Any car with an aluminum engine can blow a HG at any time. Any engine that blows one over 140K is more age related. Use the search, there are some rather extensive threads on this, and one where i explained what the cause is. The only car from the 90's that you can say with any confidence that blows them all the time is a dodge neon (and chrysler wont even give you the time of day). Not all subarus blow HG's. There is no fixed mileage point for it either. Want to get away from blown HG, by a car with a cast iron block and head. nipper

The 2003's are suspicous. There have been some leaking Hg on a few of those. A minor tehnicality.. blown HG is internal, leaking HG is external. Once again its about 15% of US cars. nipper

i was assuming it was the 1981 too. Vacume line would show an even arc of timing change, not a jumping around. Unless he was seeing an even arc and thought it was jumping. nipper

my 1987 GL Hatch D/R 5 speed got a little notchy on the 1-2 shift (it was fine if you didnt shift fast). The D/R worked fine. The car was retired at 180,000 miles due to frame rot. nipper

Get yourself the haynes manual, it covers tranny R and R. I would imagine it takes the better part of a day. Since its a pump failure, check the fluid (when you drain it) for metal. This will help you determine what to do about the Torque Converter. If there is a lot of metal in it you may need to do a flush after the install of the tranny. I am sure someone else will chime in at this point. I havent R and R a transmission in ages. nipper

Well thats what ABS does. It doesnt shorten the stopping distance, and never was meant to (compared to dry). It allows you to maintain control of the car. It also allows for shorter breaking then when the wheels are locked up. The only time that ABS is a negative is unplowed snow or loose dirt/sand. There is a simple way to wire an on off switch, but it sounds to me that it was doing exactly what it was meant to do. ABS doesnt kick in unless the wheels lock up, and from the description you gave, it sounds like they did. Remeber to leave plenty of room between you and the other car, be careful out there folks. nipper
