I agree! I have never been fond of the FWD EA cars' handling in spirited driving. I've found that my Brat handles way nicer in RWD and seemingly more stable, plus the added bonus of having the Dual Range transmission which takes shifting to new extremes. After a short time w/ the RWD setup, I had to make a little trim piece to prevent the 4WD shifter from accidentally dropping into the 2WD/FWD position; once that was in place, I could throw the shifter between Hi and Lo quickly shooting through the neutral position rapidly.

Some days you just can't sneak anything by me. -
General Disorder posted and linked to his writeup on the topic; however, it is for EA81 (and it looks like you're working on an EA82 Loyale.) Here is the link anyhow (it probably doesn't do you much good, may give you some ideas . . .) : GD: Thanks again for your writeups!

Yup. But it is a fun rally car from what I hear 'round here. A 4WD EA81's w/ Lo range are cheap and easy to come by. They also come stock with struts that can be adjusted up for a little more clearance and fit bigger tires. The engine is more powerful to boot.

You found it! Most people here are offroading different models than Justies, but I'm sure you can get some good info. First and foremost, be specific w/ your questions (what do you want to do w/ your car? --> Mudding, Rallying, Rock Crawling, etc.)

? You meant 4WD[izzle], right? Otherwise you're gonna have to get mod'ed Brat or a silly Baja to get your AWD. -
My [EA81] Temp. Guage lost its Composure

Thanks, I'll test it out. -
The paintjob turned out great; it will look better mounted and churning up mud! It looks like Zap is right about the outer edge.

215, eh? I definately want something a little bigger than stock diameter. What sort of tread would do well on the road for dd'ing but rally well too?

Howdy All, I am getting some 15" wheels soon and need to start thinking about tires for them. . . The car is stock and I like to drive it year round in FWD, RWD, and 4WD. I don't want all seasons - I'd rather be good on dry pavement and o.k. on dirt/snow or vice-versa. I also want to minimize expense. Can anyone here point me in the right direction? Any good recommendations? Should I think about used tires or not? Thanks for reading my generic post.

I got the right part from the dealership for ~$18 and installed it. Thanks for the help ID'ing the part! General - I'm impressed by how thorough your write-up is. Do you have any more awesome documents to share? -
rwd is it hard on the transfr case

It's all about low range rwd and a front handbrake (an lsd would make for ultimate burnouts) -

Thanks GD! That's a great write-up w/ pics, and explains to me why the '84 cable that I saw in the napa database looked a little off. I think the (incorrect) cable I got at napa was ~$25, do you know off hand what the OEM part costs? -

Thanks, I'll check it out at the stealership! -
I'm having trouble finding the correct replacement for my old clutch cable. The reason that I don't know the part # I need is that my car was originally a 3SPD and had the '87(?) D/R when I got it. If someone knows EA clutch cables, I could use your expertise . . . I think that it may be an EA81 model cable, but seem irregularly long. . The part that I'm looking for has the pedal end (left side of pic) designed to be held not by bolts, but rather by a metal band that is held by one screw and sits over the cable. If someone can identify the specific model this is from or the part numer, that would really help me out! I think the overall length is ~35" (Napa had similar ones in the comp. that were like 10"s too short. . .)

Looks like a solid day of 4Xing. Thanks for taking and sharing photos, but these are entirely too large for display in this forum IMHO.

I've been in need of some lug nuts for a while if there are any extra sets around . . .

Collect a full set and have them widened (and reinforced)!

I think that's some damn good advice about owning an off-roading vehicle. I picked up my Brat when my Wagon's front end was in a few pieces out of need for a DD. (I think these guys were saying the Auto is better for the Center locking mod' . .) It seems like if you really want a manual AWD, you should set the vehicle up for some more rally style driving & performance. And possibly a stiffer and higher ride (Outback/Forester setup . .), then a rear LSD would be a nice accent. This would allow for a more easilly street-able daily driver.
-
What's it gonna take for you to build up my brat like that for me? (If I was wealthy I would totally be throwing money at you!) That's the sweetest street brat in N.America for certain. Great job, keep up the good work, and for the love of god - give me your car!
-
I'd say you should start off with 14 or 15 inch wheels and large-ish aggressive tires. And possibly weld up the rear diff.

So, my parents are looking at getting a new second car in addition to their '01 OBW. Of recent, the car [~100K miles] has been having a couple of minor electrical mishaps and a head gasket replacement. This OBW has made my parents a little wary of getting another subaru although they like the gas mileage and the AWD. As I understand it the 2.5L that in the '01 is known to have headgasket issues. Is this a problem that has since been worked out? Are there any current engines to watch out for?
