  1. I'm not sure what you mean by ID, but I'd say you have an EA81 Engine. That's just the name of the engine; 1800cc, overhead valve horizontally-opposed petrol engine. An EA82 is the same sort of idea, but instead of using pushrods to open the valves, it had two timing belts and an overhead cam system, one on each bank. Here's a link for more info about that engine. An EJ is a later style of engine Subaru put out, and they're still using it today. I believe it started in 1989, but check out this link for more precise info. The EJ series had one timing belt, came out in both carb and EFI, as well as dual overhead cam (DOHC, or Quad Cam) and single overhead cam (SOHC), like the earlier EA82. It came out as a variety of displacements, such as 1500cc (EJ15), 1800cc (EJ18), 2000cc (EJ20), 2200cc (EJ22), and the EJ25, which is, you guessed right, 2500cc. They're regarded as far more reliable, more economical, more powerful, and easier to customize, especially more so then the EA82, which is a pig of an engine, unreliable, fairly gutless, and prone to overheating, particularly the turbo models. Hope that clears some of it up for you. Any more questions just ask, and everyone will do their best to help. Everyone has to start at the bottom to get to the top , and noone ever gets to the top, even if a few people are mighty close Oh, and also, welcome to the forum
  2. One of my friends who works at a machine shop has just told me he has a CNC machine. Great. I also just recently got AutoCAD, but am pretty much useless at it. Anyone got a CAD drawing of an adapter plate I can take to my friend and have made up?
  3. They never stopped putting them in AFAIK - they were just extremely selective about what countries they sold them in. It's like STIs - we had STIs from about 1993 onwards, whereas you guys in the States only got them in 04'. Maybe they just think people in NZ and Aus all have mud and rock tracks to their hermit huts deep in the forest or something. Who knows! Haha. Hey - at least the Japanese don't think your country is redneck enough! Haha
  4. To be honest dude, I'm not really sure. I think the SPFI and MPFI EA82s had some sort of neutral switch, but don't quote me on that. I think they're located on the shifter linkage under the gearboot.
  5. I'd say that would probably help you a lot. It's not a big job, and not like you've wasted a day if it doesn't work. I'd say thats your problem though.
  6. I'm pretty sure thats a belt gone right there bud.
  7. just awesome. Maybe not a brat, but sweet just the same
  8. Thanks for the info! Was really concise and I think I've got a better idea of it now. I was wondering before - would it be possible to cut the bellhousing off a junkyard EA gearbox, somehow get it ground down flat to 1/2", and then just drill the EJ holes? Or is that just asking for trouble?
  9. There is also a new version of the EA to EJ writeup, making it easier to read and a bit more aesthetically pleasing. Get it here.
  10. Oh sorry, forgot to mention. 1989 DL Wagon, EA82, 5sp D/R. Am adapting an EJ22 to the original gearbox.
  11. Okay guys, my carbed EJ22 project is gaining steam, and I need an adapter plate. I'm too far away to buy one from the states, so decided I'm going to make my own. But I've got a few questions. 1. Does anyone have a step-by-step guide for making one? (Sounds stupid I know, but I want to make it once and make it right) 2. All the time I see adapter plates on here with a big gaping hole in the bottom - Is this normal? Or is there a lip on the gearbox that this gap is designed for? Surely it can't be good to have a possiblity of a stone or even water flying into your clutch 3. Does anyone have any good recommendations for what kind of steel to use? 4. Do I need to use the dowel pins from the EJ engine, and if so, are there already dowel holes that match in the EA bellhousing? Sorry about some of these questions - I wish I could just walk outside and have a look at my wagon but I'm about 1000km away from it Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Just wondering, when using a XT6 pressure plate, is there any part numbers available? We didn't get the XT6 over here, but I believe the auto shops do have a listing for a 2.7l Alcyone. Same thing?
  13. Haha. Tui, brewed by women, gorgeous women.... who know fuck all about brewing good beer.
  14. Yeah I will definitely. Any good tracks down your way? She's pretty standard at the moment, nothing changed except I took the carpet out when she died in a river a while back (water does not like going through carpet in a big way) and that's about it. Still goes anywhere you want it too with enough thought about how ya gonna do it and judicious application of the accelerator Love it, hahahaha. I knew there were some people who drink something other then Tui floating around somewhere! Haha
  15. Haha that's a rad idea, but no, never seen one. Might be fairly easy for someone with photoshop skills to make one?
  16. Damn right Pride of the South and all that!! I tell ya bro, after been in Auckland a while you really appreciate the South!! Hahaha, love the one handed drifter pose!!! Now you just need to take your front halfshafts out and gain about 400hp, and you're set! Will have to go for a wheel sometime eh?
  17. Have you checked the timing belts? The belts themselves might be new, but that doesn't help if a tensioner seizes. Rip off the two outer inspection covers and just take a peek. 5 minutes work or less to definitely make sure its not the belts.
  18. Found some old photos of last year when I was still in the same Island as my Subie of me and my brother doing some light 4WDing down the river. As you can probably see, his "wagon" is called the Rogue for a reason Here's my old girl "The Hickswagen" just about to go over a creek; Halfway... Made it! Here's a good one, me and my bro (thats me on the left) drinking a beer in front of our weapons. Mine is a 89 Leone DL EA82 5spd DR (the Hickswagen), his a 86 EA82T Leone S/R auto...once was a wagon called the Rogue. All in all was a good day. I miss my wagon... Now just waiting on some cash to do a 4in lift, 27 inch mud/snows, and a carbed EJ22 swap! Also a bit of painting and panelbeating....as you can probably see. Anyone else have any cool photos of their cars wheeling or doing crazy stuff?
  19. Oh of course, the heads, duh . Yeah it would defintely be easy, just have to pay an extra so much for additional baggage and you'd be sorted!
  20. Check your local junk yards - that'd be the best bet.
  21. We have absolutely PILES of EJ18 carb manifold and heads with dizzys. In fact theres about three or four in the pick-a-part down the road. According to their website, I can get the carb and manifold for $48NZD, which is about $33USD, and the heads for $86NZD, which is $60USD. The dizzy is $33NZD, which is $23USD. So for, I don't know, $40 USD on top of that and shipping I could pull all that and fire it over to the states. Wouldn't be too hard. All up looking at about $156 USD plus shipping. Not really sure if that'd be the exact price, but from the prices off their website thats what I'm guessing. I'm going to do this myself first, to get everything sorted, so no guarantees just yet, but give me a PM if you're interested.
  22. Sweet dude, sounds like you're enjoying your Subie. Stoked for ya What kind do you have?
  23. Let me get this straight: You're thrashing a TURBO vehicle, one that is not known for its reliability when running its best, when its cold? That's just asking for trouble. Anyone wanna take bets on how long it's gonna take till we see a "Engine blown! Help!" thread? Seriously dude, the EA82Ts are not the most reliable engines, and it takes a lot of work to keep them up to scratch. I personally don't think I would own one again. And any kind of "spirited" driving when its still cold is going to be bad for the engine. You shouldn't thrash it before it hits operating temp. Period. When I was a bit younger and a lot stupider I killed a car by repeated cold thrashing. I learnt my lesson pretty quick. I don't even take my cars above 3,000 RPM until they're warmed up enough anymore.
