I've been watching out for an EA82T rolling chasis for cheap to swap an EJ22 into and I came accross a 2WD GL Turbo Wagon (86). My question is: Does the 2WD EA82T use a 25-spline axle? (like the FT-4WD & EJ AWD Tranny?) If it does, will this mean that I can use an EJ22 FWD Transmission for an EJ swap? (I would like to avoid using an adaptor plate if possible.) I called the owner of the FWD Wagon and he said it was pretty much ready to roll w/ no engine in it. I was banking on going the EJ AWD tranny route; but now I'm thinking maybe I can do it w/ the 2WD Tranny . . . Thanks for hearing me out, -Noah

I didn't mean that you need to go to Missoula for the work! Just source a local radiator shop in Helena.
-
Both EA81 Subies I have owned had cooling system issues that were solved by removing the radiator and taking it to Reynold's Radiators (in Missoula) to have them ROD out, patch it up, and straighten finns on the original radiators. I spent ~$65 on each & it worked like magic.

Turbo brat tranny/engine swap?
MSSLGECKO replied to csiprun's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm a big fan of the EA81T with an EA82 5SPD D/R transmission. I have exhaust all the way back w/ 2.5" Exhaust Pipe and 27" Tires. The wagon kicks up a serious roar and is a blast! OVERHEATING is definately an issue depending on the actual maintaince record of the the car. Preventitive measures are the way to go; a local radiator shop roded and straightened the Rad. for me @ under $100 & old hoses should probably be replaced. The EA81T cars have great features, least of all the 3AT. Because it's an auto, when you swap to an MT, you must use a standard EA81 tranny x-member & it's associated attachment plates mounted to the unibody (which hold the L&R Leading Rods). SIDENOTE: Is there a different turbo engine that is a PUSHROD engine? -
Quick Question RE: EA81T
MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's great, I'll give it a shot! Is there a good source for EA81 Exhaust Manif. Flanges? - Or am I better off w/ a Saw and a J/Y '81 Manifold? -
So, I've had my EA81T Wagon garaged since last september & when I scoped it out a few weeks ago I discovered that one of the exhaust flanges is broken so the exhaust manifold is not flush. I am going to fix it by having a welder cut off the broken flange & weld a good one on. The question here is, where can I get a new flange in a hurry (IS THE EA81T FLANGE THE SAME AS THE EA81?) Thanks!

1984 Ea81T I found in the j/y
MSSLGECKO replied to Prospeeder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's doubtful, but if there is an y-pipe/up-pipe in it, I *might* be interested. . . . PM me if it's the case. -

Get the URL for the image. (I click on the image and select show pic. in new window, then grab the address that way) Once you have the URL, there is a button above the text box in the New Post page, it asks you for the URL at that point and you paste the address. It will look like this: -

Broken EA82T Wagon; Should I Buy it?
MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There are features like LSD, Rear Disk Brakes, 25 Spline Count, & an MPFI Fuel Pump that cater well to EJ22 swaps. -
Broken EA82T Wagon; Should I Buy it?
MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nice, that's good to know. I checked out this guy's Sube a ways out of town. Scoped it: standard EA82 Wagon 3AT + mouse & mouse nest in engine bay. Anyways, he didn't know itwas non-turbo until I told him it was NA. I also told him that if the engine IS the issue, he could probably source a replacement and gave him a phone number for a parts guy. I asked about the Legacy engine he had mentioned, asked to contact the friend/owner, who then told me that I could take it for nothing if I like. So, I'll check it out after the weekend probably. No tranny according to him; body looked shot. Now I still want an EA82T to swap an EJ22 into... P.S. The EA82 Wagon I looked at had the NICEST stock headlight housings I have seen on an old Sube. -
Broken EA82T Wagon; Should I Buy it?
MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As of now, what I am thinking is, if the car appears drivable (minus the engine), I most likely will purchase it and the EJ22 for cheap or not at all. If the Wagon has an LSD and other goodies, I just might get it to part it if there is no decent engine for it. I think I shall pass on it if the seller wants too much for the Wagon and EJ. Sidenote: Can anyone tell me how much it typically costs to dispose of a junk'ed/parted car? (Not trying to scare enthusiasts, just thinking ahead . . . ) -

MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's too far for me. And I'm looking at this for an EJ swap, so a good engine would just complicate things. I was just hoping that it would be possible to do the swap w/out sourcing an EJ 5SPD in addition. So, with regard to the rear axles, how do I make that work w/ a 5SPD? Does it fit no problem? -

MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, that's what I thought. I just asked because I was reading some old posts and someone made the analagy that the 4EAT was like the EJ 4EAT w/ a diff. bellhousing. There isn't the possibility that this car has a rear limited slip or center locking diff., is there? -
Broken EA82T Wagon; Should I Buy it?
MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If this has the 4EAT, would there be a way to mate it to an EJ22? Or would an EJ tranny/Adapter be the only option in an '88? -
There's a local guy here w/ an EA82T AWD Wagon. He said he bought it from a familly member w/ a dead engine and wanted to put in an engine that is 2 years older, but could not. How hard is it to swap N/A engines into turbo cars? Can anyone estimate the value of this car if i swapped the engine, cleaned the interior, straight body, and A/T AWD? (supposing everything else is in working condition)? I am considering offering a lowball price if I like what I see, then fixing up the car and either using it for a short period of time, or selling it. Let me know what you think; I know it's hard to come out making money w/ these cars, but I think I can get a really great price. I'll prob. check it out tomorrow for more information. Thanks, -Noah

Yo, all you really need to do is jack 1 (or both) front wheel(s). Then remove the wheel(s) and front axle(s). You then disassemble the front axle(s) (possibly using bad CV's that have low $ value). You want the outer cup off of the axle. Remove the outter boot, use a screwdriver(IIRC) to pry the ball bearings out then the inner race (IIRC that's the metal deal in the center that holds the ball bearings in place. Then you have an empty and disconnected outer axle cup. Reinstall this outer cup into the wheel hub. Bam you're ready to do your first RWD Lo Range Burn out (using 4WD). And if you don't have a D/R transmission, then you just wasted everyone's time (because it won't be much fun IMO). Cheers! PS - There is no need to close up the tranny where the axles connect because it is already contained. - Also, DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY SHIFT INTO FWD WHEN MOVING IN RWD(4WD), Your tranny will not take kindly to it. However, you can throw the transmission between Hi and Lo 4WD ranges (as if it's another gear using the clutch), which is in fact the funnest part of the RWD configuration! Good luck, have fun, and be safe!

Recommended fuel filter change??
MSSLGECKO replied to Petersubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Agreed. It's an easy and cheap job to do yourself. It's easily diagnosed on the fly. And having a spare will save you a lot of trouble; I've never thought to carry a spare of the fuel filter, but I will from now on! -
New offroad light's, What do ya think?
MSSLGECKO replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Looks nice. Let's see it in action Off Road! -
Just get the ball seat adaptor offered online (cheap) and use your original lugs. It works fine.

Is it an RX with RWD?
MSSLGECKO replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As with almost all old-gen Subarus, RX's are always cool, in AWD, RWD, 4WD, Turbo, N/A, etc. It's the quality of the product and the versitility of their designs that make a Subaru so wonderful. If up-ing the HP +55 is wrong, I don't want to be right. The only thing that I would be opposed to is making an AWD RX a FWD. That would get me, but that's about it. RWD Subarus are real fun - my brat was a blast & drove very nicer in a RWD configuration than stock FWD. -

Yes, an EA81T will bolt to a 4SPD D/R. Folks on the board who have done swaps generally advise that swapping an EA81T is more hassle than it's worth (to them). The 3AT is lame, my EA81T wagon has a 5SPD D/R and it's way better. Good luck

Would 185/80/R13 fit my EA81 Wagon
MSSLGECKO replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I bet the T-Wagon will handle it (3AT ?). My '83 T-Wagon w/ 27"s on it can hold gears at alititude except when climbing steep grades (w/5SPD).
