2WD XT rear struts are actually TALLER than the factory RX ones. I heard a rumor that 2WD sedan struts are the lowest... but can anyone confirm this? I'd have to see it to believe it. Before: After: I'm running 185/60/14 tires on Pugs and the only rubbing I've had is when hitting a bump while going around a sharp 90 degree turn (into a driveway, etc). It hasn't done any visible damage to the tires or the fenders, so I've left it alone for now.

Probably the most important thing to keep an eye on when checking the car is the engine- specifically the heads. When you start it, keep a sharp eye out for any smoke or sweet smell, and let it warm up to operating temp- if the temp keeps climbing, it likely has some issues. Transmission wise, if it's an automatic, be sure you test it in every single gear. The 3 speed AT's have some shifting issues sometimes, but the manuals are pretty trouble-free. This car WAS available with an LSD, and being a GL-10 it is more likely to have one. But, it's probably got an open diff. The way to tell is to look at the rear diff, an LSD will have a big L S D on the tag. If the tag's clean, this should be visible from several feet away. Body wise- you'll probably find some surface rust. Structural areas to check are the frame rails a few inches inside from the rocker panel, on the front floorboards- and the upper strut mounts in the rear fender wells. I think that about covers the basics.

Is there any nice, newer N/A engine i can swap into my RX?
TROGDOR! replied to gotime242's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
As far as easy swaps go... it's fairly straightforward to swap in a N/A 4cyl out of an 85-91 XT. They only make 100hp, but the one I had was one of the strongest and most reliable Subaru engines I ever had. Very easy to maintain, very tough, and the highest gas mileage of the late 80's 4cyl Subarus. Not sure what all is required to do this conversion, but it's fairly easy. I'm assuming just the engine, exhaust Y-pipe, and airbox/intake tube will need to be changed, as well as putting your original belt-driven accessories and crank pulley on the new engine. -
Need some buying advice - 1993 Loyale Wagon
TROGDOR! replied to Ktlou's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I disagree on the engine cost. A brand new CCR EA82T cost close to $1000 less than your low estimate, including shipping most of the way across the country. -
Need some buying advice - 1993 Loyale Wagon
TROGDOR! replied to Ktlou's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If I found a showroom condition 93 Loyale, with well under 100,000 original miles, and could afford it- I still wouldn't pay a penny more than $2000 US. And that's coming from here in the middle of rustville. -
rubber cargo mats for Loyale
TROGDOR! replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Legacy Outback cargo mat fits like a glove. It covers 90%+ of the cargo area. I had one in my Loyale and it looked great. -
Is the RX really that fast?!!!
TROGDOR! replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
55 in first though... I know Subarus are pretty resistant to overrevving, but a speed like that would be breaking some engine parts. Not to mention you'd be revving so high, it'd be beyond the limit of the tach. I had a dragging speedometer head in my Loyale- it would often peg the speedometer as soon as I started rolling, but usually bouncing around 55-70. It never did it constantly though... always bouncing up and down like mad. Pretty obvious it was a broken speedometer head. -
D/R RWD = 8 Forward Gears & 2 Reverse
TROGDOR! replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm running my RX in RWD and have shudder coming from the rear end while making very sharp turns at low speed (i.e. pulling out of a parking lot onto a road, 90 degree turn, under 15mph). It shakes and rumbles like crazy until I straighten the wheels, go above about 15, or push in the clutch. I've been told that this is the LSD attempting to engage and is fairly normal. Is it? -

More than likely the speedometer is on crack. As in, the drum that the end of the speedometer cable spins in is way too sensitive, moving the needle at amazing speed. Usually they break the other way around- gain a full 1000 rpm on the highway, and the speedo needle doesn't budge for a minute or so. -
10-15 min of ping then all is well?!?!?!

