4EAT control unit compatibility
nipper replied to Snowman's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXno. Newer TCU's communicate with the ECU to make for softer shifting (playing with the timing etc). The 92 doesnt do that, or at least not the same way. It may also talk to the ABS (not sure). if you look at a pre 95 diagram to a post 95 diagram, in the post the TCU talks to to the MPFI controller. It may not function properly. Also i dont even think you can get it to plug in. I dont think youll hurt anything besides the tcu by trying. Also your tranny may not be beefy enough for the extra torque load. nipper

What to look for in a '96 Outback
nipper replied to Dante's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi had a 1998 Legacy, and was really disapointed with the ground clearance. I was constantly hitting the parking stops and curbs in parking lots. My 1997 OBW does not do that. nipper

Recommended time to replace spark plug wires
nipper replied to Petersubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI usually wait for a reason. Wires made today can go 50 -100K miles without any problem. The first sign that its time is some ignition noise in the radio, or a slightly rough idle in the morning. If I'm replacing plugs, I replace wires. I dont go by soobies intervals for plugs as they seem to be too short. nipper

Soft 1/2 auto shift when cold.
nipper replied to uniberp's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe transmissions shift differntly when they are cold (all cars do this for emissions). It helps the enigne warm up faster. Im just concerned about the flare up in engine RPM. When was the last time the fluids were changed. nipper

trying to explain the change in my car
nipper replied to gritle's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXreplace the clutch. This is wear item on any car. Any car with a stick will need this changed eventually. Selling the car because of a worn clutch is as silly as selling it cause it needs tires. nipper

Feels like I'm in a boat
nipper replied to DiscoStu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe mileage wouldnt be unusual for bushings to go bad. Get under the car and physically inspect the bushings. It will be fairly obvious (if you can see them) if they are dried out and cracked. a local shop is just as good as anyone for this. If its bushings, then you will be wise to get an alignment too. I would avoid midas (hate muffler shops) but have some respect for goodyear and firestone stores when it comes to suspension work. nipper

What to look for in a '96 Outback
nipper replied to Dante's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwell look in and see if it has an interior If your going with the 2.2L the only thing to look out for is torque bind. Make sure all the tires match, and drive the car in a tight circle slowly. It should move smoothly and not jerk or grab. Check the color of the tranny fluid. Thats about it (and this goes for all subarus with AWD). nipper

trying to explain the change in my car
nipper replied to gritle's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFolks, remember gritle has very little knowledge about cars, so please explain what you are saying. Gritle at the milegae on your car, a worn clutch is not unreasonable. http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/techcenter/articles/43837/article.html will explain clutch free play. The cap should just unscrew. The car does not have to be warm. nipper
