help. PHANTOM LEAK
nipper replied to blatant's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI pray a 2006 doesnt have a HG issue. HG issues when they first start come and go and are very hard to find. Keep your paperwork and document everything. When you say fluid was all over the place, can you be more specific? nipper

life of replaced head gasket
nipper replied to mspeters's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXhrmmm normally i would side with the last forever (in car terms) answer, but you are really up there in mileage. It really depends upon what work had been done the forst time around. Also another question is either time had the engine been really cooked? When you get up high in mileage, there are other factors that can come in the picture. So... Exaclty what work was done the first time, and who did the work, and what parts were used. nipper

clutch slip that disappears
nipper replied to powderhound's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSome slip in heavy stop and go traffic is acceptable, its just an over heated clutch. Slip that comes and goes is the cars way of telling you its coming time for a new clutch. nipper

SVX Don't Stop
nipper replied to ecky's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFirst test the booster. With the car off pump the pedal ten times. Then put your foot on the brake and start the car. The pedal should move to the floor. If it does then its the master cylinder. nipper

FT4WD vs AWD?
The viscous coupling is differnt. Its AWD but its not. As long as all 4 wheels are moving at the same speed, the power goes to the front in a subaru. The moment the axles turn at differnt speeds power starts getting distrubuted to the rear. I posted an explination here on how the subaru manual tranny AWD works (that one has the viscous coupling). i think it was in the off topic ill try to find it. nipper

FT4WD vs AWD?
Ideally, the perfectlly balanced car treats all four wheels equally. It also has a 50/50 weight balance, and the center of gravity is low and as close to the center of the car as possible. AWD allows for all 4 wheels to be treated equally. If you really want to know the differnce, find a buddy with a late 90's AQD subaru. Take it out for a drive, then place the FWD in the holder under the hood and dirve it again (including hard acceleration from a dead stop in both a straight line and while turning). You will then see the differnce. nipper

nipper replied to Andyjo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell lets do the obvious, check the lubricant. Clicking? check the driveshafts and the axles. Did you break your new car already? nipper

Apparently my ECM died...
nipper replied to BSOD2600's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt is rare but it happens. If the O2 failure is inside the TCU it wont throw a code. nipper

Its time for a new SooB
nipper replied to nomoaudi's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe only issue ive seen was the timing chain tensioner, and that one went away. Some of them are starting to hit 100K and no complaints. nipper

99 outback miss at 1000 - 1500 rpm
nipper replied to steamin53's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCan be as simple as a dirty throttle plate. Spark plug and wires are 3/36 but realistically as long as the car is running fine you go 100K with them Since this car is running rough i would suggest a tuneup (which is the norm when you buy a used car anyway). nipper

trying to explain the change in my car
nipper replied to gritle's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSadly the point is moot. he is already slipping in high gears and has failed the clutch test. Clutch adjustment would help with grinding while shifting. nipper
