SR best way to drive it?
ballitch replied to erik litchy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
are you using the clutch? if so then it sounds like you should drop a quart of ATF in there for a hundred miles or so and then refill with some part or fully synthetic gear oil.....75w-90 works good, maybe throw in a quart of SAE 30 wt. in place of one quart of gear oil, that will help your cold shifts. besides that, shift at about 3-4k in a 4 cyl. unless you really feel like givin' her hell. ~Josh~ -

anyone run without Tbelt covers? ea82T
ballitch replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have some for an EA82, but some of the captive nuts are twisters, about half, if you want covers, there free, you pay shipping. sound good? i also need to get rid of my old EA82 block and heads(heads have tiny cracks in between valves) and pistons and everything else that comes in an EA82 motor, no need for it now, totally disassembled, might be missing a few bolts and nuts, you know how that goes. if you want them shoot me a PM and ill get a shipping quote for ya. ~Josh~ -

i wish i lived closer to you man, i would wrench with ya and start tearing into that wiring harness, which btw, i would do first, i know, i know.........but if youre like me and can figure out mechanical crap out okay, then you should do the wiring first, if i could go back i would. I had everything done besides harness, and it made me kinda angry that the one thing i had no idea how to finish, was the only thing keeping my car from running. but when you hear that baby fire up for the first time, it is so awesome, and the torque, dont get me started on the torque. BTW, what pres. plate are you using, will an XT6 pres. plate bolt up to an EA82 flywheel? if it does, i found a website with an XT6 pres. plate for $100 w/o shipping, or i could just get myself one of the pres. plates your using. need to solve that clutch problem fairly soon. -

the thing about synthetic is it will thicken up at higher temps like its supposed to, at lower operating temps like in city putt putt driving its not as demanding as say off-roading or mudding or high speed car-chase-like highway speeds were the gears are going a million miles an hour, rislone is another good idea i didnt think of that, might not "clean" out the tranny, might damage something also......hmmmm..........ya the 75w-140 is just the same minimum weight oil with extra headroom.....at least thats how i see it... ~josh~ -
Replacing EA82T alternator: stock unit or ??

if im not mistaken look in the USRM for the GM 100A conversion, should work on your car, might be some stipulations though, give it a look anywho. ~Josh~ -
he probably thinks the wagon is called a hatchback, since both have "hatched backs" so to speak. just ask for pics and if not, there are many other fish in the sea. ~Josh~

ya my conversion was just the warm-up for his lol. learned alot, gonna trans. EJ20T into 95 BD FWD legacy..........lots of potential........lots of wheelspin. ~Josh~

you can also get the combo for the ignition from the inside of the ignition thingy in your steering wheel area, take off plastic panels and remove ignition and take it apart, should be a number on there somewhere, take it to locksmith and tell him/her make/model/combo number, worked for a guy i knows' minivan, might be same for subies, might not. ~Josh~

im thinking of putting in a quart of ATF for about a 100 miles or so, then refilling with a fully synthetic 75w-140 form walmart, think its supertech or something, like $8 a quart. thats what ima do soon, 3rd gear gets kinda picky sometimes, anyone else have another good suggestion? ~Josh~ -

Do you sell an Engine with the Clutch ?
ballitch replied to Bro's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i bought my motor with nothing on the back of it, not like i needed the EJ clutch and pres. plate.........or did I? but as far as im concerned, you paid for the motor, not the clutch and pressure plate, the price should be prorated accordingly. ~Josh~ -

stock 4wd is fine, its just the pressure plate cant handle the power, should have gotten an XT6 pres. plate, might have to talk to John about that, the 4wd clutches are used in rx's so i was like ok it'll work for an EJ22..........i also thought that clutch slippage with anyhitng more than half throttle wouldnt be that bad, but it is very bad, cant even see how fast the car will go because of the pressure plate, if a legacy one will bolt up, i wonder the difference in thickness between EA pres. plate, and EJ pres. plate. hope it is near the same, what are my other option, would like to know, the fact that i cant really get on the throttle is really starting to drive me crazy, how am i going to smoke honduhs with a mom wagon in front of all their friends if i cant get the ponies ot the pavement? so anyone with some info about a different clutch/pres. plate setup please chime in and give me your two cents. thanks for all your guys' help. ~Josh~ -
moderators, please close the" EJ22 motor wont start" thread please, it is no longer needed for i got motor to run, and after all that effort and input from others, it was my dumb*** that was not thinking right. it was just a loose connection between the harness power wires and the connector, ya the crimp-on type, that was the culprit. ..........i know..........i know...........no need to say it.......i will get picks soon. ~Josh~

i can tell you right now, they are full of S**T, no way, the bellhousings are the same for all EJ series motors, from 1990-2005, they all mate up, if you use generations as a gauge, it will be almost foolproof. just follow my very brief outline as posted before, if you hav e any other questions, you have about 7k people here that can give you help, might want to have a backup car just in case. ~Josh~

the snorkel is in the passenger fender area, goes in to fender form engine bay and back into engine bay, piece of crap, disconnect it and try to take it out, or leave it in there, get a cone filter and make or buy yourself a maf adapter and voila, instant high end airflow. dotn screw with the timing, it is timed for a reason, its not carbed. ~Josh~
-
go to kennedyengineering.com they will hook you up, got some info from them for my EJ22 conv. its 20 bucks for the packet, very worht it id say. ~Josh~

ya but the only other thing is the fact that the alternator is turning regardless of any load put upon it, it makes power with or without the fan on. no extra power is required form the enigne to spin alt. faster or slower, only the voltage regulator sees the punishment. i say screw mechanical clutch-type fans, rob power and they just plain suck in my opinion, wire the fan into your ingition system to the ON position, you shouldnt have any probs with that. ~Josh~

the 2000 motor, is that the EJ25? i think in 2001 they stopped putting EJ22's in subies, it should bolt up no prob, the question is the engine wiring harnesses, the 1996-1999 is one era were it is mostly compatible, 2000-2004 is another era of cars, wiring might be different, if it is, no fear, just swap the 1997 engine harness off the toast motor onto the 2000 motor, might have to change throttle bodies or throttle pos. sensor or whathaveyou, but in theory it should be swappable. but dont leave any holes in anything i.e. intake manifold and such. you will have the take the intake manifolds off both motors to swpa the engine harnesses, not a big deal really, just make sure nothing gets in the heads while the intake is off, intake gaskets should be ok, if you want to grab yourself some new ones, dont go to dealer, go to schucks or knetchs or someplace, should be fine. hope this helps man. ~Josh~
