How do i lift my 85 subaru gl wagon?
Okay now settle down, we are all entilted to our opinions, I have to say I think that a 9-12 inch lift is kind of ridiculous for a first timer. At the same time it's not that great of an idea to say "then you may die" and "life insurance will not solve the problem you have created" it's better to take a humble approach and say "IMHO I think a 9-12 inch would be dangerous and a risk that would not be advisable." Just my $0.02

80 gl 1600 4wd 130k
Okay hatch has been gutted except the rear axles and the torsion bar arm, I couldn't get them out, but I did switch out the cone washers with my bad ones. Now my napa brake caliper is sticking causing a brake drag good thing I've got more calipers, its time to start pulling the fronted apart and get everything fixed Got new rims on my car now, but I need to get some pug lugs for them. I've also got two different size tires front to rear so I need to get a matching size for the rear.

Shaking only after warm up
mikaleda replied to axgutt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell a basic inspection of the front end would be a good place to start, jack up the front end and wiggle the tire top to bottom side to side,There should be little to no play. Check cvs bu grabbing the axle shaft and see if it will turn back and forth in the cup, again with the front off the ground, it shouldn't move at all. If that all checks out then I would suggest checking the motor/trany mounts out. Seems weird that it only does it when warm, that might suggest wheel bearings or c.v. so try checking it cold and then after it warms up and starts doing it again.

91 Legacy wagon inquire
mikaleda replied to Indy452's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI bought my 90 legacy 2.2 for $950 211k mint condition interior engine soild as a rock. My mom bought a 91 legacy 2.2 250k for $650 ran great needed struts, I would talk him down a bit, that's a lot of miles it might need a head gasket soon of it hasn't had one yet. Things to look for, head gasket failure: warm it up drive it a bit, leave it running and pop the coolant resivour cap, if there is bubbles there is likely a head gasket problem. Check for tourqe bind if its an awd turn in a tight circle and it should turn with little to no throttle. Autos are acctually stronger than the sticks in these cars so that will be a plus, but 91 has a TSB for an inline filter before the trans cooler find out when that was done and when the timing belt was done.

Exhaust question - donut gasket replacement
mikaleda replied to vasy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThey are all the same really it's just a donut gasket, that's the reason for the springs so you don't over tourqe the gasket and break it, wich would be very easy to do with just a nut bolt setup.

Oh and remove the y-pipe when doing this, you won't be able to do it right other wise. Y-pipe removal is fairly straightforward just the nuts on the bottom of the head and the connection after the cattilitic converter oh and there is a hanger near the cat. End one bolt that's it. it wouldn't hurt to change the gaskets while your there just for peace of mind.

Stock Ride Height
Gl higher trim level than dl basically the gl's were a little nicer, more Crome, nicer gauges, seats, stuff like that. Your 87 is around when they started making changes to the body style, going from the ea81 body to the ea82, you probably also have struts in the back instead of a torsion bar. I don't know if that's why it's taller or if someone put some taller struts in it.

DCJ 306 Carb Questions
Ya I think the newer ones had the removable sight glass, it makes it easier to rebuild them because you can soak the bowl without hurting the glue for the sight glass

Fan slider blowing fuses
mikaleda replied to ron2368's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEasy way to tell is look for a speedo cable coming off the trans, if it has a VSS there will be no cable coming up from the trans and through the firewall.

DCJ 306 Carb Questions
There are two kinds of sight glasses on these hitachies, my 80 has the soild eyeglass, but some other years had a removable sight glass with two screws and a gasket.

Fan Switch, 84 Turbo Wagon
Ya thermo switch with a relay would be the best way unless you have a large stock of electric fans and you don't mind changing them a lot

back to the dark side
Yep, first gen Lego sounds like what your looking for, plenty of power and still gets 25-28 with awd! You could get better milage with a fwd probably. They can be gotten nice around 1k and put a set of outback struts in it and you got the clearance you want.

How do i lift my 85 subaru gl wagon?
They only stock 175-70-r13 up here you can't get any other size, and I haven't seen thirteens in a junkyard in years. 13's are getting hard to find anymore.

How do i lift my 85 subaru gl wagon?
You should check out the off road section, there is lots of info in there. A 9-12 inch lift is going to take a lot of work, first you going to have to make a way to adjust caster camber wich is non adjustable on these subies. Next part of that lift will have to be body or your going to be going through c.v.'s and ujoints like mad. why such a big lift? These cars are very capable offroaders with a 2-3 inch lift, wich would be easier and probably be more feasible. Most likely lift that you would be able to do for cheap and easy, would be strut blocks. Do some searching in the offroad section, I believe I have seen a thread that gives pretty detailed instructions on making these with offset for correct caster camber. Definatly take a look in offroad and do some reading before you make a post, so you can have a fairly good idea of what you want and are capable of doing.

Throwout/clutch release bearing needed
What engine and trans do you have? Check rockauto.com they tend to have parts that most parts stores don't, but Unless you know you have a low milage clutch it's best to just replace the whole thing so you don't have to do it twice.
