  1. Much easier to size you up that way nipper
  2. I'm curious. Anyone else have an over heating issue on these puppies http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=9753&goto=newpost There seems to be a pattern developing, and my gut tells me its a radiator issue. nipper
  3. a cheap mechanical gauge with good pressure is the way to go on this. Facotry gauges or "ok" to let you know something is not right, but not for diagnoses. See if you can get the 30.00 name brand gauge instead of the 15.00 whothehellisthis brand. nipper
  4. Do a compression test on all 4 cylinders wet and dry. This will tell us a lot. Do you have spark? Can you hear the fuel injectors clicking? nipper
  5. It's rare that i say this But i would look for a 1998 or a 2001. That tranny issue is one reason. 99 has the bad spedo head, but that is easily correctable. Be triple sure about the tranny. Do the driving in circle thing. Make sure there is no delay going into gear both hot and cold, even if that means the car has to idle for 20 minutes to wrm up the tranny. The tranny takes 3x's longer to heat up then the engine. nipper
  6. The fix is to replace the spedo head. You dont need the entire cluster, as they are easy to replace. nipper
  7. hrmmmmmm what kind of highway ride do they give? try tire rack or your redneck 4wd shop bob. He may know better then any of us. nipper
  8. Old puegots are really cool. a neighbor had one that was a wagon. i wouldntr mind having one, though the 4speed on the tree was a bit confusing. They have classic 1950's lines without being boats. nipper
  9. Not sure what it is, may be an old pugeot or something. It is a rear engined car, lloks 1950's. Subarus first car was the 360 in 1958 http://www.drive.subaru.com/Spr03_EarlyHistory.htm
  10. Yes you do. The ATF fluid has to be warm. nipper
  11. Its basics physics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_resistance The faster you go the more HP you need to fight wind resistance. "Note that the power needed to push an object through a fluid increases as the cube of the velocity. A car cruising on a highway at 50 mph (80 km/h) may require only 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) to overcome air drag, but that same car at 100 mph (160 km/h) requires 80 hp (60 kW). With a doubling of speed the drag (force) quadruples per the formula. Exerting four times the force over a fixed distance produces four times as much work. At twice the speed the work (resulting in displacement over a fixed distance) is done twice as fast. Since power is the rate of doing work, four times the work done in half the time requires eight times the power."
  12. That would be news to me, since the HH is a pass thorugh device. I see on 1st subaru that there are differnt MC for manual vs automatic, but i dont recall if all soobies that year came with a HH. nipper
  13. HH gets pluumbed into the left front brake line. You dont need to replace the MC. It has a cable that goes to the clutch fork. It mounts on the left front frame rail under the hood. Hopefully everything is there that you need. nipper
  14. Well its either that or an engine. Unless YOU have any suggestions? nipper
  15. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR! that oil pressure is extreemly low. At 2000 rpm you should be at least in the 30's. First question, what are you measuring this with (brand name of gauge please) and what is the range of the gauge. Second thing i would do is replace the oil pump. Hopefully thats the reason for the issues. At that low a mileage i cant beleive you have a bearing issue. Also do an oil change and change the filter. I dont have the specs in front of me, but you need to be much higher then that. My 83 would peg the oil pressure gauge untill the oil warmed up on a cold start. nipper
  16. Throw a timing light on it and see if the timing is changing. i dont remeber if this has a vac advanced on it. If it does disconnect it. This will tel you with the timing light if the carb is doing something weird. or the dist is. nipper
  17. Round whith a hole in the center usually works :-p nipper
  18. 34 seems low (define cold). At idle a warm enigne will have a low oil pressure reading. What is the reading at 2000 rpm? nipper
  19. Idle switch i think has to do more with the IAC motor. The TPS would defanitly throw off the transmission. It is uses as a subsitute for throttle pressure that the auto tranny needs to see in order to time shifts. nipper
