the trick
  5. check the tranny mounts. Could be a case of them on their way out the door...
  6. I like the nifty little badge under my name... makes me feel important:banana:
  7. for the sake of complicatedness, I would replace the axles, not the tranny stubs.
  8. You want to get them off of a 4wd turbo EA82 car... I guess Caleb didn't see the part about it going onto a Brat:-p
  9. Ahh ok. Well make sure to look for any rust possible. Anywhere from floorboards to fenderwells to the bottom of the fenders and rocker panels. If it has some rust which is fixable, then go for it, especially if it runs!
  10. here's my weapon that I had in my '78... lots-o-powa! http://community.webshots.com/photo/302432023/1302440651067339125OJCEDI
  11. depending on the condition. Now if it has little to no rust, then yes, $400 would be a steal in this area. If it has cancer in the bed, along the wheel wells and more importantly, the shock towers which are part of the fenderwells, then I would walk away from it. Oh, and where is Powell at? I'm here in Laramie...
  12. yes, the knuckle side of all EA82 axles except for the XT6 will fit into each other.
  13. bump... anyone know what I can use if there are stock replacements or if I can use them off of another car like maybe an EA81?
  14. now with a new update... Bodywork is going good, still gotta finish up the tailgate and some on the main body. Hopefully Andrew will be shipping me my fenders for it which are totally shaved. I also have to weld in the sheetmetal over the front bumper holes and make my rear rollpan. Also have to weld in my inserts over where the rear side markers used to be and get my doors stripped unless I get another set, then I'll use those cause mine has a small patch of rust at the bottomr front corners that is all the way through. The hood is perfectly straight and is about to get primered. Also, getting the EA81 torn down and ready for a reseal with new headgaskets and slightly rebuilt heads. Then I have to pull the tranny from the parts car (s/r EA81 4-speed) and get them bolted together with my new 4wd clutch. Slide them right on in and bolt up the driveline. That will happen once I get the main body painted and the new EA81 front suspension/brakes put in. Then I'll be searching for the stuff to do a rear disc brake conversion and well, it just goes on from there. Tomorrow, I'll be hopefully getting some sheetmetal to start on the rear rollpan which will cover up the old rear bumper holes as well. Maybe I can get some pics of her as well if I'm lucky!
  15. oh I need those calipers...
  16. custom lowering job on a '78 Brat - $0 dollars custom exhaust made by me - $10 dollars doing some of the coolest burnouts and have people in Camaros give you funny looks... Priceless
  17. Will, would you like a shovel since you seem to be digging up old threads?:-p
  18. have you checked the injectors with a DVOM to see what kind of resistance they have? How about the electrical connection at all of the injectors to see if you even have power to them. Might sounds kinda stupid but have you checked the fuses for the injectors?
  19. the fact that they are all like Legos as WJM once said. I love the fact that I can take parts off of another Subaru that is totally the wrong car and they fit! Oh and the fact that the headlights turn on and off with the key except my '78 Brat:-\
  20. I'd be all over it as soon as I got my Brat going again. Can't show up to a meet-n-greet in a non Subaru:rolleyes:
  21. Well I took it from a direct quote that SubaruTex used. Sorry I didn't edit it for your liking Brad:-p As far as using Legacy items, yes you can since the only difference between an Impreza and a Legacy is mainy the body.
  22. EA81 struts will fit, however, you'll have to make new mounting tabs on the strut housing in order for it to bolt up correctly to your knuckle. If you do end up converting your front end over to an EA81 setup like i have done in the past, you'll need to make some custom control arms which aren't hard for someone who has a metal lathe. All I had to do was make new stabilizer bars for the EA81 control arms since they were waaaaay too short. Since the original EA81 stabilizer bars were bolted on, I unbolted them and welded the new stabilizer bars on. I made the stabilizer bars the exact same length as the original EA71. For the rear, I don't have a clue:-p
  23. the board member who had made a set of adjustable cam pulleys was All-Talk. He was going to do them for $120 a set plus you had to send him a set of core pulleys as well. I was going to get a set but I never know what happened to them... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29308&highlight=adjustable+cam+pulley
  24. Ding ding ding... we have a winnAr! I did a write-up on a parts list and some tips on how the swap goes, depending on what parts you use. If you have any issues, just shoot me a PM and I can help ya through it:)
