  1. added bonus is you get rotors with venting so your brakes work cooler. first gen don't have these and warp easily. still got my set from the 84 but has bad rotor..i still have good first gen rotors but when they go bad i will make the swap too
  2. http://flagstaff.craigslist.org/cto/4717802039.html I ran across this little guy...wish i had the dough right now...these look sick when lifted
  3. I have switched both of mine to ea81 and dual range trans. Fairly easy to do with small modifications. the ea71 setup in my opinion is fine for trail cruising or street driving an not much difference in power is noted. but to get up the steep hills and rough country you need the low gear because that engine will bog down fairly easy.
  4. Thats all we are fed these days is unleaded ethanol soaked gas. the time of year and elevation depends on how much they add. When i had the Hitachi it was more troublesome because of the plunger style accelerator pump and all the o-rings. Kit after kit the fuel would eventually swell it up and turn it to mush after a year. that goes for the carter i had on my 62 chevy too. The weber has a diafragm accelerator pump mounted on the side and can be changed without removing or opening up the carb. I have used the cheap holley ones they sell at auto zone and re- drilled the holes and they work fine. when they go bad you will smell and see a fuel leak and that keeps me on top of it. I know there are alot of die hard hi-crotchy carb fans out there but they now are too touchy with the crap gas we are forced to buy these days. My uncle said that back in his day a flat head v8 ford could get 20-24 mph on the real stuff they used. We are a captive audience to oil companies so the more efficient cars get, the more ethanol they add to get their pennies worth. I just pray the day dont come where we can no longer run our carbs on the new fuel mixtures
  5. thanks for the hookup sarge bu i already built one and shes wearing it proudly.
  6. nice work! I still dream of having a first gen coupe someday..got a built 1.6 5 speed combo waiting for her....someday......
  7. wish i could buy the dash cluster....nice score..get what you can off it and make some money on ebay
  8. I have not seen a post like this yet but if i am starting something new i think it may be beneficial in peering into the automotive past of our family be seein what they started driving up to what they now drive, also what led us to a subaru... Here goes 1965 chevy 3/4 ton longbed 327 ci .........(Bought from step dad and he took it when mom kicked him out ) 1974 plymouth fury 4door 360 ci ............. (first car i bought and got to keep) 1971 impala 400 ci small block ............... ( blew rear main seal and died) 1978 dodge 3/4 ton club cab 318 ci........... (ugly rump roast rusted truck that never died..even after catching fire!) 1972 nova 4 door 350 ci ....................... (cam shaft lobes wore out and dismantled car to build the next on the list) 1968 chevy II nova 2dr 89 vette 350 ci with torker manifold and holley 650 power-glide and parts from previous nova 1978 ford fairmont wagon with 302 and 2bbl holley (wife's 6 second grocery getter she used when we first got married) 1978 Chevy luv truck..( work and back to save gas and wear on Nova) 1987 f-150 300 L6 (4.9) 1991 aerostar 4wd Eddie Bauer edition. (replace wifes wagon) 1962 chevy step side 5" lift 350 victor jr intake 33" mudders 1995 f-150 crew cab 3" lift and 31" at..302 fuel injected.....lack of power for this truck...sold it to get first new truck) 2004 GMC Canyon quad cab..3.5 L5 .. (replaced fords..powerful but seats were very uncomfortable) 2005 rav4....wrecked after 8 months of purchase by sister-in-law, fixed as if nothing happend and traded for next... 2006 Suzuki sx4 to replace wifes rav (no balls at all..sold when economy crashed and broke even) 1978 brat..found on craigslist as project for son and i and i was hooked on subaru. lifted 2" upgrade to 1.8 dr trans 1979 subaru wagon 4" lift upgrade 1.8 dr trans 2009 outback sport for wife to replace gmc canyon 1997 impreza sport for daughter..... In a nutshell, I love my old cars and power but unless you got bank they are tough to feed these days. I also love off roading but my 62 would use both 15 gallon tanks in one day of off roading whereas the brat could cross the dessert for a whole day and still have enough gas to get me to work the next day.. I still get the ''Thats cool'' response that i got from my novas, impalas and old trucks, just not from the street outside my driveway when someone passes by the house and catches a glimpse of something too costly to drive. The other reason for having subarus is i refuse to buy anything i cant work on with my ham hands..sideways mounted engines are not welcome in my garage when you have to remove the fender well and a half shaft just to change an alternator. Subys are safe and have an all wheel drive system unmatched by anything as for ease of access for repairs. knowing my wife and daughter are safe when we get our surprise flash floods here in vegas gives me peace as apposed to all other cars that spin out or have erratic front wheel spin outs when shifting. so theres my automotive anthropology..how bout you all?
