Need help placing a value on my subie.
rllywgn replied to Singlecoil's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
they dont consider mechanical replacements for value.. doesnt matter how much you spent fixing it honestly... car isnt gonna run without a motor, there was one there from the factory.. what you do get credit for, if it was damaged, is aftermarket accesories (custom wheels, stereo's, etc.) it sucks... yes.. try to look through advertisements find the highest selling comprable models and show them that.. they usually base on market value of same or similar vehicles good luck rllywgn -
im gonna have to search for the compression tester but if it helps let me know.. rllywgn

why can't i find my radiator ground wire?
rllywgn replied to skinnyhb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
don't cut your fan shroud! it's there for more then just safety... if you got a two row radiator or the "heavy duty" single row that may account for clearance issues or perhaps if the radiator is for an automatic tranny car.. when i installed a two row, i rubbed it against the fins... bent some around but no problems.. it's really tight getting it in with the mechanical fan in place.. rllywgn -
yes... gret work.. nice to see a project shape up rllywgn

Aftermarket Gauges
rllywgn replied to SyntheticBlinkerFluid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
call me crazy but i drilled a hole through the back of the spare tire carrier... with the glove box out you can see where the firewall humps in for the spare. I knocked it from the inside with a screwdriver then drilled it through the outside... the oil line runs into the center air vent, then out a small hole above the glove box, then through the firewall... im on a tight budget so i worked with what i had.. rllywgn -
Aftermarket Gauges
rllywgn replied to SyntheticBlinkerFluid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
heres mine... wal-mart bought Equus gauges in a homemade gauge pod.. rllywgn -
most manufacturers recommend 92 or higher octane fuel for turbocharged vehicles. the increased octane combats detonation better in turbo cars. you increase the chance of knock under full boost. i dont wanna blow my motor, i know running premium is gonna help that little bit.. every little bit helps right also.. if your the type that keeps the weight on the go pedal and the boost at full steam you may want to run only 92 or higher rllywgn

just need some reassurance here.
rllywgn replied to skinnyhb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i personally have never taken a subaru to a mechanic. This message board is all I've ever needed. theres employed subaru technicains on here and just about every insight to automotive knowledge under the sun. As stated above everything you listed is very do-able for most novice mechanics. instead of dropping 2300 in to what sounds like a solid car, do it in a weekend for a few hundred bucks.. i do hope you choose the latter and save a stack of cash rllywgn -
thinking of re-painting rx
rllywgn replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
2 stage paint, 2 qts color and 2 qts reducer will yield a gollon of sprayable color should be able to cover the car, door jams, and trunk area. unless your going for some heavy coating, single stage paint, you should just need a gallon of this, no clear coat required medium gloss finish unless you really go all out color sanding. im doing the rattle can spray job on mine... (my are hurts from color sanding) and some of those rust converters seem to do well... i only had a few spots though.. rllywgn -
the whole "bodykit" will fit with some modification, not to bad though. if its the passenger side fender that your replacing... you may have a little fun and remove your lower intake box.. some other tricks go along with that but... it opens up some more airflow rllywgn

turbo motors have lower compression then non turbo's... but anythings possible, just cant run as much boost as a factory turbo system without modifing pistons, heads and fuel system... the dual range transmission is swappable into almost any ea82 subaru, but as stated above the turbo's do have a different spline count then the non turbo models.. its a combination of parts from both car to make the conversion work... good luck and happy offrooing rllywgn

Why NOT to use a forklift to lift a car!
rllywgn replied to RallyKeith's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my question is why... thats it... why? as in why not a yugo or some other *&!$box rllywgn -
Mounting extra speakers/cutting holes in doors
rllywgn replied to hondo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
didnt wagons have speakers in the rear doors? but, they will have poor imaging as said. on my old wagon i made some contoured wood blocks (covered in fabric), which allowed me to install aftermarket speakers at an angle suitable for better imaging and sound quality. rllywgn -
Best way to warm up a turbo Soob.
rllywgn replied to Gl-boost's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
turbo's arent to much different from any car... warm it up for a few minutes like any car... I would say dont get to heavy into the go pedal until your oil pressure levels out... psi is quite high on start up... its cooldown to be concerned with... after hard driving give your car a couple minutes idling to cool down. it will allow the fluids to cool some while there still flowing. hot oil can gum up a turbo with immediate shutdown after hard driving.. rllywgn -
XT and XT6 wheels; how many lugs
rllywgn replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

VIN # on Dash....Quick question!!
rllywgn replied to LiftedHatchSubie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
vin tampering is technically illegal. only a state inspection can modify vin plates.. if they see that its been removed or messed with it could make it an absolute nightmare to license your vehicle... this has happened to me... it sucked rllywgn -
XT and XT6 wheels; how many lugs
rllywgn replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if the xt6 has a complete suspension in the front and rear disks... grab them and the wheels and do the five lug swap... opens up a world of wheel options usually can be done for 150 in jy parts with the exception of wheels rllywgn -
not all cracks you'll be able to see, but looking down the ports both on the exhaust and intake you may be able to see something.. ive done about a half dozen heads now.. but never seen leaking from the weep hole. possible crack in the exhaust side.. do you know why they sold it or why it sat for so long? rllywgn
