The rims are sweet! Honestly it looks a little funny sitting that high with such small tires. I would consider either lowering it a bit or going with taller tires. Since it's just for scooting around the street and sitting in a garage I see why you dont want big tires. Is the suspension cranked up? Maybe you could drop it a bit there. Just my humble opinion

3speed auto to 5speed D/R Conversion
MorganM replied to corbone's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Should be pretty straight forward swap with an example GL10 sitting there, a donor and the project vehicle. Note the arrow on the transmission corssmember when installing that -
those rims are sweet. so with those tires when are we going offroading?

THanks for the info. I was hoping there was a Fuji Heavy Ind. snow plow

I'm glad this got bumped. I was just talking to someone about these the other day. Anyone have info on the plows that were offerd on "new" subarus back then? Was this just a limited dealership deal? How rare are they? What do they go for if you do find one? Thx

My father in law was talking of something similar. He said Subaru was kind of desperate to get dealerships set up. They would front you pretty much everything you needed to get off the ground if you would just sign the line and sell the damn cars. Sounded like a pretty sweet deal at the time but also a big risk.

This is prolly why Subaru advertisment department droped Paul Hogan, the Crocidile Dundee image, and "The world's first sport utility wagon" slogan after a couple years. People started thinking they were Austrailian and forgot they were Japaneese! I thought that who marketing campaign was pretty good. Not long after they came out with this campaign I really started seeing Outbacks pop up all over. Too bad ppl assumed they were from Austrailia just cuz some stereotype Austrailian fictional character promoted them

anyone need parts from 85 GL wagon
MorganM replied to n7zum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ack I'm sorry I meant the front! I'll assume same situation; no rust? Also can you judge how worn out the actual strut cartraige is? Mine are rusted out bad! Thanks -
Just take off the shifter knob as a self reminder You can still use it if you are in a low traction situation (mud, snow or dirt road) and you just might want it then!

How rusted out and old are the rear strut assemblies? -
I honestly dont buy into the argument that synthetic oil will 'leak more' on older engines. When I bought my Buick Regal it had a 1972 cadillac engine rebuilt some time in the 1980s. It had 110,000 miles on that rebuild when I got it. I put another 20,000 on it. Not long after getting it I switched to Valvoline full synthetic oil. I opted for this since that engine runs HOT and synthetic oil stands up better at higher temps befor breaking down. Befor I switched from standard oil to syntehtic the engine consistantly sweat enough oil to leave a small (4" ? ) wet spot when parked overnight. After switching to full synthetic it no longer left any spot of oil. I'm not claiming it fixed any leak (which I could obviously tell it still did sweat some) but it most certainly did not leak any more then standard oil. This idea that synthetic oil will make leaks worse or cause the engine to leak is a remnent of when synthetic oil first came out. While it is still a remote possible out come of switching from standard to syntehtic it's honestly nothing to worry about in EA82 Subaru engines http://www.bestsyntheticoil.com/amsoil/seals.shtml

O2 sensor install help on my 90 Loyale
MorganM replied to ilogan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I bought an O2 sensor socket. It's slick and you can use your breaker bar. This puppy is gonna be in there SOLID! Worth the $6 to me. It's even easier then reading the directions Drop exhuast from heads, unscrew O2 sensor, screw in new one, plug in and go! Might have to reset your computer to clear the ECM of the error code. -
I'm pretty skeptical about funny things like this. There was obviously a problem. ATF in the crank case didnt fix it. It simply masked the issue untill the real problem was discoverd. As noted it wont really damage anything but is it really better than using something meant to go in your oil? I'd rather use a cleaning product already noted as safe to put into your oil (like SeaFoam) then 'well i heard from this dude you can pour ATF in!' to clean out dirty lifters

Hind sight is 20/20 and looking back on my Subaru offroad project I would have started totaly different. It would have been WAY easier starting with a CLEAN 4WD dual range subaru and a blown up motor. Motor swaps are a piece of cake compared to installing 4WD or hundreds of hours of body work. Unfortunatly I didnt start with this whole project in mind. I bought mine as a winter beater one year and fell in love I say you find yourself a clean 4WD body to start with. It will be much easier and you will be happier for far longer. Anything with little rust and dual range will get you set up to make a fun offroad toy. Good luck!

that's so custom. the fact you did all that yourself far out weighs any thoughts of ugly welds
