I'm new, What Subaru should I buy for offroading? Basic conversion Q's
Numbchux replied to BlueRidgeSE's topic in Off Road
That may be true, but my EA82 generates more than enough heat for me, I only have fan settings 3 & 4, and I'm finding myself turning it on and off all the time because it's too hot (new said -15 w/windchill this morning) -

well...there used to be a sticky with stuff like this, but I'm not sure what happened to it... anyway, you have to analyze you're needs here: The EA8x Dual Range 4WD is by far the best subie tranny fo offroad, unfortunately, the motors bolted up to these trannies are, well, a bit lacking in the hp department. I think an EA82 SPFI motor is rated at 91 hp at the crank... The EJ series (legacy, impreza, etc.) has WAY more power, but no lo range, and AWD, instead of true 4WD, which is a big disadvantage off road. the newer, EJ series car's are much more expensive, but will be way better for road trips, but not as capable off-road... all that being said, I'd recommend an '88 GL wagon (ok, I'm a bit biased...but I've had an '85, and '92). With an SPFI (best lo end torque of any EA8x motor), and a 5-speed, D/R 4WD tranny. Then add a 4" lift kit (presonally biased towards allied armament...but there's also SJR and BYB that are both also great), 14 or 15" wheels (pugeot or AA, or 6-lug conversion), ~28" All terrains, LSD or welded rear, skidplate, bumpers, maybe a roof rack, etc......make it yours.....then, down the road, add an EJ motor to give it the power of the newer cars....This is the path I'm taking anyway... Others will argue that the EA81 platform is better, frankly, I'm not sure, I've never had one. The brat's are cool, the hatch's are the perfect size, and the motors are a bit more reliable (timing chains, instead of belts). However, they're essentially all carb'ed, and only a 4-speed tranny...not for me...but if you go that route, the rest of the upgrades are pretty much the same, plus a weber carb for better power. These are all rather common upgrades, you just have to look around, in the marketplace, and here, in the offroad forum, for info. Also, the search function can yeild many answers... Good luck with your build -
1991 Loyale Belt Pulley System
Numbchux replied to openback's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What belt is it? the timing belt, or the A/C belt? either way, it's probably the tensioner, if it was the timing idler, it would've torn the timing belt instantly....trust me -

Also....check out DrKrazy's post on 'Project Cheap' He's put pretty much everything he's done in that post, plenty of info on how to make a nice rig out of any EA82... -
virtually every statute/law in minnesota... http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/stats/169/ so...is mine a station wagon, or a muli-purpose 4wd vehicle??

I'm also still interested in a pic of the swing gate with a tire on it -
agreed....the hubs/wheels/lugs are not the weak point in this system

it rained like 8" here today

looks awesome!! DR...it does have some camber, but that's pretty close to stock, mine and morgan's (former) BYB lifted wagon both look like that also, it looks like he's probably got front adjustable struts cranked up too...look at those control arms!!

Timing Belt kits for EA82Ts?
Numbchux replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just had an idler seize on me...I put one on from the parts engine...but I need a new kit....only 2 available now -
yea, you could probably make a little gearbox of somesort...problem is, it would probably take some trial and error to get the gears just right, and with each new gear set, the box will have to be modified as the input/output shafts will probably have to be relocated... I don't want to discourage you...I think it's awesome!! but just make sure that if/when you/somebody does it....they document it VERY well!!!
-
I know people have had the boxes apart before, and I beleive the problem is that, just like putting 4.44 gears in an L-series tranny case, the mesh isn't right, the newer, EJ-series AWD boxes have a different front diff mesh than the L-series ones, and the same goes for the speedo gear. fyi, it would need to be a smaller speedo gear, to speed up the cable/gauge

do you have a 'my gallery' link on the left side? sometimes...for unknown reasons, the image gallery decides that I'm logged off, but not the rest of the site. It mostly doesn't work if I'm on a cumputer where I don't click 'log me in automatically'.... oh yea, and great shots!!!
-
Really?? I guess I've just been lucky then I stand corrected!! thanks!
-
the 4-cyl XT's have the same alt the 6-cyl ones have a better one, but it requires some modification to make it work...doa search for info on that
-
I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but you multiply the miles to compensate for the tires, than divide by the gallons...mine's about 20% (same as speedo, so if you barrow a GPS, or match speed with another car at 50, you can figure it out that way), and that get's me about 20 mpg @ 75 mph, 24 @ 60, and 22 city...

Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
Numbchux replied to DrKrazy's topic in Members Rides
I have done the clutch on mine...but did you do it on a lifted subaru?? I couldn't beleive how much easier it was to do!! I actually got most of it done with the tranny up in the air, just pulled back out of the way...then I got the idea to swap in the lower mileage tranny sitting just inside the garage...anyway, I only needed help getting the tranny back up in the air, the rest, I did by myself....first time! oh yea, and I had my dad spin the wheel while I tightened the pressure plate bolts through the starter hole, but my mother could've done that! anyway....glad you're making progress, I expect to see some off-road pics soon!! -

pulling the engine to do a clutch?? wow, I can understand doing it on an unlifted rig...but on a lifted one, you don't even need to jack up the car....maybe I did it the hard way -

Numbchux replied to DrKrazy's topic in Members Rides
Yea, my camber looked pretty crazy when I first put the lift on, but after a couple trips up to duluth (~300 miles one way), it settled out some...it still looks kind of crazy, but not too bad, and handles just fine (well, as good as can be expected with no sway bar...) -
Most of my friends love it! some of them have an old D/R Subaru next on their wishlist!! but when I take it out on the trails, and do better than the jeeps with way more money into 'em...they're usually threatened, and have some pretty negative things to say .....whatever, I know it's because they're insecure about their heeps
