1996 Impreza Brighton 2-door. 5x7 speakers in the rear deck?
CoupedUpSubie replied to kickascii's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe speakers in the rear deck should be 6.5" on a coupe. If they are any other size then it was modified to fit them.

Trans cooler lines
Would they be metal if it was installed after the car was made? I haven't looked at it yet. I'm just looking for as much info as I can so I know what I am looking for and what not, first time really dealing with an A/T.

Trans cooler lines
A friend of mine has a leak from the trans cooler lines by the cooler. The car is a 97 Legacy. I have seen people say that 5/16" hose. Can I easily replace this without jacking the car up? I have been able to fit under every stock height subaru I have worked on. Also is there anything I should do to prevent air binding or proper filling of the lines?

Buying a new (to Me) Subaru. Need advice please, and maybe a carfax if possible.
CoupedUpSubie replied to Nbe1210's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTorque bind is pretty evident. First subaru I drove with it I knew automatically what it was based on others description. If it drives and turns like a 4wd truck with locked differentials then it has torque bind. Possible easy fix is changing the transmission fluid a couple times then putting some good stuff in. If that doesn't fix it then it requires a new transmission.

2000 RS stereo build questions
CoupedUpSubie replied to ettev's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have 6.5" sony xplods in my 95 coupe. The only trouble I ran into was mounting the speakers in the rear deck. Have a drill with a small bit handy to make your own pattern. When you pull the door speakers leave the spacers there as you should be able to reuse them with the new speakers.

tire size question

97' Impreza Outback A/C blows hot air
CoupedUpSubie replied to palfer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOnce you open the A/C system (or any system using refrigerants) it needs to be pulled down extremely deep to remove as much moisture and air as possible. Most shops will pull down 29 inches of vaccum(almost perfect). This will allow the system to operate at full capacity and for much longer. Short answer: Unless you have your EPA 609 certification and the proper equipment, take it to a shop. If you have no idea what a EPA 609 cert is then take it to a shop.

1999 legacy air con not working
CoupedUpSubie replied to yewman's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOnce you get all the o-rings replaced and everything back together you will need to have a shop do the recharge unless you happen to have the equipment. Recharging an A/C system that has been opened up without bringing it to a vacuum and properly recharging it will result in a system that lasts for a short amount of time. Along with replacing the gaskets I would go ahead and find out how much it costs to replace the oil in the compressor. Make sure you use the specified oil as the oil and refrigerant need to be compatible.

Changing front ball joints - any tips?
CoupedUpSubie replied to J A Blazer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSpray all the bolts down PB Blaster or whatever you find works the best. If you can't remove the bolt with relative ease you may need to heat the spindle in that area. Make sure to remove the boot and clean up as much grease as you can to prevent a fire. The bolt may not be good anymore. Make sure your new ones come with bolts as they are grade 8 metric and are hard to find in some areas.

ej22 Performance Upgrades
Automatic or manual transmission? If its a manual just down shift when needed. One thing you can try is removing the intake silencer(white jug in the passenger fender) as it gave me a bit more pull over 3k rpm. If that doesn't help you can always get a set of delta cams for it. As for the K&N filters fouling the MAF, I don't believe that for one second. 2 reasons: 1. K&N put out a notice saying that their filters do not harm MAF sensors when properly oiled. 2. I have been running a K&N filter for over a year now with no problems.

97 impreza high idle??
CoupedUpSubie replied to 97preza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhich engine does it have? As that could help also. I know the 1.8L has an device that controls the idle under air conditioning load, that could be what is causing yours.

Downside to 3.9 ratio
CoupedUpSubie replied to ShawnW's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNot sure how much of a difference 200 rpm makes. I calculated engine speeds at 60 mph and thats what I found for a difference between the two transmissions. The 4.111 trans will have your car doing 61 mph at 2700 rpm. Compared to 64 mph with the 3.9 trans at 2700 rpm.

2003 outback ?overdrive?
CoupedUpSubie replied to timmib's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI am assuming it is a Legacy Outback. Based on the gear ratios of your transmission you have 3 options. Don't drive 80 mph all the time. Or Put 32 inch tires on your car. Or Swap in a transmission from 99 Legacy or anything with the same transmission.

EJ18 Question
CoupedUpSubie replied to Diablo9420's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe ticking is most likely the hydraulic lash adjusters. Over time they will stop functioning due to being dirty. As far as cleaning them I am not sure as I haven't had to do it yet. I'm sure someone on here can point you in the right direction.

Wow! Tire won't come off?
CoupedUpSubie replied to UMT's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRemember when you put the lugs finger tight to spin the wheel and double check them all and make sure the wheel isnt floppping around as that could easily lead to a bad day.

EJ18 Question
CoupedUpSubie replied to Diablo9420's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe oil pressure switch can leak sometimes also. It's right under the alternator. $7 at NAPA. There is an adapter that goes into the block before the sensor that may come out with the sensor.

My tires are too big.
Those coilovers wont directly bolt to your car. The rear strut tops have a slightly larger bolt pattern to them. You can slot the holes to make them fit. Otherwise I recommend going with a set of KYB GR-2/Excel-G struts. http://www.ebay.com/itm/KYB-GR-2-STRUTS-SUBARU-LEGACY-OUTBACK-1995-may-1998-/390384445113?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1997%7CMake%3ASubaru%7CModel%3ALegacy%7CSubmodel%3AOutback+Limited%7CEngine+-+Liter_Display%3A2.5L&hash=item5ae4b9e6b9&vxp=mtr Reuse your strut tops if they are still good.

Slip-on off-roading?
Only thing that will hold up to the stresses of offroading is going to be an actual tire. That being said, anything that you put on your tires to aid in traction is subject to breaking. If you plan on going off the road then I would suggest a tire that has good reviews for both on the road and off. They are out there just not sure what the choices are for you in Australia.

Hood question
CoupedUpSubie replied to tidd1340's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you need a new one then it has to be a 93-96. I don't think they made them with the vents and scoop during those years though so it will be a plain hood.

Werid noise. video.
CoupedUpSubie replied to Suba_GL_87's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI listened again and the noise is dependent on the engine speed so I would lean towards piston slap or HLAs if it has them(I can't recall which engines they used them in).

Werid noise. video.
CoupedUpSubie replied to Suba_GL_87's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe coil is going to have a very high resistance. OL sounds like overload, possibly a problem with your meter. It also looks as though it is putting out plenty from when you took the wires off. Jumping 1/4" with a strong arc is good in my opinion. Check your plug wires to make sure they are good. Also look at your plugs. Check gap and condition. If its nothing in the electrical department then internals is what your looking at. You do have 260k miles on it.
