  1. WOW! That's ridiculous. Really, find another mechanic.
  2. Welcome. If you have any questions about your Brat, this is the place to find the answers. Wealso look forward to any specialized knowledge you may have - it doesn't have to be in Subarus either.
  3. Most shops will do it, but they will not guarantee that they will not break your shield in the process of installing it. They should charge you about $50 to install it (which is a rip-off as they charge $16 per hour for autoglass installation and if you're good at it , it takes about 1/2 hour). They really want to sell one of theirs to you.
  4. Since you didn't list what model it is, it's hard to say, but if you run a search on timing belt replacement, you'll find several complete write ups for different applications. That should help.
  5. Pull it in the garage, put an elephant tampon under it (or a large drainpan) and see if you can locate the point of leakage. It sounds like a bad seal or something that may have cracked in the cold. The recent fluid change is somewhat suspicious and the meager amount of miles, unless you've been doing some neutral drop burnouts, should indicate it didn't just suddenly die.
  6. Why would you want to? 4 grand is hish enough to grab the peak of the next gear/ hold the powerband. Unless you just like fixing things.
  7. The ssr's look like aggressive enough tread with the ability to still be managable on the raod.
  8. If you are going to trythe rope method that GD suggests, make sure to start at the bottom in the center and have someone to help you. Your partner should be outside, pushing slightly on the shield to assist in it going in and not shifting around. Pull the bottom rope across and up about an inch on one side , then do the other. Try to keep each side about even as you work toward the top two corners. A soft to medium open handed slap on the shield from time to time will help seat the shield. The top two corners are a bear and there is a twisting motion (kind ofa circular pull) with the rope that will help to get the corners in. A cotter key puller (a hook tool) will help tremendously with pulling the gasket in. Be careful not to hook the glass or have it between the pinchweld and the shield when your partner slaps the shield. If your gasket has a double lip on it, pull the first lip (the outer)all the way in, then work the second one (the inner) in after. Silicone spray works very well as a lubricant. WD40 is all right, but clean up is messy. It should be sealed with eurethane. If there is accent chrome in the gasket, insert it in the gasket before you bring it to the car. Good luck.
  9. That's an interesting roll cage.
  10. The white spokes are nice if you can find a decent set of center caps for them.
  11. I guess I wouldn't be too alarmed about 3 mpg given that the air is considerably colder /heavier in the winter, thus longer warm-up time, less efficiency burning, and more idling time before you take off. Also, the additives in gas in the winter (ethanol and oxygenated fuel) tend to reduce their efficiency also. But, keep an eye on it to see if it continues to slide.
  12. Wow, Qman. It would be cheaper to fly you up here to do a motor swap than to hire a local mechanic. Nice job.
  13. Miles probably has a scale, but it probably only measures grams and ounces.
  14. If you need a plow se up, I know a guy in Anchorage who can set you up with a new 61/2 foot plow, but it'll be spendy.
  15. Golddogger, you've received sound advice from two of the most knowlegable sages on the old school side of the board. If you need help /questions answered in the process, Im sure GD and Turbone will be glad to walk you through it. You're in good hands here. And welcome to the board.
  16. If a guy can't brag about his stable, what's the use in owning them? Looks like you've got a nice collection going.
  17. What do you have, a tuna-flavored key ring?
  18. If you don't have access to a space heater, try using some of those chemical hand warmers. Throw a couple in between layers of clothing.
  19. It needs to be replaced, so when you take it to have it done, make sure to have those replacing it allow you to take pictures of it once they remove the bottom panel (cowling) covering the shield. It sounds like the shield either was set on top of the setting blocks, or they slipped off of them. Either way, it is a problem that was not a user-created problem. Back charge the dealer and let them settle with SOA.
  20. It sounds like you're in the range of normalcy.
  21. How would you like to double you profit? I'll give you $2 for it. Maybe even $5! - Seriously, excellent job. Knowledge is power.
  22. Thanks for remembering me, Paul. Take your time - no hurry. Keep your kids warm and - well do what you want with the mother-in-law.
