  1. If I push the I/C any farther down then it is behind the bumper and won't be in the airstream. I like the idea that that fellow has because he kept the piping short, but I'm looking for a bit cleaner install with minimal modifications to the engine bay and bodywork of the car. Want to keep the I/C as stealth as possible as far as looks go. The way it's going now I'll be able to reinstall the grill (modified slightly). So, any input on the I/C not sitting flush against the radiator? I can fabricate a sealing ridge between the I/C and the radiator if it need it. Going to have to fabricate a plenum for the throttle body because it's 2 3/8" OD and the piping I'm using is 1 3/4"OD.I've got a few ideas on how. Regards, Jay
  2. Are you just coming to this sight to rile the natives? I think the above posters aren't trying to impune your ability as much as defend something that they hold in high esteem. My wife used to catch the weight of the car with the clutch when changing gears when we first got married. I didn't say anything for awhile and then it dawned on me that she learned to drive in a 72 Beetle. In those low HP cars it's a good idea not to let the revs drop or you run out of power, Hence her driving style. After pointing this out and a bit of coaching on rev matching she is much easier on parts. Be paticularly observant of others and the way they drive next time your a passenger, you might learn something new. or better. Jay Ford would be my second choice in an vehicle too, although they don't have much to offer in the way of cars. Trucks, now that's a different story.
  3. Looks like the I/C will not be flush against the radiator because of clearance issues with the piping. Looking for opinions as to how important it is to get it flush. Anyone? Had to cut the "ears" off of the headlight buckets for I/C bracket clearance. Ordered the hoodpins earlier and finally dug them out of the box. They are stainless and sit very flat on the hood. Not really obtrusive. I'm still not sure about mounting these. I'm going to look into either mounting the hood backwards with Saab hood hinges or using the hood latches out of a Jeep Cherokee. Any input or ideas would be appreciated. A non-car person said offhandedly that I should "make the hood open like a Vette". You can get ideas from anywhere. Slow at it, Jay edit: Only about 2 1/2" of the I/C will end up behind the bumper.
  4. Estes j/y between C'burg and Floyd on Daniels Run road had a nice 87ish turbo wagon in there not too long ago. (no LSD BTW) Reed's Garage on 221 from Roanoke to Floyd deals with Subarus fairly consistantly, try him too. He might have a line on one. 540-929-4236. Part's Unlimited in Vinton, Va. had several Ea82 cars last I checked. I've got to go to the J/Y this week I'll look for you. Sorry to hear about your car. Jay
  5. Have you went back to the basics yet? Seriously, Check the silly stuff. Is it out of gas? Ground wires? Ignition switch? Did hooking the ignitor up backwards hurt it? I wish you the best. Jay
  6. The tire tread on the hood looks like the tire tread on your car. Happy coincidence? Jay
  7. And yes Baccaruda the heater core/ a/c unit comes apart quick when you just don't care what it looks like after it's out. Come to think of it, most of the dash came out with a hint of dedicated destruction. Jay
  8. Yes, I say pass. They're better ones out there. Even in Va. Email your # and I'll hunt down here for you too. Jay But, I do have most of the parts to make it into a 5 speed.
  9. Quick! High temp clearcoat it before it oxidizes! Lots of elbow love on that one. Jay
  10. Thanks for the breakdown. Working long hours in the theatre right now. I have no choice but to take my time. Although snow may be coming and I am currently occupying both bays in the garage. RX on one side awaiting silicone I/C hoses and parts Legacy in the other. Looks like I'll be courteous and scrape ice and warm up the Legacy for my wife in the mornings. I'll update and ask more Q's soon. Watch for this thread to pop back up. Thanks again for the tips. Jay
  11. Try to find the Factory Service Manual for your car. Haynes and Chilton pale in comparison, especially concerning the bigger undertakings. Jay
  12. Yeah, but how much of this mess did you end up using and where did you put it in your EA car? Jay
  13. This is a direct bolt on for the Ea82 cars and the fitment listed is for a newer Impreza? Am I reading this right? Jay
  14. Pictures of the wiring under the dash. Just getting started. What a mess. I take heart in knowing that most of the wires won't be used. I've labeled everything under the hood and have been keeping track of the nonessential wiring. Got my diagrams thanks to Josh( Legacy777) and picked up a few more diagrams at the subaru dealership. More to come. Jay
  15. I had to deal with a stripped bolt on the TC to flexplate. Couldn't get the bolt off so I cut the flexplate. Ugly, I know. I didn't want to mess with getting the TC back into the transmission. It was from a parts car so keeping the flexplate wasn't an issue. I did this while the engine and transmission were still in the car. No room for the torch, chisel, smaller socket, nothing. Dremel is king. But so ugly. So very ugly. Jay
  16. Looking for a 1991 Legacy ECU pinout and wiring diagram. Can anyone help? Here is what I am doing. I haven't seen anyone document the wiring harness work for the EJ swap. I plan on doing the documenting and picture taking while I'm in this thing ripping all the wiring out. Then I'm going to strip the harness and mount it on a sheet of 4'X8' to keep it workable. If anyone could hep me out with the diagrams I would be grateful. Thanks, Jay jaykili(at)cox(dot)net
  17. http://schoenfeldheaders.com If anyone is interested, probably in a couple months, I'll sell some of this pipe I bought. remind me end of March/mid April. Jay
  18. Schoenfeld Header company is where I ordered the mandrel bent tubing. It's basically a box of offcuts and various pipe sections. Under 200.00 shipped. Jay
  19. The intercooler started out life looking like this: I found it local from a 240Z person. They aren't that much on Ebay. The aluminum is not the easiest to TIG though. Jay
  20. UPS came to the house today and dropped off a box of 36' of mandrel bent tubing. Anyone else see a header/uppipe too? I finished modifying the Starion intercooler last Fri before work. I started driving the wagon because the RX will be in the garage for the next couple weeks. This is going to be interesting to say the least. Jay
  21. How about some sound clips? What sounds good it definately a subjective proposition. Jay
  22. There are different types of Flowmaster mufflers. What series Flowmaster did you put on your car? Choosing the wrong series may be your problem. I have 2 1/2" exhaust from the turbo, high flow catalytic converter, and a Flowmaster on my car and it doesn't sound like a Toyota pick-up. Will heard it at an autocross in Radford, Va. maybe he has some insight. Jay
  23. One in Virginia. Bolt sizes for the kit were way off for the smaller lift blocks up front. Caused many, many problems. Holes in lift blocks were not drill centered. PITA. Looks good though. Jay
