Wheel Bearing Spacer *FIXED*
Numbchux replied to Seahag1978's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got a bearing kit from subaru, a trusted dealer with many members of the local club working there. and it didn't come with the spacer....should it have? -
Starting out on the wrong foot!
Numbchux replied to dmcdlrn's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
mine broke not ten minutes after buying mine... and that sounds like what mine did, was driving along, and noticed that I didn't have any power anymore, I looked at the dash, and the tach said zero. I checked the codes, and it was a code 13, for crank angle sensor. Which made me very worried. Then I realized that it wasn't getting a signal because the disty wans't turning, which was because the belt was broken. anyway, did the tach die when the car did? maybe try pulling it with another car for a little while, let in the clutch, and see if the tach is working or not. That might work better depending on your situation. it's not a surefire way to determine anything, but it'll get you started. -
I've come to the realization that I don't want headlight loops as bad as I thought, and I've already rewired the turn signals into the corner markers, so I don't really care about those mounts. Noah, I like the narrower lower support!! I think I'll adopt that idea. more pics to come late tonight, or tomorrow.

bump I really doubt that it was coming out of the filler cap or dipstick, since it definately didn't get worse (it got better if anything) after adding a quart of oil...but I dunno, maybe I loosened it before I left when I meant to put oil in, and forgot about it...
-
and cost as much as an ARB one ....and still leave the bottom of the radiator unprotected don't get me wrong, it looks awesome, but I want something a little less pricey, and a little more functional, when I get home, I'll PS some d-rings on my 'prototype'
-
;) I still haven't had time to go out and actually look at how it would work on the car, but looking at some of the pics of brad's car, I don't think I'll lose too much clearance. yes, I'd lose some, but it's in the name of protection!

no, I do know I didn't have too much oil....in fact, I know it was low when I left...I know it's oil, definately not power steering fluid...it wasn't a horrible leak, I put my extra quart in it, which brought it up to about half (again, it was low to begin with), and it was barely down to the 'fill' mark on the dipstick by the time I got home (about 1/2 hour drive), the oil appears to be more on the top than the bottom, it got on the electric fan somehow and got sprayed everywhere, which makes me think it came out with some pressure, but that doesn't explain the lack of quantity. and my JBWeld is still holding that valve cover bolt tight! no other signs of head gasket failure (coolant/oil mixing, or smoke) I've been suspecting that it's been missing some...but it's so rare and unpredictable, it might just be my paranoia, and a bump in the road.

help me diagnose this...I was driving my car up to go wheelin, when I stopped at a rest-stop to use the restroom. When I got back to the car, my girlfriend informed me that the car was smoking a bit... so I pop the hood, and find oil splattered all over the engine, appears to be coming from the passenger side front of the engine. I'm suspecting cam seal, but I'm not sure. Drivers side t-belt is fine, so I've ruled out main seal, and any oil pump seals. but it got all over the passenger side t belt, and splattered up and down, and blew back all over everything all the way back to the firewall, so It's hard to tell. A nice man came over and offered me a hand, we talked for a minute, and he was sure it was head gasket. how can I be sure?

Engine Reattachment? (pic)
Numbchux replied to DirtyMech's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes, I can help! when I did the clutch on my car, the alignment tool that came with the kit would not fit in the pilot bearing, fit in the clutch plate just fine, but was WAY too big for the bearing. anyway, I searched around, and found this: do not tighten the pressure plate to the flywheel, just thread the 6 bolts on a few turns, that way the clutch plate can move freely around, then, tighten the bolts through the starter hole. you'll need a friend for this part: put the tranny in gear, and make sure the clutch pedal is released (the clutch will engage with the engine and tranny bolted together tight). Then set one front wheel on a block or something, so it can't move, and have you're friend rotate the other wheel, slowly. While they're doing this, watch the hole, and count the bolts as they go by. this is where it get's a bit tricky, but only mentally since you need to tighten the bolts in a star pattern, you need to count them, you can't just tighten each one as it goes by. tighten one, then count the third, tighten it, then the second, tighten, then the third again....etc. 3-2-3-2-3-2, there are 6 bolts, I would recommend tightening each one twice, so you need to count 12...then I would recommend going one full turn, checking each one, to make sure you didn't count wrong, and tighten the same 2 bolts 12 times... I hope that helps! -
firstwagon...I like that idea, looks sweet! I've found that protection for the headlights isn't as necessary as I thought, as long as the bumper sticks out beyond them, they're pretty safe. this keeps it open, to allow lots of air into the rad. and the bottome bar could be used to mount a skidplate to...making both stronger. Jerry...you could put a 2" receiver in there, and make a plate that fits in there for it. I've thought about this, but don't want the winch out there all the time, makes for a huge bumper! anyone else have ideas

I'm sure he'll chime in later.... GravelRX did this with his '87. he's since taken off the body kit too, but here are a couple pics of it with the kit, and without the wing: I think it looks sweet, but then again, it's part of what makes an RX, an RX...it's up to you.

