  1. The guy goes by Beefaru. The issue has been brought up before, and he's not sure how it all worked...a subaru mechanic put the box together for that car. If you do find something out, PLEASE let me know. A 4.11:1 ratio in a d/r 5 speed would be THE BOMB for my setup.
  2. The EA82 manifold is too wide to match up with the intake ports on the EA71. Sorry
  3. Not to rain on your parade, but with the trouble a few board members have had with running Cu HG's, why exactly would one want to do this?
  4. I think 12k is Amsoil's suggested change interval. (I don't personally believe in running ANY oil for that long. In my car, I run Mobil1 synthetic and change every 3000 miles, but your car is your car and you can do whatever you want.)
  5. If you take care of just about anything, it will run for a long time. My example is the little 50cc scooter I rode around on when I was 14-16. Most of them self-destruct after a couple thousand miles. I bought a used Yamaha Riva (the cheapest model they sold) for $500 with 1500 miles on it. I ran Yamalube synthetic oil, changed the plug and gear oil as well as cleaned the air filter at all the suggested intervals. When I sold it for $350 two years later, it had 6500 miles on it and still ran absolutely like new.
  6. There was a TSB released saying that bridge cracks are normal and don't affect the running of the engine. If it's been severely overheated, or you can see that the cracks obviously extend into either port, that's a problem. Otherwise, use a small punch to tap the cracked portion down a bit (prevents detonation) and run them.
  7. Do the EJ swap yourself...I've had trouble finding shops that do that sort of thing. The subaru specialist place here didn't even like the idea of an SPFI swap on my EA82, so I did it myself and laughed at them:grin: . Then I asked about doing an EJ swap and got the same response, so I did it myself and laughed at them again. Depending on how you do it, you can expect to pay about a grand for all the stuff you need for an EJ swap.
  8. Gas station attendants are known to mess up and put gas in diesel vehicles. A friend of mine had a brand new Duramax die because of that:rolleyes: .
  9. Have you changed the PCV valve (and used an OEM subaru one)? That's a really common source of oil usage on these cars, and it's often hard to see any obvious signs of it as the oil burning comes and goes depending on driving conditions.
  10. Whoever told you that is smoking something pretty good. I actually have thrown a rod on an EA82, but it was entirely because of my own stupid mistake when assembling the engine that caused a bearing to self destruct after about 5000 miles. I have heard of three other people throwing rods on EA motors...at least two of which were caused by serious abuse.
  11. I have found the Haynes manuals reasonably helpful. They provide decent step-by-step procedures for most maintenance. You might consider buying a Chilton brand manual for your car as well...I think they're a little bit better.
  12. That looks like it's in really nice shape! Did the plastic trim on the doors come from the factory the same color as the body, or was it painted?
  13. EA82 SPFI pistons will get the compression up to 9.5:1. With some milling, you can get more. You should be able to compensate for some milling just by adjusting the valve lash differently. I'd just go with OEM rings from a discount supplier. They don't fail very often, so I think they must be pretty good.
  14. That's good stuff:lol: . It's a good thing the cops don't know anything about subarus.
  15. Actually, up here it was $3.10 at the time and over $4 in Canada .
  16. WTF?!! That looks like an impreza body! The site is obviously British, but that car is a mystery to me.
  17. Hmmm, mechanics' graffitti....I'll have to think of some good stuff to write on/in my projects. I can see it now on the inside of an EA82 cam tower: "Leaks again already, huh?"
  18. Welcome to the board, fellow Alaskan! If you're even in the Anchorage area, give us a ring.
  19. Is it a 5 speed or automatic? If auto, I'd worry about carrying that big of a load, especially if it's hot outside. If 5-speed, just take it easy and you'll be fine. I haven't towed anything for that sort of distance before, but I have towed skiffs as well as one-place snowmachine trailers behind my subaru for up to 150 miles at a time. If it can handle a 500 pound sled plus a trailer, I doubt you'll have trouble towing a bike.
  20. Leave it to Subaru to make something weird like that:cool: .
  21. So, are you saying that the error should be calculated as a % difference or is it always, say, 10mph?
  22. Can you shake the wheel back and forth if you grab and pull on it? My vote is for wheel bearings or maybe a stripped hub at this point.
  23. A thread in the historic forum got me thinking about all the crazy stuff I've done in order to keep my subarus going, and figured that the people who freqent this board must have some good stories about the lengths they've gone to for their soobs. So, what's the farthest you've driven to pick up a new car or rescue an old one? Broken the law in order to get/keep your car? Any other stories of insanity? I guess I'll start off with my two interesting stories: 1. When my car threw a rod on the way home from college two years ago, I hitched a ride 400 miles home, then came back the next day with a truck and a tow dolley and hauled the car home. Just an extra 800 miles of driving and the associated fuel costs for a (then) plain old EA82 wagon. 2. In order to complete my EJ22 swap this year, I ended up making not one but two 500-mile round trips to Whitehorse for all the parts. One of those trips had to be done at 90mph in order to get done in time. I also didn't have any of the paperwork for the engine to bring it through the border, so I almost got in DEEP trouble with US Customs.
  24. The distance you have to drive is irrelavent when it's a SUBARU! When I did my EJ conversion, I had to drive 1000 miles total (two trips) to pick up parts for it, and I didn't think twice about it:drunk: .
  25. There was a video of the WRX-powered EA82 wagon doing a pretty substantial jump. I'm not sure if it's still there or not.
