  1. if the wiring is good, ie the ecu and harness arn't too narfed up the electronics won't be too bad, but as far as others, the engine mounts should be close enough to work, tranny X-member will have to be fabbed, the driveshaft will have to be either lengthened or shortened, and the front axles will have to be swapped with 23? spline turbo axles, the tranny ratio probably won't be 3.9 so find out what it is and get the same rear diff for it, if you don't it will blow up somthing as the stock 3.7 tries to keep up with the 4.11 or 4.44 from the JDM
  2. do a compression test on the dead cylinder, and find out if its an easy fix, if so you could probably sell the engine for some loot to get part of the 500 back,, the real question is, would it be cheaper to get the whole truck and rear axle if you wanted to put that in the back of your subie; provided its 3.9 or if its cheaper to go to the PAP and pull a t case and driveshafts.

So i was talking to myself about my Subaru and i says to myself, "myself, i wonder if its possible to seperate the 4wd lever and the low range lever on the transmission" the theory is that you could then have a 2wd Low range, which would be great concidering the car is a dog with the swampers, well, it was when it was running, but i'm working on that, so now that i've planted the seed, i'm gonna see what i can do about that, once i get the engine from Paul, hopefully this weekend, Paul you'll be around this weekend right? 18-20?
  4. Yeah, subaru does. Do you want just the gear and Pinion? or do you want the LSD, cause i'll let you in on a little secret, if there was an easier way we'd all be taking it. There are plenty of other makes that use the 3.9, plenty of which have lockers and other better traction aids, but unless you want to fab up a new rear diff or whole straight axle in the back, the LSD is the easiest way to go
  5. Welcome, you might try this in the new gen forum, but to get you started there's SPT, subaru performace tuning, thats factory parts, www.rallitek.com one of the best. Cobb tuning, there is plenty out there, you might even try www.Nasioc.com although they are not as friendly as we are over here, just my bias though.

With the warm up here in Michigan i got the engine out of the 88, it looks like it was the rear main that is letting the oil go, not the O-ring, it all looks good but it could be the blowby past the rings forcing the oil out of what looks like a good seal. BTW congrats on the swap, its always nice to just wrench for a few hours some times.
  7. Am i still on for the engine and harness? and if someone wants to package it up for Paul, so i don't have to drive out for it, i'd be happy to throw in some cash for your trouble.
  8. the RX, its a 3 door coupe. With the center locked its 4wd, with it open its awd, the best of both worlds.
  9. so all's i need are the rotor, caliper and pads?
  10. Do i need different knuckles? This is for the front, not the rear, no bracket up front.
  11. those things seem to judder, or so i'm told check warranty repairs
  12. just a thought, if you go with the RX tranny, the low range is not as steep, 1.19 as opposed to 1.52, but.... some of them come with the full time, and a center diff lock, so you keep the awd but can lock the center when you need to.
  13. Has anyone done the solid front rotor to vented rotor swap? i'm assuming that you need the caliper, pads and rotor, but do you need to swap the knuckle? and on a side note are the vented rotors the same for EA-81 and EA-82? BTW this is for a 1980 GL 1600
  14. as an engineer for airbags, i can say that without a doubt, unless you want to snap your neck, those headrests are absolutely necessary in a collision, unless you're doing this to clean them, i'd highly reccomend that they stay on.
  15. Just want to point out that the Chef uses the bias ply, however still an excellent evaluation. I, like Ken use the SSR Radial, while i wouldn't reccomend them for a daily driver, i swear by them offroad, mine are siped so they don't do too bad on the road either, but keep your distance, stopping is a hit or miss issue, its the weight not the tread thats the biggest issue. They are pretty quiet though, but you will hear the road more somthing about the ticking from the engine having an easier chance from getting out from under the car with the increased space
  16. 2 mafs and 2 tbs will run way, way too rich, the car would be running so far out of its stock parameters that the computer would not be able to compensate, maybe running half fuel pressure could make up for this, but i just don't think it would work
  17. for the wood grain, i'm thinking about seeing about getting it for EA-82 use as well, i don't have a brat near buy, unless Tim? in hillsdale is willing to meet somewhere to take measurements. the theory is that once we have the basic outlines any pattern can be used, darker shade for a two tone, or carbon fiber for the "exotic":lol: look. i'm looking into original suppliers to see what it would take for a limited run, or if'n its even legal, may need to call SOA and get written permission.
  18. why a 2wd ea-81 tank and not a 4wd, are the 4wd smaller, i thought that later they were the same size. oh well
  19. can i get a bigger tank? cause 20 mpg with a 10 gallon tank is not gonna cut it, if i can get a 15.9 to bolt right in that would be great, but i don't know if the EA-81 tanks are the same as the EA-82 tanks, cause the EA-82 tank is the only one i have, but its still attached to the 88 wagon. If not i'll be pricing out fuel cells, should be interesting going into a speed shop and asking if one will fit in the back of my subaru, "no not a WRX" it should get a laugh.

  21. the bolts are different between the ea-81 and 82, you should use the flywheel that came with the engine. IMHO
  22. Went to the dealership today and got an engine manual for the FF-1 1100 and the FF-1 1300G just wondering what year subaru it would go to.
  23. you will need the flywheel and pressure plate from the engine and the clutch from the transmission

So not only did i pick up a mint 1980 wagon, but i went to the dealership today, and showed off quite possibly the oldest subaru in the state, and i got a complete set of EA-81 "woodie" vinyl stickers and 16 cars worth of the rocker pannel stickers made famous by Jarod's monster ru. None that say turbo but i got a bunch that just say subaru, a few less that say 5 speed and only 3 that say 4wd or four wheel drive. EA-81 to the rescue. http://usmb.net/gallery/album309 More Here

Not too much as far as storys go, it was uneventfull, and i like road trips that way, my buddy Craig, who was there for the rescue of the first Subaru in 2001 was here on this trip as well, he got pulled over for following too close in wisconson, no ticket, yay. This is a subie we saw on the way out This is my home town Subaru dealership, about 2.5 hours from home, its where i grew up. And here is what the wagon will look like after an impending paint job, sorry austin, the pull me over yellow is a little bit too much, but it will be on the car for at least 5 months until it warms up Peace out "Flava Flav"
