  1. Nobody, I figured it would be a board member for sure, huh? Well he took notice of my RX as he drove passed and we exchanged head nods as I passed him on the freeway. It was a sharp looking wagon. Gary

Thats one of the reasons I loved driving my old VW in the snow, nothing hangs below the smooth bell pan, just point it in the right direction get up some speed and slide right over. Was also great when the parking lot was full except for the spot the was plowed half full of snow, I could slide the front end up the pile tell the wheels came off the ground and get into spaces nobody else could use, saved a lot of walking in the muck. I would think some sort of full width skid plate that extends back to the axles should do the trick. But as Pat said, watch the highcentering. I did that once in a Honda Civic, the snow was deep enough that the bumper was pushing it a bit. About 40 feet of forward driving and it had packed enough underneath the front pan to lift the front wheels... and there it sat. I should have backed out of the parking lot, the road was plowed. Gary
  3. I saw a clean light brown metallic turbo wagon, with a black hood scoop, 15" Pugs and fog lights at 3:35pm today. I was leaving work (in my RX), we both got on the freeway headed east. I'm bettin its somebody on the board. Gary
  4. Yeah, my '74 Datsun Z had a drain plug, very handy when working on a car that has sat idle for a few years. Only down side I can see is it makes it pertty easy to steal somebodys gas, just a bucket and a wrench. I'm betting the factory dropped them to save the 29 cents on building each tank. Gary
  5. Thats exactly what I was expecting for the VSS. I'm betting the micro switch on the odometer is for the EGR light trip or something similar. Gary
  6. The FI cars (with ECU), do have a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the speed-O head. It could be a simple pulse from a micro switch but I would think it would need at least a few pulses per second even at low speed to have enough resolution. Could the switch in question provide that kind of frequency? I figured the VSS was optical but I really dont know. If I remember correctly the EGR light mileage interval on the carbed cars is 60,000 miles. Gary
  7. You can find my post near the end of that long LegacyCentral thread (page 5), short version here... Wet sand with progressive grits, 400 - 1500, finish with compound and buffer. Gary
  8. About the micro switch... I know the carb cars have a EGR light that is triggered by mileage, not sure about the FI cars. Gary
  9. You sure you didn't by the can that Miles returned?? Seriously though, I'm not suprised you didn't see a change. Gary
  10. That would be me, the car was my ’87 wagon. I started driving the car to work and back in the fall, on warm days pulling the hills would push it near the red. As winter came I had no cooling issues, then warmer spring days brought back the issues. Upon checking the radiator I found only the top 3 and bottom 2 tubes were warm and the rest was dead cold, plugged solid. I replaced the radiator with a new stock single core (aftermarket) and have had no issues with overheating since. Gary
  11. Yeah right, good luck finding it. Its pretty well know in the VW circles that about the only way to get your hands on a Syncro (or its running gear) is to pry it from the cold dead hands of its owner. And, it wont handle much more than stock power and would be rear engine. Gary
  12. I'm betting its a bad radiator. I had a similar problem with my RX, so I borrowed the brand new single core from my wagon, it was fine on flat ground or low speed, but I still saw some higher temps climbing the pass with the A/C on. I'm now running an "all metal" two core and I can climb the pass at 75mph (about 4 miles at 2-6psi boost), with the A/C on max and never see more than 2/3 on the gauge. Gary P.S. from what I've been able to find only the turbo cars with the auto trans got the two rows from the factory, all the rest were singles.
  13. Yep, running too cold is not good, lots of possible problems. But, if your thermostat is working correctly the full time fan shouldn't be a problem. Gary
  14. Not true for the old Subies (assuming it’s the ’87 in his sig), they only have 1 O2 that’s mounted before both cats, so removing them wont change anything. In fact if its a '87 with a non-feedback carb it wont even have an O2. Gary
  15. Try a search for "torque bind", If you dont find what you need I'm sure we can fill in the blanks. Gary
  16. I wanted to take the pic at 100mph but the conditions weren't right, Whole story here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=37232&highlight=All_talk Gary
  17. Hey Brain, Yep it was me, I always feel silly introducing myself by my screen name. It was great to meet you and chat about stuff. I kinda wish I had brought the RX, the SS looks real good (the RX is a bit of a beater) but the RX is a lot more fun and I could have taken it out in the dirt. Gary
  18. No, no, thats a 3. Over 303,000 now. Gary
  19. Yep, it was great, lots of cool Subies and great people. I wish I could have stayed longer, there were a lot of board members I wanted to talk with, but just didn’t get a chance, I really enjoyed those that I did meet. Next year I’ll have to try and be there the whole weekend. And I have to give a special thanks to Laurel, Art and the rest of the LegacyCentral crew for the spot to sleep on Friday night. Gary
  20. Yeah, push. Pull or drag. Does MS use the TPS for anything other that transitional throttle enrichment? Should cruse fine, right? Gary
  21. I've had a change of plans and I'll be coming down very late on Friday night, probably about 1:00AM, can I get in? will the gates be locked? I have an offer to take a space in someones tent so I shouldn't need a camp site, but if something goes wrong could I get one? Gary
  22. I have read that too, I think its because the built up contaminates in the old fluid provide more friction for the clutch packs, but I could be remembering that wrong. Gary
