What causes that Subaru ticking?
SuperRallyRoo replied to Subafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ive tried everything i can think of to rid my hatch of its ticking, I changed the oil, I put in magic marvel oil, and it still comes back every time I hit the freeway. I think it may be a stuck lifter or something. Sometimes MMO does work though, I believe it worked for Ed. I also hear the oil pump gaskets being bad may cause the noise? Good luck... -
Overheating when headlights are on.
SuperRallyRoo replied to SuperRallyRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My friend Fabio who knows his wiring shizit... Found the problems. It was 2 major voltage drops 1 at the headlights itself where someone (previous owner maybe?) cut the headlight low beam wire and crimped it togethor by hand! So we fixed that, there was alot of bogus junk wiring held togethor by black duct tape that we soldered togethor and fixed... The battery terminals where cleaned, and we fixed the ground going to the engine and to the body. It actually idles smoother and does not have a 2 1/2 volt drop when the head lights are turned on! It doesn't overheat anymore either. So ya wooo hoo I'm happy now Sounds like I have a sticky lifter though because sometimes it just ticks like mad! I have full oil and magic marvel mystery oil... So i don't know what the problem is there. Anyway gonna go test drive it some more. -
On my 1981 hatchback it overheats when I turn the headlights on, like goes right under the red and I am pretty sure its telling the truth because if i'm on the freeway I can barely maintain what it says is 50mph (27" tires) and it starts top sputter and cough. So I turn the headlights off on the freeway at 12 night, and just drive cause my tail lights are hardwired to the acc. So Anyway it cools down after I turn the lights off. The heater on full blast on hot seems to do nothing. But it also doesn't seem that hot! So I really have no idea whats going on. At first the radiator was a little low, but that didn't help when i put some water in it. Should I try to dump some more anti freeze in there, change the radiator, change the thermostat? Look at the head light wiring? I'm thinking about rewiring the headlights and seeing if that does the trick. Please help!

I'll be there in the lifted hatch, Its legal as of today! Woo hoo! -
Ok another thing I noticed is it idles down VERY slowly. Could this be the same problem?

I have a ea81 subaru hatchback... Its idling all funky, i will set it to 700-800 it will stay there till i move then go back to 1000 i will set it again and do it all over again! But when I shut the thing off, and start it up it idles at like 400-500rpm! What could be the problem? I have checked the vacuum lines, changed oil & filter, changed wires & plugs, changed the air filter... And added some Magic Marvel oil. That helped the lifter tapping I also have fixed the exhaust system, it used to be held on by vice grips! Should I spray some carb cleaner in the thing? I think its a hitachi carb. Still has all of its emissions crap. I have also lowered the fuel mixture about 3 full turns untill it started to stumble then I backed off. I have had to drive it and tinker with the mixture and idle alot. It just always seems to want to go back to 900-1000rpm. I have to go threw emissions soon and I'm worried it won't pass idle emissions.

Sorry to hear about that! Here in seattle we rarely have to worry about cars literally falling apart. Good luck finding a good body! Hope it serves u good again. When ever one of my cars die, I take its shift knob and use it on the next car.

SuperRallyRoo replied to greggbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I used the ea82 pressure plate on my ea81 to ea82 5spd d/r conversion. And there was no slipping at all. Uh oh! Now i remember... I used the ea82 flywheel before, now I have an ea81 flywheel, is it going to work!? Sorry for being slightly off topic! -

How about we make it a 3-late run? That way Austin could join in on some of the fun and we could still get pictures before dark? So I'm thinking Saturday the 10th at 3pm. But scooby needs to make the final decision sense its his idea! And I am wondering, is this going to be an off road trip? I assume not sense I don't know any off roading spots around Alki beach. But I could be wrong? -
