  1. Get the haynes manual. Make sure you replace the pilot bushing, throw out bearing, and the little clips that hold the throw out bearing on the clutch fork. nipper
  2. try this for a Vehical Identification Number Decoder (sorry it doesnt come with a ring) http://www.cars101.com/subaru/vin.html just for fun http://www.answers.com/topic/subaru-vin-codes hope that helps nipper
  3. no one likes a show off (still waiting for real snow) nipper
  4. well er um, its summer thats a huge heat exchange rin the front of the car. nipper
  5. If he lived in minnisota or alaska i would agree thats all hes going to get. But i think it s t stata issue of some kind. Not too many things cause over cooling. nipper
  6. Check the thermostat (start car with the radiator cap off, watch the coolant, there should be a burp when the T-stat opens). I know you said you have a new one, but the temp gauge is a dead give away. Also make sure your cooling fans arent on. I bet your gas mileage is down too. nipper
  7. I would go with OE. There is another brand that is recomended, but i forget who they are (someone will chime in). If you go aftermarket google the name. Since your mechanic hasnt done one before, make sure he replaces the throw out bearing clips. That seems to be a trouble spot when people reuse the clips, they have problems not long after. nipper
  8. Actually i was referring to a stuck thermostat. If the car doesnt reach at least (i think) 170 degrees, it stays in open loop. this means the car is running off a program and not the actual value of the sensors. This can lead to dramatically lower gas mileage. A bad temp sesnor would throw a code, or make the car stall. A bad T-stat wont. nipper
  9. I would question the o2 sensor. In modern cars, plugs and wires last about 100k (subaru is way to aggresive at 36k for a tune up). At 100K or there abouts I usually do plugs wires and the o2 sensor (front) if i am having any performance or gas mileage issues. The o2 sensor is the nose of the FI system. If that is lazy, it wont throw a code, but will dump the mileage. One more question, does your car war up properly? nipper
  10. I just got about 1-2 inches of snow with 1/4 inch of ice. damnit i want snow. i did find out the AWD works. Got Blu on ice and floored it The nose went one way, and the tail went the other. Car almost turned on its axis nipper
  11. Damn its only 25,000 miles around? To think last summer i drove 10,000 miles in 6 weeks. nipper
  12. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=70832&highlight=starter+contacts This was covered recently. nipper
  13. Well the battery is about due to be replaced. They usually had 60 month batteries. Get it tested and if it is all ok when can start discussing starter solenoid or clutch switch. nipper
  14. They are so wrong. Bad seals dont kill an engine. She needs to get on this board so we can ask her questions about the car and help her out. nipper
  15. Thats what i was wondering, he should get it load tested for free at a parts store. Cleaning battery cables are even cheaper to start with nipper
  16. stop leak for oil leaks works by swelling cork or rubber to stop leaks. It doesnt work on rotational seals or head gaskets. You can try thicker oil, or an STP additive, but i think your SOL. nipper
  17. the 2003 has less of a chance of having a weak HG. If you go with the older one, bank away some money just-in-case. Figure in 1500 for a HG, then see what the cost is between the two cars. I suspect the older one will be cheaper even with the 1500 figured in. nipper
  18. This is a manual. Can be a bad clutch switch, bad neutral saftey switch, or bad starter solenoid contacts, or dirty battery cables. Try cleaning the cables first (how old is the battery). I dont recall if the manual has a NSS or not. If you park the car in gear, try one night leaving it in neutral and see if it starts. nipper
  19. grrrr time to snarl about people listing thier cars mileage again. Winter with a combination of a tired/bad o2 snesor is my bet. Espeically since your not complaing about anything else. Have you checked your tire pressures? nipper
  20. You have a typical subaru oil leak, albeit a little early. On the bright side, you may do a timing belt a little early, but Do the cam main, oil pump seals, timing belt, water pump and tensioner all at once and youll be good for at least another 90K if not 106K. Oil is leaking on the exhaust gasket, and its usually a cam seal. you may have a valve cover leaking, but sometimes tightening them up solves that problem. nipper
  21. The cables can be stretched out. Either way your going to have to pull the rear discs and make sure everything works. Something can be frozen. nipper
