  1. Depending on the transmission style it could be 2 different things. Early 99's have the old kind of transmission and late 99's have another. If you have a filter on the side of your transmission its the later tranny. If you can't see a black filter on the side of your transmission, your filter is in the pan and I have yet to see one that is badly clogged or clogged enough to cause problems on these. The later 99's do not have a brake band. How many miles are on the trans? Did this start after a trans fluid change? Is the fluid a nice red color or is it black or really clear/clean? (short for MORE INFO NEEDED).
  2. SORRY. WRONG. You can't replace sleeves on Subaru engines they are part of the casting. The last engine that Subaru made that allows you to do this is the 1400, made in the 1970's. Block is worth scrap value now. Get a new one.
  3. Subiegal is SPOT ON. No way to tell other than lifting the car up and looking and even then it can be a guess. Likely candidates on any ej engine, some may not apply to your model: Rear cam seal (PITA on ej22 Turbo) Plastic breather plate warped on the back of the engine. These came and went and came back repeatedly for some odd reason. There are now 3 versions of the breather plate out there. Plastic, aluminum and now steel (chrome in appearance!) Cam seals on the front/crank seal/oil pump leaking. Power steering pump or rack leaking CV Boot(s) torn Transmission output shaft seals leaking (not real likely) Incorrect crush washer used/re-used when changing oil Incorrect or loose oil filter
  4. Justy Radiator! FINALLY something off a Justy is useful.
  5. 99 and later Subaru cars have 8 fasteners holding the engine to the transmission on their bellhousings.
  6. 6.0 displacement vs 2.5 is just amazing. Go Subaru!!! Gotta admit I do like the Yellow paint on the GTO though, but if I had 33,000 dollars lying around I would probably have the $ to get it painted.
  7. The 96's have their own 1 year only gaskets as you found out. The ones you have are 97/8/9 model years. Take yours into the dealership and I bet they would trade them out. Im a big fan of the 96 DOHC engine. The Hyd lifters alone are worth it but on top of that they used a nicer piston than the 3 years following.
  8. search our forums for ball seat adapter
  9. You stay young when you hit pull a part yards every day! Happy B-Day ed. Ill leave the math to you, unlike some people that seem to think at your old age you cant deduct their current age from yours to see how much older you are than them. I am only 29. Probably another fountain of youth...hang out with young people and you stay that way.
  10. Tell parts guy its an 84 GL Wagon 4wd. Otherwise post a parts wanted in the classifieds here on USMB.
  11. S-Wings Stuff sells the crank gear kit. Call 303-777-8658. Ask for Mike and tell him Shawn sent you. When the engine actually fails, have it rebuilt.
  12. Hex plug that you might be looking for is just to the right of the T fitting for the PCV crankcase breather plate. Be careful that hose is really brittle and hard to get out...if you can avoid removing it do.
  13. Jeff please lay off of Russ until he makes it to Washington. Thats a long drive and any bad karma he can avoid before the trip is probably appreciated.
  14. 1-Old Waterpump style 2-New Waterpump style 3-81 and older 1600===Higher Compression Pistons (true 1600 pistons) 4-82 and up uses 1800 pistions 5-FE version 6-Air suction valve variations 7-EGR Pipe setups-2 per head vs 1 on the pass side head Bellhousing variations on top of that!
  15. Complicated for a Subaru even. You need shims that go under the sleeves like a VW air cooled engine had.
  16. Finally made it. Car is an 83. Mine is more of a looks kit to most of you, I won't be hard core wheeling it but its not afraid of dirt, gravel, snow, rallycross etc but I won't trail it hard EVER due to the time I have into the car. Mods: Ej22 conversion. 88 5spd RX Ft4wd trans/difflock (not hooked up yet) with LSD rear. 4" full frame lift kit with 3" strut spacers. 14" pug alloys with Cooper Discoverer 195 75 R14 tires. Bedliner rolled onto the bottom for an "Outback" look. Cyclops light installed Roof basket originally built for a Jeep TJ modified to fit the Subaru (and my Vanagon when asked nicely). SteelDel Brushguard that I have owned since like 1999 or so, mounted on like the 5th car I have owned so far. Grey Brat seats. Full stereo install, 4 door speakers and a thumper. Snow photo taken near Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70. From Red Rocks meet taken by Keith:
  17. Yeah its very doable just find another Legacy with them and bolt em on. Skip the turbo legacys though the rotors are expensive to replace later.
  18. Sweet project. I am really glad to see more people doing the old VW conversions with pushrod Subaru engines.