A nonturbo Loyale should run perfectly on 87 octane. Type of fuel isn't the problem. -
D/R RWD = 8 Forward Gears & 2 Reverse
TROGDOR! replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
DO NOT weld the rear diff!! A welded differential absolutely cannot be used on dry, hard pavement, even if it's disconnected from the transmission. Even the rear wheels need to spin at different directions when going around corners. Welding the rear diff will result in horrible stresses to the rear axles and diff as well as tons of wheelhop while cornering. This will also make the vehicle very hard to control. If you weld the rear diff, you'll need to ONLY drive the car in FWD on pavement, and remove one rear axle EVERY TIME you exit the trail. Driving a welded diff on pavement is not an option, period. -
Anyone charted performance mods?
TROGDOR! replied to Todd in Seattle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Being a Loyale, that car is just begging for a Dual Range transmission swap. Doooo eeeet! Then go for the lift and wheels. -
Welcome aboard! May I suggest not allowing your wife to drive it, as well as investing in an immobilizer/kill switch and every security gimmick you can think of. Seems as though you and vehicles have a bit of a rough history.

So I found out I have a rust hole in my crossover pipe. I went to pull the one out of the parts car- unbolted it from the heads, unbolted it from the turbo, and found that it wouldn't slide out between the crossmember and the head. I ended up having to unbolt the passenger side motor mount and jack the engine up about an inch before getting it out. This was on a mostly dismantled parts car. My drivable RX is most definitely not dismantled, and I don't want to spend forever putting a small pipe on it if I don't need to. Any easier way of getting this pipe out?

100 dollar XT runs and drives
TROGDOR! replied to torxxx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The XT6 switch won't work. You're going to need a switch from any 85-87 XT. They are mounted on the side of the armrest. 87.5-91 XT and XT6 have the switches on top of the armrest. -

10hp would be correct. They make 100hp. Feels like a lot more though, and I think gearing has something to do with that. -
I swear, it's teasing me. The air worked this morning on the way to work. At lunch it didn't work. On the way home, it worked again, and kept blowing nice and cold through all of my errands tonight. What the crap?

I went to two looking for an axle for the RX. I had them show me every axle they listed for a turbo Roo, and each and every one had a 23 spline DOJ. One of the guys even had the balls to tell me "maybe your car isn't an RX." After tons of badgering and thumbing through catalogs, they were finally able to order me a 25 spline axle. Idiots. -
Having some trouble with the A/C in my RX- it's the typical turbo system with the square compressor sitting outside the alternator. The system was totally dry from when the engine was removed. Yesterday I installed an R134a retrofit kit and charged the system. It worked great, nice and cold. Today I used it on my lunch break from work, and it was still ice cold and strong- until 15 minutes on the road. The A/C compressor suddenly disengaged as if I turned the switch off. Still can't get it to come on. The switch on the dash seems to be working properly (Still adjusts the vents) and the system still has a full charge. All fuses are in good shape. I'm no pro when it comes to A/C systems, and this one already has me stumped. Suggestions?

I've never heard of anything but an RX getting the bodykit. You're sure this car is badged as a GL-10? Also look for special GL-10 features such as a digidash, sunroof, and the luxury seats. What I think it could be? -RX sedan that they repainted -GL-10 sedan where someone put on the RX kit.

Still seems to me that the turbo coupes are rarer. I've seen 3 Black RX's to 1 turbo coupe in this area in the past few years. Of course, the 2WD turbo coupe didn't have the dual range box. :-p Junkyard near me has one of those.

Chop the roof off and make it into an EA82 Brat. -
If your car is nonturbo, it's going to be SPFI. MPFI nonturbo engines were never put into the wagons, except for the 1985 2WD GL-10. All turbo engines were MPFI. The only other car to have an MPFI nonturbo engine was the 1985-91 4cyl XT. SPFI engine is distinguished by a single big fat black hose running in a straight line from the airbox to the throttle body. On top of the throttle body it turns into a rectangular shape.

Some local discount gas stations here have started adding ethanol to their gas. The sign states that they use up to 10%. Apparently it IS legal if they tell you beforehand. Any side effects that could come from running this gas?
