Stripping Loyale; Logisitcal Problems...
MorganM replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
first person to show up with a trailer can have it this includes title and VIN -
Good triva knowledge but I wouldnt base many decisions or assumptions on short block weights; or even weight of long blocks. Quite alot of extra junk on a full engine assembly vs. a long or short block.

Glad to hear they liked it! I've found the people into offroading are truely about offroad; its not what you wheel but where and how often They enjoy seeing new rigs on the trails and get a kick out of seeing a station wagon out there hitting obsticles. Sure some freindly ribing is expected but to them its all in good fun. The guys that wont even give you the time of day are pansy web-wheelers who are more into the bolt on bling and talking about where they think they could go.... if they actually wheeled it offroad They are more into tearing you down verbaly so that they look that much bigger and badder to all the other wussy web-wheelers. The good thing is you wont find these dorks out on the trails

Great stuff thanks for posting this. Man I've been there before and did that suck. Acutally happend on my wife's Buick also. Funny enough the Loyale I just picked up had it happen also; they rigged out a wire that sticks out the grill attached to the latch.... I just went with hood pins on my wife and I's cars

Wish I had the room to keep it all; I would! I'm such a pack rat as it is; I'll keep as much as I possible can. Somethings just take up loads of space like seats I have a 2 car garage with my wife's buick, my subaru, camping stuff, son's toys, my work bench, spare part racks (yes, racks of spare parts! ) large deep freezer, big old trash can.... you get the point; not much room left. I had a big parts giveaway at my house last month and gave away all my EJ22 / EJ22T parts so I got some room cleared for EA82 parts now. I like the skate/ski idea. I'll prolly just flop her down on some long 2x4's and skid her out enough for the flat bed to winch onto. -

If it was a solid runner I wouldnt have botherd with the tow dolly Its definatly spun a bearing or connecting rod completly disconnected from piston. No oil pressure and a real bad knock. I made it about 20 miles before it gave up on me. With an engine it would be a sweet daily driver. Never seen an old Subaru with interior in this good of shape; I'm talking flawless here. Rust isnt bad either; just in some corners and typical starting points. Can't convince the wife that I should swap all my stuff over to it. Sad that it's gonna get stripped and crushed I was totally seriouse when I said show up with a trailer; it would be required I doubt you really want it as it requires a short block; I have one to put in but I'm not gonna bother. Wife wants it gone ASAP. -
It's the same kit Ozified lift is the BYB lift. As Zapar noted waiting isnt an option That kinda sucks but I understand why. I dunno if Brett would even send over a Legacy kit really. You'd have to ask him to find out. Might just have to go custom !_!

Asphault or concrete? Big difference I could go do a burn out in my driveway and tear up the asphault with rubber tires. On concrete I'd just be leaving tire particles everywhere. I saw the marks on concrete that a stripped XT6 left when Arch had it removed. Looked like it would have gouged asphault This Loyale wont be completly stripped bare; it will still have engine short block, prolly the tranny, all glass, seats, etc. I don't have room to completly strip it. .... maybe if we get a really good snow and some ice Keep the ideas coming guys! I got time to figure something out -
Cooling!!!!! Life and death of your Subaru. Check your radiator fins by looking in the engine bay between the engine and the radiator. Any missing? Corrosiion? Funny looking green color? If any/all of those are true its time for a new one. Also do the thermostat; might be sticking shut or not opening all the way when cycleing. A good radiator cap with purge valve would be wise also; they hold back lots of pressure and can wear out. Purging air from coolant. This takes some patients. Fill the radiator and let it bubble the air out. Keep filling and letting it bubble out naturally (yes elivating the front can help here) Use the lower radiator hose by the battery there as a hand pump to force air out and coolant in. Another little trick is to squeez and hold, pour some coolant in the radiator till its full, then release the hose and it will suck in a bunch of coolant. Once the radiator simply wont hold any more coolant fill your resivouir to the Full mark. This should get all the air out BUT should you have some traped it will make its way upto your radiator the next time you drive around. This means check yoru radiator level and resivour the next time she's cooled off and top off both as needed. Idle speed should be 700 +/- 100 RPMs on EA82 SPFI... so basicly between 600-800. A high idle is normal if the engine is not at full temp. Small vacume leak can raise RPMs @ idel. Maladjusted TPS could cuase higher RPMs. Malfunctioning Idle Air Control (IAC) valve can raise RPMs also. With the SPFI system I would check for vacume leaks and malfucntioning parts before trying to mask the symtoms by adjusting idle speed. That lovely mayonaise subastance is typical. Thats what happens when water and oil mix. Small amounts of it can build up in your PCV system and crank case (also the oil fill cap) Mass quantities of it can be a sign of bad mojo. You also say there's oil up in the coolant resivour? Not looking good but I wouldnt diagnose anything seriouse quite yet. Like you said, compression test is a good idea. Lastly the O2 sensor; last for good reason. More important things to tend to first The special 02 sensor socket can really help but isnt required. A big open ended wrench can do the trick also; leverage is the key to this job. Good luck !_!

Engine block/case gasket

As I was told by Subaru sages of old when I first redid my EA82... don't be sad when it does start "sweating" some oil. It is a Subaru afterall -

Ahhh yes back on topic; thank you. I was thinking of this idea also. Didnt know what would be strong enough to hold upto anything puncturing it and digging into the assphault. What is this... sheathing? Only sheath I know of is the one you keep big knives in -
Where the heck are the grounds?
MorganM replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here are a few under the bonnet: Battery to starter/bellhousing. Unibody to bolt holding water pump inlet tube to cylinder head under alternator Under the coil bracket/ingition amplifier Bellhousing to unibody up under spare tire. -
Call BS all you want bud; its still the truth. It's not like welding the front diff is impossible or never been done before.... Maybe he doesnt belive all the hype and does what he wants to his car; insread of what everyone else thinks he can or can't do?

Here are some Legacy lift solutions for ya Brett lists a 2" and 3" lift kit for Liberty (read: Legacy) Impreza and Forester. You could have one custom built by several different people right here on the USMB. Scorpion makes a '2" lift kit' for EJ series.

Tell me about it man! I had to jump through so many flaming hoops just to rebuild my freak'n deck last year. Between the city statutes/regulations/inspections and the home owners association inpsections/regulations it added days onto the proccess and much more money to the bottom line cost. -
gearing to 4.11 questions
MorganM replied to greggbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was talking on the phone with mudrat79 about similarities between EJ and EA tranny internal parts and assemblies. He too thought most (if not all) of it would swap. Now I dont know if this would necisarily be an upgrade for seriouse offroading unless you retain the 5MT Dual Range's low range reduction gear in addition to the WRX 4.11 drive gear ratio. Would seem to be a superior upgrade for rally/auto-x however in any case. Good stuff !_! -
Nothing about bumpers persay; "tow hooks must be bolted on using 1/2" grade 8 bolts or better". While you could get away with no bumpers on the trail; you wouldnt be street legal.... so it would be a trailer queen The bumpers I have kill both birds with one stone. Bumpers to make me street legal and tow points are bolted on with 1/2" grade 8 bolts.

Prolly just needs some new headlights, grill, and has lots of Brat paint on the bumper -
And out perform an LSD on the trails all day long
