Typos fixed. You always get me with those lol. But yea, same lousy timing belt setup.. I guess there would be no benefits haha. I know the muscle car guess love the long rod/destroker setups, it makes up for poorly flowing heads (relative).

I have them all the time.. I've never taken apart an ea71 motor. Would the crankshaft fit in a ea82 block? Effectively destroking from 67 to 60mm? Would never do this, but my ADHD won't let me forget the idea. I searched like crazy but all I can find is vague info regarding a prototype motor (dubbed ea72)?!? Edit: typos fixed

12 forged ej205 pistons ordered, hopefully those will arrive within a week or so. 3 sets ended up being cheaper than 2, never hurts to ask when buying parts.

I give that car an award: A little plaque

You won't get any caster from the washer mod. With coilovers (small spring/perch) you potentially would have some room to rotate the caster forward some tho. Caster will add stress to the ball joint too (negligible?).. Basically the trick is to weld 2 large washers (or some steel plate) to each side of the crossmember. Then redrill the control arm mounting hole, effectively moves the control arm out some. The added benefit is that when you go 5 lug, you won't be forced to run toe-in or cut/modify the outer tie rods. I'll pull a couple crossmembers and take some pictures. My first 3 door formula up front was: washer mod turbo cross member XT4 steering rack + tierods (the XT rack does require a DIY bracket + bushing, but its easy to do) 1995ish legacy front spindles/brakes GD OBS struts/springs 19MM swaybar The front end feel was drastically improved. The washer mod and spindles allow for plenty of camber upfront. Note: This isn't the only formula that works upfront. Do some research on tie rods and steering racks, its all be done before and documented on this forum. On my next RX build, I am going to try fitting a STI rack and possibly spindles, with the bolt in wheel bearings. STI with modded 5x100 hubs or late model legacy.. The STI wheel bearings are much much much stronger tho. Edit: Actually just look at Nico's build.. he shows the washer mod here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/126559-retro-gl-10-turbo-build/?p=1218925

OEM gasket arrived at gasket to go in Thailand safely, invoice paid for 6 gaskets! I went ahead and asked them to open up the 4 coolant jackets and also increase the bolt holes to 13mm.

Dat B pillar, its throwing my mind for a loop. I knew a rallycross guy who cut the top off of his XT (caged). They made him pin in a piece of sheet metal above his head per the safety rules.

Whining noise in all gears in 1994 Loyale
Ibreakstuff replied to Kris79's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Could just be the throw out bearing (whirls but only when the clutch is not pressed in), how old is your clutch? I ask because if is just a TO bearing, you might be able to delay replacing it until your next clutch job. It may get louder.. it may not. Worst case it could lock up and prevent the shift fork from being able to disengage the clutch. But it shouldn't really cause more damage. So my advice would be, drive it until it gets worse! Good luck, hopefully she doesn't leave you stranded anywhere. ps- I am not a certified mechanic, I just had a weird feeling it could just be a noisy TO bearing.. -
I had some minor full lock rubbing issues with GD struts in my first 3 door, but a BFH, angle grinder, and cutting off some of the long screws (accessories mounted to the strut tower itself) inside the strut tower gave enough clearance. Mine seemed to just need the bottom edge of metal bent over and smoothed out, this would probably vary from car to car. Some may not rub at all. How you slot the upper strut holes will make it rub more or less as well. And obviously camber plates can allow you to center the strut in the tower, but there may be a trade off in camber/caster to avoid rubbing.. I did noticed that it had more room once I did the washer mod to the engine crossmember too. The extra ~1" of trackwidth helps the front end geometry tons imho.

Whining noise in all gears in 1994 Loyale
Ibreakstuff replied to Kris79's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Does the whine happen ever at all while coasting or clutch in? Or is it speed specific? Same noise when turning? Is it a whirl or a rumble? -
Yes the MLS project should be fun, some 3g63 equiv pressures would be fun! I'll definitely pickup a trigger wheel then, thx for the advice. Damn! I guess my idea of stiff is relative lol but I do drive the potholes of SF and the dirt roads of the sierras. If I may ask, what diameter is the twe header? I was planning 1.75" up and 3" down/out. Stupid ARP has failed me on several occasions to find off the shelf studs in other sizes. They absolutely refuse to release a master list. I have something in the works tho, I'll make a post when parts arrive. What do you think about waterless coolant? I've been reading up on Evans coolant, might keep the hotspots in the heads down to a minimum. And prevent presurizing the coolant. And that sounds like a damn fine plan for the project! Will would be proud for sure. The good ones always get taken too soon.

ACL 4B8291 (rods) ACL 3M8294 (mains) King bearings are comparable imho. GL! And there are still some in std/oversizes still to be found, try amazon.

You should like that size nicely, should be like rails vs the stockers. Esp with a stiffer suspension, I ran ~200lbs front and back in my first 3 door and 19/20mm sways. My 225/45/17's were a bit too meaty for the car imho, in 15" makes more sense. Lol we will see, I am 4-5 weeks out on the MLS gaskets. And I have yet to build a MS wiring hardness. Oh and I have to build a header to mate with a 1.75" ej uppipe and I suck at welding. I'm building 2 RX's atm too lol, I've found that you break less parts when there is a spare of said part.. So maybe the whole car will never break now. That sucks, I've referenced his posts no less than 1000 times with searches. I wish I would have met him. Rallyruss, the guy that got me hooked on ea82's, always spoke highly of Will. When I go, hopefully it's in a subaru and its a solo ride into the sunset.
-
What sized tires are those? I ran 225/45's on my first 3 door with 06-07 wrx rims, no rub in the rear but the rim itself only had a few mm clearance with the rear trailing arm. Looking good btw, your definitely going to beat me to turning the key. Keep up the good work! Love the WJM quote, did Will pass away or what happened to that guy?

What happens over 6500rpms? Does the piston velocity hit 88 mph, then all the internals go back to the future? (jk) Good luck with your build, I wish you many smiles and many miles. Smiles first.

Looks like rebushing for 23mm will work fine (tho its not ideal). Gotta find some rod bolts, the oem ones have are scary as hell.. I found another 2680 square dish piston from a somewhat local company (Icon pistons IC638C) .010 or .038 over so I can hone to PW spec. I may return/cancel my manley order and give them a try.

How the hell did this happen?

This post is classic and brings a smile to my face. We can't save them all, but we will sure as hell try! -

Ibreakstuff replied to shoebee2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This happens more than you think. Yea, I slept on the couch for a few nights when my gf found out I was stashing 6 cars in the neiborhood/storage. I had to sell 2, to thin the herd. -
I figured they were pugs, but I had never seen this type before. I'll likely blast and paint them and keep them for whenever I need a 4 lug roller.
-
Pugs? These came with a 87 RX, which is still in storage.. Didn't even notice the wheels when I bought the car. Also came with a strange 3" fully welded exhaust and a custom vf7 flanged downpipe w/divorced wastegate+wideband. I wish I could find the owner that did all the mods, to see what all he did to it. It has some really faded rallitek and subiesport stickers and they blacked out all of the grey trim. Carfax shows 10 owners since 1992 lol.

Lifters will not come out of ea82 head!
Ibreakstuff replied to mudduck's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They spin but won't pop out? Try a little blue wrench around the cup. Or put the whole head in the oven at the lowest setting for an hour, then shoot some canned air upside down on the HLA to freeze it.
