<<The temp gauge in my Dad's 95 Legacy is starting to spike intermittently. It will go into the H and then settle back down then spike and settle back down. I'm thinking faulty thermostat...any idears?>> i think if you keep letting it go to H, your going to need a new engine. have you had any work done to it recently?

<<Hi, all. I've been searching the posts but need a little more help. I have a '92 Legacy 2.2L that has recently decided not to start whenever it wants. Lights come on but engine won't crank and lights dim with the effort. Recently had new starter installed and I don't hear any clicking. 5 minutes later, starts right up, no problem. Any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks, as always.>> does this happen only when you have driven the car for any amount of time?

<<We haven't removed it; we are wondering whether we can just realign the belt at this point or should we go ahead & replace it? FYI, it's never been replaced & the car has 120k miles. . .>> replace the timing belt with a subaru one, its time for one, don't skimp on the belt. you'll get a 105,000 mile one that will fit your application. check the pulley, idlers for bearing noise. replace if needed.

<<How easy is it to get the backpanels out of the car? And then to remove that window??>> the quarter panel has to be cut out because it is welded in from the factory. i don't know but it sounds like alot of work and $$$$ for a car that old. but hopefully all the lines will be straight when there done.

<<I still have yet to find a definitive answer in regard to the grease. The grease on this one is definitely more than shipping grease. Others have said that tapered bearings shouldn't be packed more than 30% full (IIRC).>> i've never heard the 30% thing before, doesn't make sense though. looking at the cost of a bucket of wheel bearing grease, compared to a wheel bearing job, why wouldn't you just repack it to be safe? We all know manufatures are cheap, so i would be willing to bet they just use the cheapest shipping grease in there bearings to keep them from rusting. imagine how much $$$ it would cost them to put 2 oz of good grease X 200,000 bearings. my advise, repack with hi temp bearing grease. i have always done it and havent had a problem yet.

<<on a similar note, the mechanic inwhich the previous owners of my 95 legacy ls took the car to said that hte rear main was bad.........would this leak oil? cuz it's been the same level for over 2 months now (just over full from when they refilled it after the last checkup) >> like i said earlier, <<what makes you think the rear main seal is bad? i've never seen a rear main seal go on a subaru engine unless its been sitting for years.>> i would take it to a different mechanic, being the old one "overfilled" the oil last time!

<<That universal cam tool from Schely looks just like the one I've got from Harbor Freight. And I've used it on EJ22s and Honda F22s, it worked like a charm. But I've never tried it on an EJ25 however. Pye>> thats because you need the cam holding tool, not the wrench, for the EJ25. it looks like the one in the bottom pic of Al_SemC's post. <<but it's hard to tell from the pics if they would work on these cam sprockets as the SVX tool has that bend to get into the cam recess but the Schley's look almost straight from the pics. >> save yourself some money and get the wrench with the bend in it. it will fit the EG33 and the EJ22 engines. it has the same distance from the knobs. i have both, the offset (bent) one works fine.

<<That's the crankshaft pully hold-down tool and has nothing to do with taking off the camshaft sprockets.>> wow, i guess I screwed up all 30 timing belt jobs that I have done in the past 5 years! LOL, nice to resurect an old post. <<The forked tool in the photo is in fact a camshaft sprocket wrench 499207100 although I'm not sure if it'll work on the 2.5 l engine in question. I have one (and a crankshfat tool) and believe it was worth the money.>> yes, at the time of the post i wasnt sure if he had a SOHC or DOHC engine. thanks
