Sounds like the Toy Tacoma would better suit your needs vs. an Outback. A Subaru that would suit your needs I would suggest a late 80's GL with 4WD dual range, a 3" lift, and bigger rims + tires. Just one of many opinions

Sorry I spent all night removing, cutting, fitting, and welding up my new exhuast with Archemitis lastnight and didnt' get a chance to look over the wiring. Hopefully I will have time tonight. Maybe someone with an FSM could look before then

Yes only on EFI models. You said MAF so I assumed you were talking about an EFI model... Still would check out your fuel pump back there.

Help for no power and declining mpg's
MorganM replied to deuce's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No problem. Swap in a new O2 sensor and see how she rides. Just a simple one wire sensor; should be cheap. Easy enough to replace also. Worst case you'll have to drop the Y pipe down off the engine to get access to it. I use a special O2 sesnor socket but a big wrench works too -
Can't recall straight from memory... if nobody answers today I'll look at my SPFI ignition amp setup when I get home. Correct however; it does ground through the bracket.

That really depends on the yard. Around here nobody will pay you anything for a car to be hauled off to the junkyard. Some will 'do you a favor' and take it for free. I actually had to pay $50 to get a junkyard to take my "free" Loyale. Slowly but surely I'm realizing the old statment.... nothing in life is free

To answer your question about the MAF's location. Look directly at your throttle body. Follow the rubber air intake snorkel over to the air box. At the end of the snorkel is a metal coupler with the MAF; has an electrical plug going to it. Basicly you can just swap out the whole top of yoru air intake box to replace the MAF. Dunno if that's really your problem. With all that thrashing around in the gumbo you might have loosend up the wiring at your fuel pump. That is located in the rear of your vehicle, under neath the unibody, behind the rear main crossmember, infront of the rear passanger side tire. You'll see a triangular plate with 3 bolts which has the fuel pump on top. Might want to check that out and make sure the wires are properly secured. Could also be ignition cutting out on you. It's really hard to diagnose this stuff over the 'net. You sound adept at going over your vehicle; check some things out and I'm sure you'll figure out the problem

4 sure. Even if you just nabed the wire harness and ECU from a donor vehicle. It's still gonna be easier to wire it up and do EFI than all the customization it will take for adapting an antiquated fuel delivery system.

Help for no power and declining mpg's
MorganM replied to deuce's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
O2 sensor could be a culprit on the milage. Also running 18deg BTDC is going to kill your acceleration. Did you turn it down for a reason? Might want to address that reason. Backpressure test at an exhuast shop can tell you if the cat is clogged. Real cheap and easy way to fix these cats if they get clogged -
With this new fancy red turbo hood I put on there was the emissions sticker under there. That's where I learned FHI says to run 25deg BTDC for ignition timing for the EA82t that came in that car. This was off an '88 GL turbo wagon I think. Also has the helpfull vacume diagram.... too bad I dont have that engine =P

To keep it or not is completly upto you. Do you like the vehicle? Would you rather have something else? If you keep it; then on to the lift question. Would you need a lift? Do you have the money, time, and tools to build or install a lift? Also have the money required for bigger tires and rims to go with that lift? That's my unbiased analysis of your situation at hand. This is the USMB; of course we are going to tell you to keep it and lift it from our biased, opinionated viewpoint

Awsome JD! That's the Ultimate Subaru Motor Swap  You'll love it! -
Prolly best you left it. Sounds like the guy was trying to scam it off for "free". I just got rid of a "free" Loyale myself; but it was strictly for parts then off to the junkyard. If that's all you wanted out of that Loyale you found then it might be worth yoru time but anyway you cut it; that thing is going to cost you money.

Need Vacumn Hose diagram for Subaru 1985 GL Wagon
MorganM replied to bk2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I wish they all had that but most don't Got a junkyard you could go in and look at one? Solicite those on here with FSMs Also a local dealership will have FSMs on hand and if you ask nice usually they will let you come look at them and even photocopy pages. Not all dealerships will have all the manuals either. Call around as some throw them away, some keep them, all depends by dealership. Good luck! -

Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
MorganM replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, quite possible. Thats one reason I upgraded my bumpers to seemless steel tube and C channel. Two other reasons would be legal tow points and improved approach/depart angles. I'm obviously the vocal minority once again. People seem to like the bumper and think nothing of other consequences. I've said all I need to/should on this topic and shall not be returning to it. G'day -

MorganM replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How about this... you come down on an obsticale, bumper breaks, and then said obsticle stuffs up into your unibody. Body is still damanged and you gotta replace that bumper. What's the point? -
Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
MorganM replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here's some facts to back up my "vague" statments A hollow piece of wood isnt as strong as the stock bumper. The offroad tech inspections I've read call for bolt on tow points using 1/2" grade 8 bolts. There are no legal tow points on that bumper. This would be for I4WDA's anual event and for the Iron Range OHV recreational area. As you state however you wont be going to any official offroad areas or events. This is more to clarify for someone who might think they can get away with this for their ORV. Check your state statutes. In MN your custom bumpers must be as strong or stronger than the stock ones you are replacing. If your state has similar statutes and inspections then well it wont pass so read up. Even if it has similar statutes but no inspections there will be plenty of cops willing to inpsect it for you the first time they see you. Yes, as you asked. Steel would be a better solution! -
Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
MorganM replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I honestly hope thats your trail only vehicle. Unusual is fine but that is down right unsafe if you actually go on the pavement. That definatly wont pass any offroad tech inspection! -
Time for a different muffler
MorganM replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've had a lot of cherry bombs; they sound poor IMHO but hey they cost $15 so you get what you pay for. If you want a glasspack get a Thunderbolt or Bullet. Flowmaster 40's are a good choice also for good sound but not a straight-through glasspack design. -
I really like the idea Raven. Also sounds like you are trying to address the issues at hand.
-
Disposable wooden bumper? That's down right scary man... have that 'welder buddy' get to work and build you something thats safe! Maybe I'm getting the wrong idea of what you are really doing by your post; which is quite possible.