  9. never been a ford guy either but mercury always made fords look better and that one is sweeeeeet!. the wheels are the best part...i dont know what it is about those white spoke that make them look good on anything from baja bugs to dump trucks but they certainly helped in the branding of Subaru..... I must submit that i once had an 87 f-150 with a 300 L6 it had over 300,000 when i sold it and still runnin strong.. best engine ford ever made. needed a family car so traded in for an 4wd Eddie Bauer aerostar van which was wonderful for the wife to run over curbs, bicycles and the occasional innocent pedestrian... good 4wd van though and she never got stuck anywhere just too big....which led me to a suzuki sx4 which had no balls at all. then i got my 78 brat for fun. loved the boxer rumble so much that i sold the sx4 and my 62 chevy stepside to get wifey and daughter subarus......if there is not a thread here that lists our first to present cars......sort of a personal automotive anthropology for each of us to add, then i think we should start one
  10. that looks sweet ..we did blue led on the brat cluster along with all lights except high beams.. lows are hid...power savings are huge for first gen charging systems that just love to blow glass fuses and tease us with the idea of putting a 22 shell in its place to get home in the midle of the night.....you have a great thread packed with extensive knowledge.i did not know the bumble beast was a family heirloom until i thumbed through your thread...i hope it stays in your family for generations to come.. my brat also now belongs to my son.
  11. been a while but hello to all. some idiot got road rage and brake checked me at an intersection because apparently noone is supposed to get in his lane in his world on his street in his city so he jumped in front of me and slammed em...you know the rest! ruined my park bench bumper and crunched the panel under the grill. got it all back in shape with a come along, 3 pound sledge and my RV trailer hitch. I still cant post pics but built a bush guard and looks even better now...still miss the park bench tho! anyone gotta tip on how to get more disc space so i can post new pics?
  12. Mine always hold up fine. I was sketchy about doing it at first but all was well. just as long as a paper product like the blue is not used. I agree that the original equipment is the way to go but when its your daily driver and you gotta get to work you don't have time to wait for a delivery and these are not readily available auto parts stock. The copper spray is the perfect bond as no beads are formed with an even coating when tightening and dry time is quick. I learned to keep a set of legit ones in my garage at all times.
  13. thats the guy with the 82 cyclopse right? also someone has an 86 turbo brat. when is the next meet? we gotta represent the roots brotha.
  14. Yo Sarge. we gotta recruit more old schools here in vegas. I was Kreepndth on here too but during computer changes and forgetting passwords i got locked out and had to change ID. Really been here since 09
  15. keep in mind i am probably one of the most insane members here. i got the lamp fixtures out of an old suzuki 1100 crotch rocket and then researched the proper bulb on e-bay and matched that with an HID compatable..if you know a bike scrap yard you may get lucky. otherwise your lookin at a 50-60 dollar kit as apposed to the $20 kit i purchased for my lenses...they are glass by the way and look bitchin. as far as the rest of the bulbs you have to research all by name...1157, T 5, T 10 etc.. and pick the ones with the best lumination qualities. for example the 1157 red have many different styles. the ones that have around 20 leds on them are pointed in all directions and light the whole tail lense. the cheep-os are all facing in one direction making a red dot on the lense and suck. it tkes a while to find them and a few key word tricks to find in bulk. for instance i replaced my halogen driving light bulbs with hyper blue lED. not very bright but look sick.
  16. I have used the thick black gasket material from autozone and copper spray and it holds up just fine. just have to be careful cutting as the material is a bit brittle. just make sure the surfaces are cleaned thoroughly even though its a pain. i use a piece of Plexiglas with a sanding disk stuck on it to get smooth surfaces quickly.
  17. I have not seen ea82 valve seals but as long as they pop on the valve guides and seal around the valve stems and do not get smashed by the springs on full compression they should work fine. otherwise they are very cheap on ebay.
  18. I put a new set of tires at big-o and sweet talked them into throwing in an alignment just as a hail Mary to fix the issue and all is well...I love this wagon..unfortunately my daughter has finally taken over driving rights by placing hello kitty stickers all over the poor helpless wagon.....genius act of possession control on her part because i would commandeer it allot just because i could.
  19. I went HID main headlights and all LED running and park lamps on the brat and now it keeps a great charge. The only incandescent i have now are the auxiliary high beams and the roll bar lamps. even the dash lights are led. before i would turn on the high beams and blow fuses all the time. this was my solution as apposed to tracing wires. LEDs pull very little amps and HIDs are run on a relay system with power converters. all the leds are found on craigslist and are relatively cheap. Car looks sick at night also.
  20. ea71s are notoriouse for ring ridges cracking due to larger compression rings. My first subie tear down exposed a cracked compression ring and piston ridge. i was driving her like that for who knows how long and she did pop like hell on deceleration. I made a traffic cop reach for his peace once because i slowed down when i passed by and.. Poppedy-pop!!
  21. Thats a beauty and i want one someday. never seen those wheels yet..cool!
