1983.5-1984 was the production run in the US of the EA81T. You got the model list right as far as I know. I wouldn't be extremely surprised to hear of an option in hatches or sedans possibly outside of the States. As for the auto-tranny, I guess they figured that it was either a luxury item or we couldn't handle the raw power. My EA81T works great with an EA82 5SPD D/R and I suspect that if it had the EA81 4SPD D/R it would be pretty good too. I think they can handle the power just fine. It's interesting to note that the Subaru RX I was an EA81T Coupe w/ a 4SPD D/R FT4WD gearbox with a center-locking differential and a rear limited slip. Now that's the car I really want and dream about. This car wasn't produced in the US. As for how cool EA81T's are, they are: Very Awesome. Get one.

Beautiful depiction! I would expect that you could identify someone locally who would and could build something like that custom for you. It would be sweet looking.

An idea to sharpen up gen 1 brats
MSSLGECKO replied to 75subie's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I am curious what the Brat looks like as a whole. The close up looks good, but I can't guage what I'd think of it in person based on that photo. I think this is a pretty decent idea. -
My brat's hood will not release by use of the cable. I have to remove the grill and stick an 8mm wrench in and get it to release.] How do I go about replacing the cable or should I just adjust it in some way?

Not a bad idea, but I think that one would be better off building a rack and frame w/out a topper. I'm sure we've all seen trucks (especially work trucks) w/ a frame coming off the bed and sometimes going above the cab w/ a flat surface for a rack the whole way. They look cool and make it easy to carry tons of equipment.

Building the RX? RX Masters Please Post Here!
MSSLGECKO replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's fair enough, I guess that we have the same feelings regarding an EJ in your car. Good luck, it's fun to see what you guys come up w/ your EA82T's, I'd like to mod' up my EA81T but can't right now. -

Just one question: When will I get to see one of y'all w/ an EJ22 turbo or something along those lines in their RX Coupe?!? Man that thing would fly. Sorry to get off topic, but I couldn't resist. (We have the technology) -
Alternators w/ different pully's
MSSLGECKO replied to patkennedy78's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Install it as is and you'll be good to go. You can swap pullies if you feel like it; I didn't when I put a new old one in. -
I would say set your Forester up for offroading - they look super cool lifted. You probably could spend substantailly less than getting a new Jeep and have a lift, tires, snorkel, and a 5 SPD D/R transmission from an EA82 car. And that would be awesome. As for Xterra's - I would stay away from those, but that's just me. My friend had a early model of it and I was unimpressed by the quality of the vehicle. It's fine for on- and off-road driving and I don't know much about serious offroading w/ Xterras.

Audi locking diff.? Never heard of it - what's it out of? Sounds interesting.
-
I dislike the jerky braking that ABS renders and feel a loss of overall control of a vehicle when it is actively engaging ABS. I have no idea what it's like for offroading, but since it's mostly at low-speeds anyhow, I suppose that most of the time it's pretty legit and non-intrusive. On second thought . . . . who uses brakes offroading anyways?

noob question about boxer sound
MSSLGECKO replied to nkx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's because we (subaru drivers) are super cool. -
I thought there was a way that you could disengage an axle w/out fully removing it (?). So, no 3WD drifting on pavement. Damnit.
-
I'm really wanting to put a welded rear diff. in my wagon and have a few questions before I do it: 1. I have read some brief descriptions of how to disengage a rear axle for on-road driving, but it is still unclear to me how you do this. Any help? 2. 3WD(?) Obviously w/ a disengaged axle, in 4Hi&Lo I will be in 3WD; so it warrants a few questions - For light offroading, is it decent? I frequently like to pull off the road when I see mud/dirt/ruts/anything and pop into 4WD, will I be able to move myself around decently? Is it possible to run in 3WD on pavement? Thanks guys. I'm excited to have a locked diff. and see what it can do!

Wicked cool, my man.

Sounds like my wagon on the highway It's a good thing that it's well worth the wad of cash it takes to drive everyday, eh?
-
Hey! Nice Wagon! I think the board has been seeing way more new EA82 lifts and '81s and it's awesome to see a 'new' sweet EA81 lifted rig! Also, your snorkel looks good - I like the black on red and snow-cammo always looks cool. Question: What exactly is going on w/ your stereo/switch consol. Did you make the red trim out of fiberglass? (You have more switches than me )

A thread about on-board compressed air systems got me thinking about this. I would like to have an on-board system on my off-roader; if I had a setup in my car, I would like to try this: Route a line from the holding tank into the exhaust manifold near the collector. Using a remote-activated valve, pressurized air would be introduced into the manifold and thus spool the turbo. What are the thoughts/comments on this? I can't see why it wouldn't be really cool. It would be nice for off-roading at low rpms w/ a turbo.
-
Of all the fun things you could do with an on-board air system, my buddy and I came up with our grandest scheme yet. On a turbo engine, one could route a hose to the exhaust manifold into the collector just before the turbo, this could be used to spool the turbo at low RPMs for short bursts. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the link - did anyone see the prices listed on that webpage? I don't think I read them correctly. . . .
-
Those are sweet and I want them. Any chance of finding a source for them? Tires such as these ones are the only way that I'm ever going to be satisfied with 13" wheels.
-
I personally don't want to use an inverter to fill 4 tires/use tools when you could use an air pump (Subaru brand, our favorite) and a system of valves and a tank. I did a quick search and came up w/ this result (just a quick one not the best one) In it, they describe their setup using a pump and an aluminum diving tank that is modified for this application. Link I don't have any experience w/ compressed air systems, so I personally have a good amount of reading to do before I start putting a system together. I like the idea of using a diving tank and mounting it on the roof rack - maybe dual tanks would look cool. (Gotta look cool, right?)
-
I can't answer your question, but I think that it is important to consider capacity an on-board air system is designed to hold. So, maybe someone could give a figure for say filling all 4 tires or an estimate (larger radius tires preferably, or any other measure such as running airtools continuously) - What is the requirment for a holding tank to have enough volume for these sort of activites(?) Then we could determine if a bumper system would be very effective - maybe you could find a holding tank that you could install somewhere on the car(?) I'm interested as well, it would be pretty cool to have.

"Closed ratio&Dual range Transmission" "Limited Slip Differential Gear" D/R & LSD http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/projectrudy/sheet5a.jpg I would like to get a EA81T Coupe to put a D/R FT4WD transmission in it.

It is awesome to have an EA82 5SPD in my EA81T wagon. I can't say for a Carb'd EA81. Willis- you mean an EA82 4WD 5SPD, not an EA81, right? (The only EA81 5SPD I am aware of is 2WD.) There isn't much fab. work to install the trasmission into a 4WD EA81. The only thing that doesn't fit is the transmission crossmember. I'm shortening the width of the 5SPD x-member to fit the EA81 body currently to replace the x-member I broke on my wagon. P.S. A dyno chart would be nice to have, but I wouldn't say it's worth $ (this sounds free to me )