OK, I sent this to shadyirishmen, so I could maybe get AA to make one up for me, but I thought I'd submit it to the masses for any other ideas/improvements. so I took the pic of subaruloverbrad's 6" lifted wagon he was selling, and used that bumper as a basis for the design: then took his fog light out, closed up the gap between the bumper and grill/headlights, added my combo fog/driving lights, moved the license plate tabs (so they don't interfere with the lights), and a couple other things: then hacked it onto a pic of my car: now, it won't look quite like that, since AA is going to tube bumpers now, that's why I rounded the corners on the bottom, I figure they'd want to use one piece across the bottom, and just bend the ends up. the fog lights would be set back far enough so they would be behind that bottom crossbar, which would protect them from pretty much anything. and I tried to add them, and you can almost see them, what would be tow hooks, mounted on the inside of the vertical pieces. actual hooks, like the ones bolted onto some jeep bumpers...these would be real nice, since I hate using clevis' when I'm using looped straps. and a pic with angry eyelids, to counteract the happy smile made by the bumper:

Thanks tex!!! That'd be a big help! thanks scoobywagon too. That's virtually what I was thinking, but you had some other good ideas I can use. I'm actually thinking of mounting it so it doesn't move, maybe even cut a piece of the dash above the glovebox out, and hinge it up, and mount the radio behind that, I dunno, one of these days I'll get under there and look at it, right after I put the seats in....(tex, I understand the hectic life! don't sweat it) -

w00t!! finally..some information I can use! Thanks! sorry, but I've already decided what I want to do, I don't want to buy an alarm (I can't even afford to replace the deck...yet), I'm not rigging anything to go off when you touch the car, or a motion light...I don't want an animal to be able to set it off. I'm not using booby traps of any kind, I want this to be something that deters them before any damage is done. if there are razor blades on the back of my deck, my dash still would've been destroyed... OK...unless someone knows exactly what color, or what connector the dome light wire is in the a-pillar, I'm just interested in ideas for mounting the deck in my glovebox. I haven't had time to get in there and taken anything apart yet, so I just want some info from someone who's been in there recently, or (preferrably) someone who's done this. I don't mean to sound rude, and I DO appreciate the ideas, but I've thought of some variation of virtually everything mentioned so far, and ruled it out. Thanks! -

That too... problem with just a motion sensor...I have one on the back of the house, and it's on ALL the time, there are so many squirrels, rabbits, and a skunk, that they set it off all the time. -

it had a detachable face, they just dug through my stuff to find the face...I think a nice clean black dash, with a little electrical connector, and cd slot is just as obvious nowadays as a nice radio I've though about the recessed deck thing, but the whole isn't deep enough anyway, the adapter already sticks out an inch or so to keep the radio from hitting the vents in the back (which I'm not cutting into) I've thought about a number of differnent booby traps...but I want them to get the hint before they start ripping into the car, that's the biggest bummer here, the damage they did to my dash/wiring (well, and the cd). I like the flood lights wired to the dome light best, since I live on a hill overlooking Lake Superior, ALL of the houses above me have huge picture windows facing towards my house, if those lights went on, it would get someones attention, chances are, if there was someone in my car, they'd get noticed...now! I also want to leave the gaping hole in the dash, maybe even the hole where they ripped one of my toggle switches out (I don't really need it, I've deiceded to use DPDT instead of 2 SPDT). that way the car looks less appealing in the first place. -
so some jack....rabbit....stole my CDdeck (with a brand-new CD, that I don't have ripped to computer ), and did it by ripping it out of the dash. SO, I wanna do 2 things 1) hide the replacement deck...when I can afford one...I'm thinking in the glovebox somehow...any ideas? anyone done something like this? 2) wire some floodlights on my parking area to my dome light, with a little wiring harness in the grill or something (like a block heater). so if that harness is plugged in, and the doors are opened, the lights come on...my dad suggested putting a motion sensor in the car, but this would be a bit easier..I think. Question is: Anyone know where the wire for the switched dome lights, preferrably down under the dash somewhere. so I can tap into this, and send the power to a relay outside the car somehow...any ideas on this? I'm really p/o'd about this, and I wanna try to make sure this doesn't happen again. I also like the idea of leaving the car open, and using other methods to keep people out/away, so they don't have to break a window to realize they don't want anything out of my car! Any other ideas?
