Passenger cylinders run hotter. Normal?
nipper replied to 85glsw's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well if you think the factory gauge is NG, then replace it with a good aftermarket gauge. If you think you have an airbubble, its really simple to get rid of. Never fill a radiator cold and think its filled. With the cap off, let the car run and warm up till the thermostat opens, then top off the cooling system. Drive it arouns the block (with the cap on), let it cool off and check the level again, and youll be done. Have you replaced the radiator cap? Just out of curiosity what condition is the radiator in externally? nipper -

ouch, your a brave person. Thats not an accurate way of telling. Does the car run hot? Does the car ping? When was the last time the timing belt was done ( I think this has a belt, its been a while) Last time the car had a tune-up? nipper -
I had mine replaced last year. I had a very mild vibration in blue, but i thought that was because fo the TB, and a occasional clunk (again TB was blamed). When the dealer rebuilt my AWD, he replaced the tranny mount since he was there, as it was shot, and the tech noticed a vibration in the driveline. The clunk and vibration were gone. Food for thought. You can also test the tranny mount with an equalizier (what is generically known as a BMF pipe or screwdriver) and see if you can pry up on the tranny. nipper

Ok i dont think anyone has asked you to do this Find a straight stretch of road (downhill) if possible. Get the car up to vibration speed. Get 5mph over that speed. Put the car in neutral and shut it off. Does the vibration go away? If not: Tires (out of round, flat spots, broken belts, shifted belts) Wheels (bent or balance) Brake Rotors (out of round, hard spots) Wheel Bearing (s) .. which can be sneaky. If it does go away, motor mounts. nipper

Real simple TQ test (which i am shocked the mechanic did not do). Set the parking brake STAND on the brake pedal Put the car in D Floor the gas (NO LONGER THEN 2-3 seconds). Read the peak number on the tach and tell us what it is. This is the stall speed test. Here is TC 101 http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/AT02.pdf (they all work the same way). it is so RARE for a TC to go bad in soobie, i would look at the cat before the TC. Disconnect the Y pipe at the engine and go for a short drive, wee if there is a difference in performance. nipper

Cars do have souls once they get past 100,000 miles (or 5 years). They grow them by osmosis from thier owners. Trucks seem to have them off the lot. nipper

Slow down... First off, when was the last time the coolant system was serviced? It's often overlooked. You need to start off with the cheapest thing first, a new radiator cap. Next the thermostat and fresh fluid. Lets cross our fingers that you didnt blow a HG due to a coolant issue. Sometimes the egg comes first, sometimes the chicken. Either way both need to be addressed even if the HG failed. nipper

The big question here is the cancer. Can you fix the cancer. Can the other person fix the cancer (or at least stop it). WIthout addressing this issue, all the other points are moot. What kind of timeline do you have for making over Bucky (realisitcally). nipper

First thing is first, replace the radiator. SInce you know its dead, do that and i bet the problem will go away. nipper

For the cost of a cap (Shame on you for not replacing it with the Radiator ) i would try that first. nipper

Check your altenator output. It can sometimes give you a false high temp gauge reading if the output is too low. nipper
