  1. Use the old doors and cut/weld them into 1/2 doors! (Then lock the auto tranny into true 4WD of course!) here's a write-up on custom half doors: Custom [Toyota] Half Doors
  2. Alrighty, first things first: Any subaru (even 2WD models) will get you up the mountain. There are a few models to consider: Brat, Wagon, Hatch, Sedan, & Coupe. I prefer the wagon to carry cargo and people (a roof rack is nice). Then you can consider EA81 vs. EA82: the later will probably be easier to implant an EJ engine into but either model would work. EA82 has a few more options like a 5th gear on the D/R tranny (with Hi/Lo). EA82 also has AWD in some models and more common turbo charged engines. That being said, I have a blast in my EA81 wagon w/ an EA82 5-SPD and lift. Anyways, whatever you choose will work fine I'm sure especially if you have snow tires. Even w/out a 4WD Sube will do well; my cars have done great in the snow even w/ dead tires on. Good luck.
  3. Do it. Make sure that you have a tranny w/ Lo range so you can keep your turbo spooled while moving slowly. As for the sealed turbo fluid reservoir, I had to remove my windshield wipers to make it fit; talk about a design flaw! Also, it helps to have decals:
  4. That's such a sweet brat! Good job and good pic.s Got any more detailed pic.s of that swing arm? It's really nice!
  5. Thanks for the quick response. I blew and axle driving around town yesterday but the good 'ol Sube won't be stopped by 1 front axle breaking
  6. I tried to search around for this answer but it's a quick question, so whoever knows - hook me up w/ the right info! Q: Is the EA81 front axle the correct one to use for 5SPD D/R swap into an EA81?
  7. I think these units sound pretty sweet. Any progress on the development? How hard will wiring one of these suckers in be? You're planing to write up instructions for it too, right?
  8. I want to do the same thing as you. Here's what I found: (courtesy of RenaissanceMan) http://ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48275
  9. Yeah, the wagon is BACK! And yeah, AT's are a pain, but I'll still try it as long as i have a way to pull the rig out. I've been pondering some super swampers and I might do it this summer if I can get some other 14's for them. P.S. I'm currently planning on spending the summer in Missoula, so I won't be around too much after a while.
  10. Good job Andrew! Can I come 'roadin' with you two?
  11. Damn Andrew! You beat me to the draw - I guess I should have thought of it first. Nice work getting some local representation!
  12. Judging by the picture, you might want to re-think your tires, these ones look pretty low quality! Good buy, are you going to weld up the rear diff. to let these suckers bite as hard as they can?
  13. EA81T was offered in the Wagon, Brat, and Coupe in the US. RXI's were setup w/ EA81's sporting dual carbs. The EA82 RX is an RXII and is the only RX the US ever saw.
  14. This is good stuff! Why is the 79 DL 4SPD listed as 3.889F/3.900R on this spec sheet?
  15. Andrew, Nice Job! Good footage, good editing. I'm sure the final DVD will come out great. I'll get my wagon going again this spring and then we can get all 3 Bozeman lifted EA's rollin' together.
  16. That's an RXI. The US only got the RXII (EA82). You can see it says RXI on it behind the door. That's a sick car, but it's one of the few Subarus that I would not put a plow on, but that's just me. Now a Brat w/ a plow would be great and would look super funny parked next to a real plow truck!
  17. It happens real quick - I was casually watching t.v. and it came on for a split second. I jumped, then cooled it cause my friends thought I was crazy. Then I went and checked it out on a computer. Kinda hard to catch.
  18. I'm not usually into posting on the board about sube's in movies, etc., but I was watching an old episode of the Simpsons and saw a Gen I Brat covered in snow. It's pretty sweet that the simpsons thought the Brats are cool enough to be on the show! I tried to get a freeze frame of the Brat but it didn't work, oh well. It's in Episode 201 - Bart Gets an F
  19. Do it! This is some good info for reference of EA turbo heads! Does anyone know much about the design differences between the n/a EA81s & '2s?
  20. Since the tranny mounts have different orientation. Brian, I need to solve this issue myself, if you find a good solution, give me a hollar.
  21. Repost (CL/Ebay Forum) Cool machine, you should buy it for sure.
  22. I was running this setup in my '83 Brat w/ 4SPD D/R and it was AWESOME. RWD drives waay nicer. Anyhow, yes your tranny can take it just fine as long as you are very careful that you never shift into 2WD when movingm, or else! I constructed a plastic trim piece that stopped the lever from entering the 2WD selection. I was doing a lot of shifting between 4Hi and 4Lo and didn't want to take up shifting time by being careful not to select 2WD. You can get some sweet slides dropping into and out of Lo. Good luck, have fun, and wear your seatbelt!
  23. That's a dream brat for sure. I'll bet it is a little faster than most care to handle on public roads
  24. I like the 4/3 lift. First off, you do have a 4SPD dual range transmission, right? Alright, good: I put 27"s on my EA81 w/a 4/3 lift and had to trim the front fenders infront and behind the wheel a little bit so if you want 27's and not much trimming, go with 4" in the front.
  25. Brian - do you have a T-Coupe up your sleeve?
