Amp meter - Ammeter general topic.
nipper replied to uniberp's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXPS A good battery can recover from being run down over night or a few hours, depending on how far down it was drained. Thats why you would show 14 voolts till you ran it down again. Just get a aftermarket battery gauge if you dont trust yours. Amp meters just tell you the flow of electricity, not the state of the voltage output. Ideally you should have both, but its not needed. nipper

Amp meter - Ammeter general topic.
nipper replied to uniberp's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCars will run with a dead altenator. They run off the battery untill there is no more power. Don't run a car without an altenator hooked up for any length of time. The batery light in GM's tend to be useless. In subarus you may not always get the battery light (or be able to see it when it first starts) but you will see the brake light. MOst cars will have the brake light and battery lights come on as they are grounded through the altenator. If the altenator is undercharging, it will be dim, if it lost a diode (or thre) it will be brighter. There are lots of threads here on "why is my brake light on (and or abs and or battery) " . My honda and datsun were the same way. and tsktsktsk not watching your battery gauge. nipper

Puzzling CEL
nipper replied to legacyak's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOne of thr front o2 sensors? If you have more then one you prbbly replaced the wrong one. If you stil have the old one swap them. Also did you use an OE sensor for the front? The rear can be any generic sensor. nipper

Puzzling CEL
nipper replied to legacyak's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXhehe that would have been my 2nd choice. Just replace it, as where they are they dont come loose. You can if you want just disconnect it and then plug it back in to make sure that the connection isnt dirty, but usually it is waht it is on that code. nipper

Intermittent clunking sound from rear
Jack the car up on that wheel and physically shake the strut. It can be the strut or the tophat. I hate noises. They are so hard to diagnose over the net. nipper

Adjust shift technique for AWD?
nipper replied to eryque's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe only thing i've seen is when the car gets in a spin in the snow. There has been suggestions about putting (throwing) the car in neutral while recovering from the spin. The other thing ive seen thats been recent is in very low speed conditions on ice/snow while braking to put the car in neutral. This way the abs is not mistaking wheel slip for engine input. Otherwise you just drive like normal. nipper

2.5 engine knock/rattle
nipper replied to mrfeh's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXcorrect. The car will run another 100,000 miles sounding like that. Some cars have it far worse, where it actually effects engine life. Its a function of a short piston skirt (reduced engine mass, etc etc). you can experiment with differnt oils to see what quiets it down. nipper

need tranny
The new computer controlled trannies do away with a lot of the parts that would cause a tranny to fail. The govenor (replaced with the VSS), modulator (ECU input) and most the valve body (solenoids) are gone. Clutch bands are disapearing (replaced with clutch packs). The basics of automatic trannies have been around since the begining. The model A ford had a planetary gear set. Those three pedals on the floor were for the brakes, low and high gear (press it in you were in low), and reverse. Throttle and ignition advance were on the steering wheel hub. http://www.barefootsworld.net/ford-t-4-beginners.html nipper

Intermittent clunking sound from rear
no bumping, i just got notice the thread updated :-p I cant tell from re reading the posts, is this 4wd (press a button) or awd. Auto or manual? Is the clunk hollow or solid sounding. Do you have a LSD? Yes you checked the uni's properly. You look for movement in the x and y axis. There should be none. What kind of brakes are on the back of the car and how old. If you lightly apply the parking brake, does the noise go away? nipper
