Once again, I am humbled by the overwhelming level of expertise on this board. Often times its difficult with my noobishness to even post a seemingly dumb thing such as this. But fortune favors the prepared mind, and I am prepared to be embarrassed in order to learn.... many thanks! To answer your question Spiffy, no, can't move forward or backwards after braking hard. Pumping sets it free... but Gloyale makes a good point regarding attributing it mistakenly to another solution. So I took a look at both rear drums, and the springs look good, in fact new-ish. Gave everything a good cleaning, and incidentally, eliminated an annoying rubbing sound by removing a hardened clump of dirt/dust/rust from the groove of the backplate assembly, woohoo! So OK, point well-taken, I will not do that again. I do intend to switch to discs for the rear, but my budget will not allow that to happen for a while (planning & saving for a Weber swap). Boy do I want to try to replicate this with hill-holder disconnected... but I won't:-\ Thanks again all! "USMB keeps my Soob alive" - my future t-shirt idea...

I've searched through the threads and haven't found anything specific to my issue... please forgive me if there is and just haven't found it. I have read that braking while in reverse will help to get sticky drums to adjust. Well, yesterday I tried this technique, and while I admit, I hit the brakes really hard (not slam, but harder than normal) I found myself with locked brakes all-around. After 2 or 3 pumps of the pedal, the brakes would release and everything would go back to normal. Any ideas? Thanks!

So I got the thumbs-up from my better-half I got hammered on my taxes and am much poorer now . I will most likely sign-up/register in a week or so. but I am worried about the trip out there with my 84 GL. I think I'm gonna try to recruit a chase-vehicle, maybe my bro-in-law... if that doesn't workout, then I may have to chase your Soobs out there... Cool offer for the shared camping! Thanks! I'm a nice guy, I swear!

Thanks GD! I figured that would be the answer... I know there's a HiCrappy in the JY which is affordable, but what I want is a Weber 32/36... much more moolah! In the meantime, what are the consequences if I let it go until next month/payday... it started up fine this morning, 1st try, & drove rather well. It's only leaking when it's cranking and not firing right up... but while driving/idling it doesn't.

EA81 Hitachi carb I had trouble starting it this morning, so when I took a look at the backside of the carb I noticed gas slowly leaking out of the following area... driver's side in the throttle body... seems to be a recessed port of some kind. My FSM doesn't indicate what it is... and its definitely leaking out of this "hole", not the gasket seam... First pic is a large area shot, second pic is area in question... What is it?

Running it by the wife tonight for financial reasons... if she's cool with it, I will register tonight! Roughly 2.5 hr drive?, I think the Soob can handle it... Is there going to be a Soob-caravan heading out there? When are you heading out? Can I just pop a tent up, or do I have to pay the $15 for a campsite?

My hill holder is currently leaking. To all those who disconnected it, does this stop the leaking? Does "disconnecting it" simply involve unlatching the cable, or re-routing brake lines? I would like to keep it functioning, so has anyone tried repairing the leaking hill-holder? Any input will be helpful and much appreciated... ?

I am happier than a pig in sh*#! The old girl passed emissions with zero ppm to spare; the HC value was exactly the cut-off limit... For the past two weeks I've been adjusting the idle mixture & idle speed screws to get the best combo. Filled her up with 93 octane, added some Seafoam to the gas tank, and gave her fresh oil. In Salem County NJ, the inspections go by appointments, so I ran her for about an hour prior to showing up - got her nice and hot. While hot, and before pulling in, I adjusted the idle speed to hover at slightly below 1000 rpm... I was nervous as hell. I wasn't sure if the old girl would start back up once the tech jumped in to do his thing... but she did, not once, but four different times! Everything seemed to be going smoothly, then they took off the gas tank cap to pressure test it... the cap failed! I felt like saying "I'll be right back...", but no worries... got a new GT cap already and got a follow-up appointment on Monday. The best part is if I go back within 45 days, all they do is check the cap, not re-perform the whole inspection! WooHoo!

I have a dirt driveway, besides 2 jackstands and the "built-in" tool shelf in the engine compartment, that's my "shop". Oh yeah, and the "tool shed" in the back of the wagon... So what do you guys have the luxury of working in?

A/c.... Can It Be Done!?!?!

Love it! Necessity is the mother of invention! I give you both props for your innovative thinking! -
Me too. I was a bit disappointed when I couldn't find United States listed in the drop-down for residency (i think it fell under "overseas-other"). Is the reason for this that the boxer-diesel won't be released in the U.S., as my buddy told me, or is this untrue? it's obvious Subaru is going for the "sophisticated" look/feel/appeal... where does that leave my broke arse? :-\ .... i guess still in my dirt driveway working on my 84 wagon... Sweet rides though! Is it just me or does that Forrester look enormous compared to current models?
